PHILIP GLASS - METAMORPHOSIS
KHA 005 BACH - GOLDBERG VARIATIONS CLAVES 50-2407 J S Bach’s ‘Goldberg’ Variations is the last of a series of keyboard music works that the composer published under the title of Clavierübung . Many people consider this the most serious and challenging composition that has ever been written for harpsichord. Based on a single bass theme, the variations prove Bach’s profound understanding of many musical styles as well as his exceptional performing technique. This largest of all clavier pieces encapsulates the whole history of Baroque variation, as Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations later did for the Classical period. It requires a performer capable of virtuoso techniques and this outstanding recording the work is by the brilliant young Swiss pianist Cédric Pescia, gold medallist of the 2002 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition held in Salt Lake City. His performances during the competition also earned him a $30,000 prize, the peer jury prize, and worldwide concert and recital opportunities. As well as appearing at many leading music festivals he is a soloist with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Utah Symphony, the Festival Strings of Lucerne, and the Sinfonie Orchester Berlin.

I'm Just Wild About EubieMemories of Eubie Blake
The 1969 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival featured one of the best collections of musical talent ever assembled. It starred Count Basie and His Orchestra (whose members included Buck Clayton, Dicky Wells, Buddy Tate, and Earl Warren). The six-day festival also included performances by Benny Carter, Roy Eldridge, Bobby Hackett, Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Milt Hinton, Jacki Byard, Alan Dawson, and Bob Green. New Orleans bands led by Jim Robinson, Sharkey Bonano, Pete Fountain, Al Hirt, Louis Cottrell, and Johnny Wiggs also appeared. Barry Martyn brought his group of young jazzmen from England, and Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band came from Denmark. Dizzy Gillespie, Roland Kirk, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond, Eddie Miller, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Zutty Singleton, Harry Shields, Tony Parenti, and Sarah Vaughan rounded out the roster of jazz giants. Amid this mind-boggling array of talent, the festival's most impressive segment may have been a twelve-minute interval by a frail, eighty-six-year-old pianist. He needed assistance entering the stage when producer Willis Conover announced his name. As the applause mounted, his halting gait became a vigorous stride, until at last the little man was scampering toward the piano bench with his hands clasped over his head like a prize fighter. The next few moments were sheer magic. The pianist played with power and joy, juxtaposing an intricate right-hand melody against an electrifying left-handed "oom-pah" bass to create an intense ragtime syncopation.

It was first played by him in New York 1932. The theme is not actually by Corelli. It is an ancient dance melody called La Folia which has been quoted or varied by various composers down the ages, including Bach, Cherubini and Liszt.

Chesky Records proudly presents Remembrances, a record showcasing the multi-faceted Mr. Faddis with support from a hand-picked fourteen-piece jazz orchestra.
Fans familiar with Mr. Faddis’ storming, take-no-prisoners style will find Remembrances a revelation. Leading with Duke Ellington’s timeless ”Sophisticated Lady,” Mr. Faddis plays pretty for the people, displaying a confidence that results from his virtuosity upon the instrument he has played since the tender age of eight and through his tenure with jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie. Conductor Carlos Franzetti has arranged the ten selections with emphasis on the saxes and winds, resulting in a lush, glowing sound recalling the urbanity of Count Basie’s glory days. With featured players like David Hazeltine on piano and Portraits Of Cuba Grammy-winner Paquito D’Rivera, Jon Faddis and Co. swing and strut through a dealer’s choice of time-honored jazz, including compositions by John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Dave and Iola Brubeck.

Ever since we started working with Stephen in 1996 recording these concertos has been on the agenda: it’s probably been the project closest to his heart. But it took several years before we found the orchestra and conductor that we felt would do justice to this important project. The combination of Dallas and Litton offers a conductor who adores Rachmaninov (he has recorded all the symphonies) and understands the works from a pianist’s perspective, an orchestra with a glorious and old-fashioned string sound of the kind with which the composer would be familiar, a hall to record in which is one of the best in the world, and let’s not forget Stephen Hough who has already won two Gramophone ‘Record of the Year’ accolades for his concerto recordings. As the results here triumphantly show, all our hopes have been fulfilled, and more. Apart from the ‘Paganini Rhapsody’, recorded after a concert performance, these are essentially ‘live’ recordings. Over a period of eighteen days eleven concerts were given, with each concerto being played several times. From these we have pieced together an ‘ideal’ performance – free of coughs, noises and the few musical mishaps which occurred, but still capturing the excitement of what was, by common consent, a sensational series of concerts.

pianist/conductor Morton Gould, who worked with Gershwin, More conventionalare the fine remake by earl wild with the vastly underrated Arthur Fiedler
    http://www.classicalnotes.net/classics/gershwin.html
Composers' own records have unique value. More clearly than verbal descriptions or even written notation, they document the creator's conception, inspire understanding and guide further interpretation. Among the most essential of these is George Gershwin's brilliant 1924 record of his Rhapsody in Blue Apparently, at one point Gershwin had mentioned his desire to write a serious piece incorporating jazz and pop elements to Paul Whiteman, whose dance band was among the most popular in America. Nothing more came of this until January 3, 1924, when Whiteman announced an eclectic concert to take place at New York City's Aeolian Hall, with the bold purpose of displaying modern American music in all its varieties. Whiteman went on to proclaim that Gershwin was at work on a jazz concerto which would receive its premiere at the event. This was news to Gershwin, who read about it in the next day's paper along with the rest of the world. Gershwin protested that he had nothing in progress except a new show and was headed to Boston for a tryout. Worse yet, the Whiteman concert was slated for February 12! Despite the confusion, Whiteman apparently persuaded Gershwin to accept his commission. Gershwin later recalled that he formed the concept of the piece on his way to Boston, inspired in part by the rhythmic noises of the train ride. Upon returning to his New York apartment, he produced a two-piano score to be orchestrated by Whiteman's top arranger. Best remembered for his glitzy but trifling

New York’s annual Rock Hotel Pianofest takes a rock-concert approach (complete with “opening acts” and multiple bills) to programming a collection of otherwise classical-piano recitals. Opening this year’s series of shows is virtuosic pianist-composer Earl Wild. He'll join us for a conversation and a listen to his latest CD, which features the piano works of Brahms. Plus, the vocal ensemble Chanticleer, best known for digging up the obscure and ignored songs of Renaissance Europe, performs live in the studio. This time around, the group sings all manner of Americana.
The 86-year-old Earl Wild got an early start in musical composition, when, as a teenager, he composed piano transcriptions and arrangements for chamber orchestra for local radio stations and concert halls.
    More about Earl Wild
As a grad student in musicology, Chanticleer founder Louis Botto decided to form a choir that would perform the neglected vocal music of the medieval and Renaissance periods.
