By Cheryl North The Oakland East Bay Symphony opened its 16th season with an authentically celebratory concert at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland last Friday. Perhaps the primary reason for such a jubilant mood was that the evening also represented OEBS's 15th anniversary with the magnificent Michael Morgan as its conductor/music director. The East Bay has a real treasure in Morgan and the community seems to know it. The crowd that filled the large hall was as diversified as the area's general population both with regard to ethnicity and age. All seemed intent on lauding the good maestro, and with good reason. Because of Morgan and members of the orchestra, classical music is alive and flourishing in Oakland. Morgan and small ensembles of OEBS musicians maintain an impressive schedule of visits, demonstrations, and chamber concerts to dozens of area elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the year. The results are beginning to show. Oakland's Youth Orchestra continues to grow, tour, and win prizes. And, with Morgan's encouragement and blessing, so do a number of youth jazz and choral groups in the area. In fact, the Oaktown Jazz Workshops ensemble, a group of Oakland students ranging from 13 to 17 under the tutelage of trumpeter and educator Kalil Shaheed, were tapped to provide the post-concert entertainment and garnered raves all around.

Chamber music in particular seems to spring from behind the most unlikely bush. The Music Mountain summer festival has called Falls Village its home since 1930, although it sits reasonably isolated at the top of a sparsely settled hill. The Norfolk Music Festival has older origins, having occupied grounds on the Ellen Battell Stoeckel estate in nearby Norfolk since the turn of the 20th century. Friday night, Yale faculty members, students and visiting musicians (Norfolk is the university's summer music school) anchored out-of-the way repertory by Mahler, Martinu and Ezra Laderman and the more familiar F minor Viola and Piano Sonata of Brahms. In Falls Village on Sunday, the young members of the Arianna String Quartet played Mozart's late D major Quartet and the Shostakovich 10th, and then joined the pianist Tian Ying in Brahms's grandly rhetorical A major Quartet. Put the two events side by side, and one has reflectiveness of age versus eagerness of youth. The Norfolk evening was like an impromptu recreation among old colleagues. Some of the playing was too relaxed for comfort, in particular the Brahms duo, with Kazuhide Isomura and Claude Frank. Mr. Frank, a pianist nearing 80, can teach us all about simplicity of phrase and chamber-music togetherness; his tenuous grip on tough technical problems was actually endearing in the Brahms, less so in Martinu's jazz-driven sextet "La Revue de Cuisine."

THE MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS OF A MUSIC SEASON The music season in South Florida was one of momentous upheaval. The demise of several organizations (The Florida Philharmonic and the Miami Chamber Symphony) and the withdrawal from the area of others (Close Encounters With Music) resulted in a diminished number of performances and less opportunities for local musicians. On the other hand several groups expanded their artistic horizons (the New World Symphony and the Miami International Piano Festival) with new series and venues. There was much splendid music making and a few totally forgettable evenings. Here is a review of the individuals and performances that commanded attention - for both positive and negative reasons. MOST MEMORABLE ORCHESTRAL PERFORMANCE - The New World Symphony under England's Mark Wigglesworth in an unforgettable Shostakovich Eighth Symphony - a performance that captured all of the terror, agony, and poignancy of this wartime score. Honorable Mention: Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony by the Cincinnati Symphony under the brilliant Paavo Jarvi - a lush, high voltage rendition of a 20th century classic.

