At their annual conference and general meeting, held in the New Zealand Embassy in Washington, DC on September 11-12, ANZACC’s regional directors accepted the challenge of the Australian and New Zealand Ambassadors and the Austrade and Trade New Zealand directors in the United States to upgrade their assistance to businesses engaged in United States trade and investment with Australia and New Zealand. The two day conference was kicked off with strong endorsements for continuing liberalization of trade and investment flows by Australian Ambassador Andrew Peacock and New Zealand Ambassador James Bolger. Music Club Listings Sound Advice Music Reviews French Confections OFAM brings Gallic classics to town. By Brett Campbell What might have happened had American concert programs had a French-ier flavor? We can find out next week when the Oregon Festival of American Music brings a splendid program of French and French-inspired American music to town. It appeals to classical and jazz fans as well as music lovers who thought that all classical music was heavy, pretentious and boring. These light, but not lightweight, sleek, tuneful works do for classical music what French pastries did for dinner. In fact, French music's engaging lightness and sweetness led many culture mavens to unfairly condemn it as somehow insufficiently weighty or too simplistic. Of course, there were Germanic composers who embraced so-called French values and vice versa, but there's enough truth to Thomson's dictum to make Francophiles like me regret the puzzling paucity of French composers on American concert stages. This neglect extends to Claude Debussy, whose impressionist legacy inspired later French composers and gave them something to react against. Thomson rightly revered Debussy and Satie not only as phenomenal creative artists but also as immense influences on subsequent generations of French and American composers.

Barry O'Rourke This article appeared in Coda , Issue 303, May/June 2002 Destiny, Discipline, Delight: Ali Ryerson Some people assist their destinies the hard way: through continual tests by "fire," year upon year of trial and error until, one fine day, they land fully on their own two feet, apparently fulfilled. Others, the Happy (or perhaps even unhappy) Few are fully on their feet from the start, finding a road they walk with seeming ease. And then there's a unique third breed for whom the pathboth rocky and levelis inevitable. It arrives as naturally, as seamlessly, as breathing itself. This seems to have been the Way for flute player Ali Ryerson, a woman whoas far as the world of jazz is concernedwas "to the manor born." Destiny combined with discipline (hour upon hour of "practice," but practice that feels like the most natural part of life) =delight: the delight Ryerson's music has provided her many fans throughout a career that spans three decades. Much has been said about Ali Ryerson's father, Art, a guitarist who played with the bands of Benny Goodman and Paul Whitman, backed the Mills Brothers, and performed with everyone from Fats Waller to Charlie Parker. He also brought home such "guests" as Lou Stein, Milt Hinton, and Bucky Pizzarelli. Imagine the effect on his daughter, Ali, who started out on piano at five and took up the flute at eleven.

He came to our house after having given me several phone calls days before to give me the exact arrival date of my piano, and to keep me posted whether he was on time, and finally, to ask me for directions from O'Hare airport, when he was close to Chicago. Quite a guy. It didn't take him long to see that there was no chance for the seven foot black beast to go through the main staircase of the 1885 house. The back staircase was also not an option. He sat down in our living room and started moving energy - making phone calls, and advising us what to do. There was a moment when he even offered to take the piano back with him to St. Louis and store it there. He had traveled all the way from California, and he clearly loved his job. He also loved talking on the phone. However he had some trouble doing it from our place since, he said, he was only used to dialing while driving. I called the company with the biggest ad in the Yellow Pages (good use for their advertising dollar, after all!) and Drex and Robert went to Chicago Movers to deposit the piano for storage. Ali (the main man at Chicago Movers) came early next morning to assess the possibility of the piano coming through the window. Third floor, narrow windows, but it would work, he said. We would need permission from our landlady to take the entire window out, we would need someone to actually take out the window, and...oh, would the floors support the piano? One issue after another, and I was supposed to feel like a happy piano owner!

You don't. You fudge and pick 11 instead! From the formal to the free and with plenty of funk, here's a short list of this year's best. 1. "No Idea" Misha Mengelberg Trio No small feat, but jazz pianist Misha Mengelberg is the godfather of the entire Dutch improvisation scene. And on "No Idea," he proves why. Mixing the familiar (George Gershwin, Thelonious Monk) with great improv skills and a rock-solid rhythm section (courtesy Greg Cohen and Joey Baron), the Misha Mengelberg Trio rollick through these tunes with a deft, adventurous touch. There's nothing standard here. 2. "Khepera" Randy Weston Randy Weston never ceases to find new heights of excellence, whether exploring West African polyrhythms in jazz or excoriating silence with blasting energy. Khepera roars open with "Creation," which ushers in a lengthy, telling meditation on jazz's intercontinental reach, both in terms of source material and influence. Chief Bey's percussion and Pharoah Sanders's saxophone playing bookend the meditation. Each painting was hung on the walls and front of the stage seconds after that performance ended. Poet Sarah Jones gave a strong set saying the good thing about the "avant-garde means you can say whatever the fuck you want" to without fear, and she was fearless and not self-indulgent. Joe Maneri with Mat Maneri with Randy Peterson is a known quantity and quality; unknown to me was dancer Christine Coppola, who used a varied dance vocabulary which was at one in this quartet, she being a fourth among equals. Even her facial gestures gibed with the musical sonorities and silences, Mat Maneri producing slabs of violin sounds, Peterson full of energy. Joe Maneri smiled in the music, at once kvelling and praying with his hands held out, then he grabbed his clarinet and Coppola carved out space with her body the way musicians do with their tools. In "Prelude to a Kiss," they traced the outlines and skirted the melody. These performers made my life rich.
