JACK WRIGHT , a sound-explorer on saxophone from Easton PA, CAROL GENETTI , a sound vocalist (as opposed to word or text) from Chicago, and JON MUELLER , percussionist of Milwaukee, are all extraordinary improvisers and soloists in their own right. Their first meeting was Sept. 2004 in Chicago, followed by another in June 2005. These were preceded by years of collaboration between Jack and Carol, who have toured several times on the east coast. The focus of the trio is on long, twisting lines of intense and sustained textures, broken abruptly by stuttered gaps and shifts of direction. They take acoustic instruments to the very edge of electronic sounds (indeed Jon is playing only snare drum, minimally amplified). This fall they will be making a huge loop through the MidwestMilwaukee, Madison, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Nashville, Lexington, Columbus, Cincinnati, Bloomington IN, and Chicago.
The duo of Carol and Jack is featured on "The Shattering", a cd compiling Carol's appearances at the High Zero Festival 2000 in Baltimore. "It would certainly appear that Genetti is Wright's vocal collaborator of choice. Genetti's refreshing and rough-edged spontaneity definitely educes some of Wright's best playing, perhaps because Wright's aesthetic approximates a search for the ineffable qualities of the human voice in his palette of reed sounds, not to mention the ineffable vocal qualities of other animal species."

Pianist Wally Rose was one of three sons born to Janet Pecansu and Manuel Rodrigues (The family changed its name to Rose before Wally's birth). He was born at home in Oakland, California, October 2, 1913. His parents were of Portuguese descent and natives of Hawaii, so the Rose family sailed to Honolulu many times during his childhood. Rose attended the first through third grades in Honolulu before settling with his family in San Francisco. His family's home was on the southwest corner of 20th and Diamond Streets in the Eureka Valley, not far from the schools of Mission Dolores and Most Holy Redeemer Church, which he also attended. Mr. Rose always gave credit to his mother for the encouragement to learn the piano. After attending Oakland's Lockwood Junior High School, Rose attended Castlemont High School. He first studied piano with Miss Alice Eggers, a distinguished music teacher at Castlemont High School. In the 1930s piano studies were continued with Miss Elizabeth Simpson, who had studios in Berkeley and San Francisco. After graduation from Castlemont High School he played in dance bands aboard ships around the world in the early 1930s, including a sea-

Photographs by Linda Shockley M AY How often do Oberlin audiences have the chance to see professorial types blow whistles and play musical chairs on the stage of Warner Concert Hall? The correct answer is once a year, when the piano faculty, together with alumni, Conservatory piano major seniors, and special guests join forces to produce the annual Grand Piano Extravaganza, slated for Friday, May 26, 8 P.M ., in Warner Concert Hall. Tickets are $14, and are available through the College Alumni Office (775-8692). This year's eclectic show will offer piano chamber music from Rachmaninov to Joplin. M.C.-ed by David Love, associate vice president/ director of research development and sponsored programs, the Grand Piano Extravaganza combines serious music-making with off-the-wall circus acts, all in the name of fund-raising for Oberlin piano department scholarships and special projects. "I think by being a "fun-raiser" as well as a "fund-raiser," the Grand Piano Extravaganza lets the community enjoy having a part in supporting the serious mission of Oberlin Conservatory," remarks Andrew Hisey, associate professor of piano pedagogy. "It's basically a variety show," explains Spencer Myer, a senior piano major from North Ridgeville, OH.

"From Norway to Broadway" MUSIC: Prelude opening of Song of Norway [Jay CDJAY2 1253, CD1, track 1] [under the following]
The music in the background sounds very much like Edvard Grieg's only pinao concerto. But there is one major problem. There's no piano in it. That's because you are not listening to Grieg's Piano Concerto , but rather the Prelude to the Broadway and Hollywood musical, "Song of Norway." This musical is based on the life and music of Edvard Grieg and Grieg's melodies are almost always very much in evidence from the start. Hi and welcome to Compact Discoveries . I'm your guide, Fred Flaxman. And in this hour we are going to travel "From Norway to Broadway" as we compare the music of "Song of Norway" to the original scores by Edvard Grieg. MUSIC: ends For example, let's listen to the opening of Grieg's Piano Concerto , now that you've heard what Robert Wright and George Forrest did to it in their musical version. The most obvious difference, of course, is Grieg's inclusion of the piano from the very start. But there are several other changes of orchestration as well. Still, the tunes remain very much Grieg's. MUSIC: opening from Grieg: Piano Concerto performed by Eva Pblocka, piano, with the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Cracow, conducted by Tadeusz Wojciechowski [Conifer Classics 75605 51750 2, CD1, track 1]

From there he was introduced to the writer
Marcel Proust and the Count Robert de Montesquiou . The Count took a liking to the young pianist and brought him under his considerable wing of influence. Delafosse's career took off like a rocket and he was performing all over Europe and London playing at such events as a literary feast at Versailles Palace . In 1894 he set to music one of Proust's poem "Mensonges" (Lies) and Proust praised Delafosse over and over in the press. But by 1897 the friendship between Montesquiou and Delafosse came to a sudden and bitter end. As if on a whim Montesquiou cast him off and ridiculed him. The socialites who had embraced Delafosse before, now shunned him and he found himself without patrons. Even Proust, whom had praised him before, was now openly ridiculing him A great example of the "revenge" Montesuiou extracted from Delafosse is aptly highlighted in Marcel Proust, Correspondence.

If you owned a movie palace in a large city this presented only a modest complication to your enterprise. Musicians were easily available, as were instruments and scores, not to mention professional arrangers and conductors eventually even composers. But away from the large urban centers the music fared less well, most of the time handed off to a lone pianist, or during the main evening showing, perhaps with an additional string or wind player, too. The cliche of the ricky-tick piano in the background of a silent movie stems from these days, and was devised independently by many theater managers of the time.
