  • Home Contact Advertise About Us ... Music Blue Note bliss Blue Note bliss By Fritz The Dog August 11, 2004 It's not easy being a record label that specializes in jazz. With sales totaling about 3 percent of the market, a label needs to have a sure thing: an artist or artists who can help extend the bottom line. In recent years, most of the major labels, including SONY/Columbia and the Verve Music Group, have cut back their artist rosters and scaled down their reissue programs. Yet there is one solid island in the vast, churning ocean that is the recording industry. Blue Note Records, one of the most respected names in jazz, is bucking the trend of cutbacks and superficiality. And in the process, they're releasing some of the best and most diverse music heard today. The Grammy success of Norah Jones' first recording, Come Away With Me, has given the label its highest visibility ever, while two specialized reissue programs have pleased traditionalists at the same time. "Blue Note prides itself on maintaining what we consider to be the greatest roster of jazz artists on the planet. While many labels have either folded or slashed their rosters in recent years, Blue Note instead signed two highly esteemed artists, Wynton Marsalis and Terrance Blanchard," said Cem (pronounced "Jem") Kurosman, head of Media Relations for Blue Note, in a recent e-mail. It's interesting to note that Marsalis and Blanchard both came to Blue Note from the Sony/Columbia label. They join a varied family of artists that include vocalists Cassandra Wilson and Dianne Reeves and instrumentalists Joe Lovano, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Greg Osby, as well as a younger generation in Jason Moran and Stephon Harris.

James Morrison’s recording career really got into full swing when he signed with Warner Music in 1988. Not only did James have an outlet for his recordings in Australia but also, thanks to the interest and encouragement of legendary producer and Warner senior executive Nesuhi Ertegun, Morrison records got released around the world. In 1998 James and brother John Morrison established their own independent record label Morrison Records as a vehicle for their own recordings as well as new recordings from up and coming new artists. So Far So Good is a reflective overview of James Morrison covering close to 25 years of outstanding recordings by one of Australia’s most widely known and respected musicians. This collection displays the diversity and impressionable talents of a musician who sees no boundaries in what he can play and what he intends to achieve. The release of this set coincides with James’ 40th birthday and, to quote James when looking back at what he has achieved so far “ I’m only just getting started”

Miss America Receives Release from Atlantic City Contract
Pageant Decides it’s Time to Move, Thanks AC for
85 Years of Hospitality
“The decision to leave the Pageant’s longtime home in Atlantic City was made after extremely careful deliberation and with the highest level of respect for the countless friends, volunteers and fans of the Pageant,” McMaster said. “The MAO would like to thank the ACCVA and the State of New Jersey for its continued support throughout the process leading to this difficult decision.” Jeff Vasser, ACCVA executive director, stated, “We did not undertake this decision lightly. In view of the financial considerations facing MAO now and in the future, we respect MAO’s decision to start fresh. We wish the Pageant well. Atlantic City will always remain the Pageant’s home and we relish our 85-year history together.” “We thoroughly appreciate the assistance we have received from the Atlantic City community, and the State of New Jersey over the past 85 years,” said McMaster. “The entire community has embraced Miss America, its contestants and the Pageant’s rich history.”

HK's 10 Best CD's of 2000 East Bay Express Desperately Seeking Transparency... I've been thinking a lot about sound this year, about what actually communicates the magic in music from the player to the listener, and how the clarity and resolution of different recording and distribution media affect artists' ability to get through to their audiences. Let's look at four examples. Analog recording and phonograph discs have nearly a century-long track record of effectively allowing musicians to reach listeners' hearts through the recorded medium. Digital recordings and CDs have been, in many ways, comparatively problematic, obscuring the details of the magic by removing transparency and depth from our aural perspectives. The advent of the MP3 represents an all-time low in sound quality; even worse than old 8-track cartridges in car stereos. The MP3 medium lends itself to music as commodity and not as a transformational or even spiritual channel of communication. Those essences are nearly lost in the low sampling rate of the MP3 format. Bad news for music, I think, and not a hopeful development for what I value in sharing sounds and meanings. Most of the audience doesn't know what it's missing as the music's resolution gets worse and worse for the consumer. I worry about things like this a lot. DEREK BAILEY: String Theory (Paratactile).

