..cd review:
Brahms Without Airs Reviewed by Michael Adams In an era when classical recordings are disappearing from store shelves about as fast as DVD players (but for sadly different reasons), it’s refreshing to see a disc by a violinist other than the usual suspects, like Shaham, Perlman, Mutter, Kennedy, Zukerman et.al.
Frank Almond, concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra since 1995, is joined by pianist William Wolfram in Brahms’ Three Sonatas for Violin and Piano. (Boolean Recordings; available at www.sonatabop.com ) Rare are the people who can wear two hats - of both concertmaster and soloist - with distinction. They are very different roles, requiring unique skills. However, this disc shows that the small fraternity that includes Joe Silverstein and Glenn Dicterow might well have a new member. Let me start by saying what this recording does NOT have. There is a refreshing lack of affected gesture, like glissandos, rubatos and agogic accents in the predictable places. Almond is clearly a musician of exquisite taste and technical polish. Missing are distracting instrumental mannerisms which so often get in the way of simple music making. The same can be said of Wolfram. His playing is warm and finely attuned to the unique characters of each sonata, and he handles the often athletic and unwieldy piano writing with great finesse and expressive touch.

Once an important part of the concert scene, the song recital, or Liederabend, has experienced a sad decline in the U.S., although it remains a greatly loved genre in Europe and Britain. During the 20th century Boston could boast of twenty to thirty major recitals a year, performed by world class artists. The great Irish tenor, John McCormack, gave eleven Symphony Hall song recitals in one season! In The Art of Song series, The Bostonians will explore this vast repertory, featuring beloved, familiar songs along with lesser known masterpieces. Tickets are $25; $18 for Seniors and Students. To place orders, please call 617-242-4015 or visit our website at www.thebostonians.org where you can charge your ticket order with Visa or MasterCard.

ALWYN:
Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2. Derby Day Overture. Sonata all Toccata. Peter Donohoe (piano), Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, James Judd (conductor). Naxos 8.557590. (59' 33"). Derby Day , and the spiky 1942 Piano Sonata complete the release. Peter Donohoe's stunning playing returns us to that night many years ago when he took Moscow by storm in the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, the sheer dexterity and detail of his playing being quite remarkable, while the impact of the Bournemouth Symphony is superb. The recording quality is outstanding, the disc as a whole leaving me searching for adequate superlatives to commend it to you. BAX: Tintagel. The Garden of Fand. The Happy Forest. The Tale the Pine Trees Knew. November Woods. Royal Scottish National Orchestra, David Lloyd-Jones (conductor). Naxos 8.557599. (74' 08"). No composer in the 20th century created sound pictures with such luminous colours. If you doubt that statement, go out and buy this disc where David Lloyd-Jones inspires the Scottish orchestra to create some of the great performances they have placed on disc. The best known is the rugged seascape of Tintagel on the Atlantic coast of England, a part of the world steeped in history. Debussy and Dukas do lurk in the background, but Bax worked with a much wider tonal range, the big dramatic moments painted in blazing colours.

Standing ovation, but a half-empty house
By Maria Iliakova Published: Monday, February 7, 2005 He who divines the secret of my music is delivered from the misery that haunts the world," Beethoven once said. The all-Beethoven program played by the Kansas City Symphony last weekend resonated in the Lyric Theater to an audience eager to experience the mystery of the music.
Guest conductor Stefan Sanderling of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra led the Kansas City Symphony in a beautiful and energetic performance. Pianist William Wolfram joined the orchestra to play Beethoven's Concerto No. 5, "Emperor."
The concerto's grand phrasing and tempestuous solo passages for piano foreshadow centuries of music to come. The orchestra seamlessly fitted Wolfram's timing and the virtuosity of the score. The Kansas City Symphony outperformed itself with refreshing vivacity and dedication to a dynamically extensive performance.
Wolfram's technical ability shone with a nearly tangible splendor. He played passages, especially in the movement I, with incredible balance between treble and clef, at times creating unimaginably delicate and stirring music. Wolfram's apparent love of dramatic show and attachment to the right pedal, however, served to hinder his otherwise sincere movement III. Nevertheless, his technique glided his fingers through difficult arpeggios and scales while details emerged brilliantly during his solo moments.
