His first, for Easter Parade , was followed in rapid succession by Oscars for Donen's On the Town (1949) and George Sidney's Annie Get Your Gun Edens played an important part in the career of gay icon Judy Garland. The two met in 1935 when Edens was called in to replace Garland's father, Frank Gumm, an amateur pianist, at Garland's audition at MGM. Edens was quick to appreciate her talent and became not only her musical mentor but also a lifelong friend. Sponsor Message. Edens wrote a song for Garland to sing at Clark Gable's birthday party in 1937. It not only delighted Gable but also favorably impressed the producer of Del Ruth's Broadway Melody of 1938 (1937), who had Garland sing it in the film. After working with Garland on a couple of other projects Edens served as musical director for The Wizard of Oz and also as rehearsal pianist for Garland. Garland's daughter Lorna Luft credits Edens with teaching her mother to have the courage to show her vulnerability in her performances. RonaldBruceMeyer.com June 8 Frank Lloyd Wright (1867) It was on this date, June 8, 1867, that American architect Frank Lloyd Wright was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin, the son of a preacher and a teacher. He was brought up a Unitarian. He studied civil engineering ay the University of Wisconsin and got his first architectural job at a firm in Chicago. Wright started his own firm in 1893 after being fired from another Chicago firm for moonlighting. Between 1893 and 1909 Wright began to develop his "Prairie House" concept of design. He married several times and acquired hundreds of commissions over his long career: the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Fallingwater, the Price Tower skyscraper, the Guggenheim Museum, the Marin County Civic Center, and his own home in Wisconsin, Taliesen. About religion, Wright said, "I believe in God, only I spell it Nature." Indeed, he stressed, "Nature is my manifestation of God. I go to nature every day for inspiration in the day's work. I follow in building the principles which nature has used in its domain" You could call Wright's belief a sort of Pantheism, for Wright would say, "Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you." God is the great mysterious motivator of what we call nature and it has been said often by philosophers, that nature is the will of God. And, I prefer to say that nature is the only body of God that we shall ever see. If we wish to know the truth concerning anything, we'll find it in the nature of that thing.

Unlike multinational corporations that use convergence and globalization as code words for ensuring their products are forced upon the masses in the strip malls of the entire world, improv actually is a global phenomenon. Today, the growth of the Internet plus the ability to create less expensive CDs has allowed the isolated pockets of like-minded performers to get in contact with one another and their listeners. Audiences may still be tiny by pop music standards, but players and venues now have an easier time communicating with one another. Most importantly, with the creation of many improv festivals in North America and Europe, musicians can have something resembling a career, if they're willing to always be on the road and to sell their CDs from the stand. Two of the front-line soldiers who are finally reaping some rewards for their decades-long perseverance are saxophonist Jack Wright, 59, of Boulder, Colo., and Poughkeepsie, N.Y. multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee, 62, who is as well-known as one can be in this genre.

l l BIOGRAPHY PART 1 o o o biography o I o discography o o o o o o o o o I o press Alto saxophonist / flutist / clarinetist and outstanding Downbeat award winner Leo Wright is one of the lesser-known voices of jazz, although he certainly gained a high degree of recognition as a sideman, particularly with DIZZY GILLESPIE, JACK McDUFF, OLIVER NELSON, LALO SCHIFRIN, JOHNNY COLES, KENNY BURRELL and at times with the Mingus group. With only rare few albums to his name, Wright was relegated to a secondary tier within the consciousness of jazzdom, and undeservedly so, probably because he worked exten- sively in Europe. Austin had a well-developed jazz scene during that time, trumpeter BOBBY BRADFORD was there, he and Leo played together in the 18-piece college jazz band From A fireside chat with Bobby Bradford He was clearly a professional already when he got to college. When he was drafted into the Army, it seemed that good saxophonists existed there in great number, but as a flutist, he readily found a berth in an Army orchestra overseas. In December 1956 military service took him to Stuttgart and Augsburg (Germany) for 21 months. BRAHMS This article was first given as an illustrated talk in Scottish universities in 1992 where the text was printed and distributed. Next to Beethoven, Brahms is the greatest composer. In some ways Brahms is preferable since his music has a greater polish and a more fluid style than Beethoven. While the form and structure of most of Beethoven's work is admirable Brahms added a new dimension. He is classical but he is also romantic. And it must be remembered that romantic has nothing to do with sexual interest between people but the word means imaginative and much more! But Brahms has been maligned. He was plagued with the inane charge that his superlative Symphony no. 1 was really Beethoven's Tenth.

Links Da Camera of Houston Jazz Series Da Camera of Houston has presented jazz programming since the organization was founded. In early seasons, Da Camera presented concerts by the quartet Oregon and violinist Stephane Grappelli. Later, performers such as saxophonist Joe Henderson and trumpeter Jon Faddis performed in Crossover Series concerts which mixed chamber music and jazz in the same performance.