Bennink is especially famous for his inventive approach to his kit, which has included the use of various unconventional rhythm-making devices, including pieces of wood, sheet metal, and even pizza boxes. His musical curiosity has naturally drawn him out from behind the kit as well, and he has performed on the saxophone, piano, clarinet, trombone, and harmonica. Drums, however, have remained his passion throughout his career.

Holiday concerts

WORTHINGTON — The Hilltown Choral Society, in its 48th year, will perform three holiday concerts in the area under the lead of Jeff Hunt, new music director.
The chorus will perform at First Congregational Church in Worthington on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 7:30 p.m, at First Congregational Church in Hinsdale on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 4 p.m. and at Dalton’s Berkshire First Church of the Nazarene on Sunday, Jan. 9, at 4 p.m.
The December concerts will highlight Advent, Christmas and Hanukkah themes, and the January concert the theme of Epiphany. The concerts will include sing-a-long selections, as well as several pieces highlighting the holiday season in a range of musical styles. In addition to new choral settings incorporating traditional melodies, the chorus will welcome those who come to participate in a secular medley of old holiday favorites.
Amy Renak will accompany the singers on the piano, flute and cello, and the “Berkshire Bells” of Pittsfield, a group of ecumenical handbell-ringing aficionados directed by Hunt. Refreshments will be available following the concerts.

Reviews - VISION ONE: Vision Festival 1997 Compiled YOUR FLESH
The CD booklet provides some examples of the artwork associated with the Vision Festival and refers to the interdisciplinary work that went on there between painters, sculptors, dancers, and poets. The entire package is worth picking up. -Bruce Adams AMAZON.COM : on the list of "11 Best Jazz Records of 1998" Review of Vision Festival 1997 by Scott Hreha (originally written in July 1997 for Scott's very fine webzine ONE FINAL NOTE) The word 'vision' carries strong implications, often concerning the notion of looking forward/ahead to a point in time when states-of-being will have improved. Similarly, the recently-staged (May 27-31) Second Annual Vision for the 21st Century Festival ('Vision Fest') remained true to the concept which inspired its name. Completely disregarding my routine obligations, I managed to travel from Minneapolis to New York for three nights (Thursday-Saturday) of the six-day long festival, during which I witnessed live performances by many of the major (yet marginalized) proponents of creative jazz (not to mention the poets, dancers and visual artists also involved in this multi-disciplinary event), and gained a first-hand understanding of the higher planes (dare I say 'nirvanas'?) sought by the 'visionary' artists.

Charlie Feathers' rock and roll legacy
By TIM PERLICH *CHARLIE FEATHERS Get With It: Essential Recordings 1954-69 (Revenant/KOCH) Rating: NNNN Nowhere is the explosive collision of bluegrass and blues that gave rise to rockabilly more evident than in the primitive early recordings of Charlie Feathers. The hiccuping hillbilly soul yelps of Feathers, who learned to shout and slap a guitar from Mississippi boyhood pal Junior Kimbrough, proved to be as big an influence as his Sun buddy Elvis on the Cramps' Lux Interior. Much of what John Fahey's Revenant label has compiled on the Get With It set single tracks released on Flip, Sun, Meteor, King and Kay, along with corresponding demo sessions has already been officially reissued or bootlegged, but it's great to finally have the prime pickings of Feathers' exciting work (Peepin' Eyes, Tongue Tied Jill, One Hand Loose, Can't Hardly Stand It, Jungle Fever) available in one clean, neat two-disc package. As well as a couple of eyebrow-raising obscurities on labels like Holiday Inn, Wal-May and Perfect to thrill collectors, Get With It also comes with insightful essays by Jim Dickinson and Peter Guralnick to fill in some of the holes left by Colin Escott's track-by-track annotation. A tip-top study all around. By KIM HUGHES DEAD MAN ON CAMPUS (DreamWorks/Universal) Rating: NNN Any movie soundtrack hip enough to include a track by San Fran underground champs Creeper Lagoon even if they did just sign a deal with the distributing label and the song is available on their current disc is worth a look.
