Downtown Jazz best bets
June 24. 4pm. Free. 98.1 CHFI After Work Series, BenQ World Stage, Nathan Phillips Square, 100 Queen W. Of all the settings raging tenorman David Murray has placed himself in, the Guadeloupian rhythms and charred Afro-funk of this group mixed with his intense playing might be the most potent combination yet.
KEN ALDCROFT'S CONVERGENCE ENSEMBLE
June 24. 8pm. $15. Next Wave Series, NFB Mediatheque, 150 John. 416-973-3012. It's hard to imagine a Toronto scene without guitarist Ken Aldcroft, who seems to be everywhere at once. His four-piece Convergence Ensemble merges two of Aldcroft's other groups, and features locals well known for their willingness to explore unconventional territory.
KIRAN AHLUWALIA

GEORDIE HALEY'S EVERYTIME BAND
June 26. 8pm. $15. NFB Next Wave Series, NFB Mediatheque, 150 John. 416-973-3012.
Along with compositions from Haley's Green Suite mixing melody with free-wheeling improv, his group (including drummer Jean Martin and vocalist Christine Duncan, a.k.a. adventurous duo Barnyard Drama) features some of the best up-and-coming players around.