2 Lawrence Budmen ENCHANTING MUSIC The song cycle Ariel 5 Poems of Sylvia Plath Alleluia (1946). This is one of the composer's earliest existing works. He repeats the word 'Alleluia!' forty seven times. The music is both jazzy and prayerful. Ms Young sang this Rorem signature piece in a clear toned, ringing soprano voice with splendid piano obbligato by Mr Young. Photo: Lynn Parks Songs from An Unknown Past (1951) was a real surprise. Here Rorem set seven poems in English madrigal style. The choral part writing is masterful. There is an elegance and lilt in this music that is irresistible. Witty, dance-like melodies abound in this engaging score. The University of Miami Chamber Singers sang this music superbly. The pure, high tones of the sopranos were ravishing. The ensemble's rhythmic precision was marvelous. Presiding over this splendid choral group was Jo-Michael Scheibe, UM's master choral conductor. One can always count on Scheibe to unearth interesting and unique choral works. This Rorem score is a real gem. Scheibe commanded bright toned singing from his excellent chamber vocal group. MUSICAL ALTERNATIVE: Can't tell a Cowboy from a Steeler? A fourth down from do-it-again? A beer bikini team from a cheesy cheerleader? Me either. But there's an alternative to the Super Bowl on Sunday. The Arizona Friends of Chamber Music is sponsoring a concert that does more than give the football-impaired an excuse to get out of the house. It's also been crafted to help those ignorant of classical music get a small taste of its quiet pleasures. "Piano and Friends," in its inaugural series this year, features young, relatively unknown musicians who play the kind of music that gets neglected in a scene that favors the big symphony. Sunday's concert, at the Leo Rich Theater, will have Bernadene Blaha, a young Canadian pianist, and Peter Rejto, a cellist formerly at the UA and now at Oberlin, playing a variety of duets and solos by Bach, Shostakovitch, Chopin and Brahms. "This is a type of concert that's tremendously neglected all over the country," says Jean-Paul Bierny, a Tucson physician who is president of Arizona Friends of Chamber Music. "We're trying to change that." For years the Friends have hosted evening chamber music performances by some of the most famous groups in classical music. For the new, lower-key series, their strategy is to ferret out talented young musicians who have not yet broken into the big-time scene, or whose playing, perhaps, is not of the flashy style favored in the prestigious competitions. They contacted well-known piano teachers around the country for recommendations. So far, the strategy has paid off, Bierny says.

WCO: Hindemith, Beethoven, Finzi, Mozart Program Hindemith: Five Pieces for Strings, Op. 44, No. 4 Beethoven: Symphony No. 1 in C Major Finzi: Eclogue for Piano and Strings Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor, K. 466 Performers Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra Tian Ying, piano Andrew Sewell, conductor The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra's Wednesday evening concert at the Union Theater, Andrew Sewell conducting, was splendidly in tune, as well as musically vigorous and absorbing. Hindemith's carefully crafted Five Pieces for Strings, Op. 44, No. 4 opened the program. Suzanne Beia gave an excellent account of the fleet violin solo in the last movement, and throughout Sewell brought out the work's deep lyricism. Brief moments of unsteady ensemble in the quick movements did no real damage. Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C Major , which Sewell conducted from memory, was notably clean and precise, with good tempi and a solid sound. Beethoven's wind writing often affords a slightly raucous edge over the strings, used in this piece to good effect. The work is deceptively difficult, but it got a first-rate exposure here. After intermission the very gifted pianist Tian Ying gave a clearly heartfelt reading of Gerald Finzi's Eclogue for Piano and Strings , the slow movement of an unfinished piano concerto. The music, typically for Finzi, is introspective, and Ying made the most of its basically simple song form.

WCO: Ravel, Bizet Program Ravel: Le Tombeau de Couperin Bizet: Symphony in C Major Ravel: Piano Concerto in G Major Performers Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra Tian Ying, piano Andrew Sewell, conductor Andrew Sewell, the third and final contender for the post of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra's music director, achieved a notable success Saturday evening at the First Congregational Church in a program devoted to Ravel and Bizet, thanks in no small part to pianist Tian Ying, who gave a simply spectacular performance of Ravel's Concerto in G Major . The orchestra players too were impressive in this piece and in Bizet's youthful Symphony in C Major Ying's fingers are as solid and secure as any I've heard. Ever. I know the piece well and did not spot even small flaws in its very demanding outer movements. But the slow movement was the major revelation: instead of the insouciant simplicity one usually hears there, Ying brought a somewhat Beethoven-like, lyrically probing intensity to his reading, running the high risk of overinterpreting the score. The gamble paid off, opening up new musical terrains by daring to be original in a familiar work. At 31, Ying can expect a great future if he maintains such a high level of musicianship. Contributing greatly to the polish of this piece, Sewell paid unusually close attention to the soloist's nuances. The Bizet's fast movements were a technical stretch for the WCO players, but that's part of the challenge of growth for any established ensemble. Here too the slow movement (
