Brill, Elissa
of Holyoke, Massachusetts Etude: floating and then not (piano solo)
The composer writes: " Etude grew out of a conversation I had with a colleague. We were contemplating what it is about some pieces of music that makes them feel like they are floating on air, and what it is about some other pieces that makes them seem to be so close to the earth. Although there are many other elements at work, one important element seemed to be the nature of the rhythmic resolution. It is the treatment of rhythm that I chose to explore in this piece. The form is ABA, where each A section is mostly floating and the B section is mostly not."

Texas Tech Health Science Center President Dr. Smith. (A-J Photo / Brad Farris) Billed as a concert titled "Celebrate," the program also boasted an ongoing tale revolving around a despondent Tech mascot, a tuxedo-clad Raider Red. Happily for Raider Red, the finale found Tech Chancellor John Montford announcing from center stage that the initial $162 million of his $300 million Horizon Campaign for Tech already has been raised. Montford also pulled a few rabbits out of his figurative hat, making sure that the show - and financial figures - were heard in person by Texas Speaker of the House Pete Laney and former Texas governors Preston Smith, Dolph Briscoe, Mark White and Ann Richards. Co-hosts Ann Sanders Oliver and G.W. Bailey earned a plethora of laughs, though it was difficult to determine how much was scripted by Norman A. Bert and how many ad libs were hilariously tossed in by Bailey.

Gae Jun 15 2005, 01:32 PM There's no "one" answer to this. It all depends on your reading ability, the difficulty of the music and also its tempo. Generally speaking, fast pieces usually need to be played from memory.
Here are my current pieces and how I am approaching them
1)Bach Prelude and Fugue.........reading
2)Beethoven Presto alla Tedesca....from memory
3)Arabesque No. 1 Debussy....reading and doing page turns
Gae AnotherPianist Jun 15 2005, 02:52 PM I memorise. But I absolutely hate it becasue it takes me forever to play a new piece. My teacher thinks its better to sight-read, but what do you lot think?
The ideal is to be able to do both (something I think that most people would agree with)
Then in my opinion sight-reading alone comes next (for efficiency of learning): this obviously becomes reading rather than sight-reading when the piece has been practised for a while.

You'll probably feel very vulnerable showing your video to the group - but don't worry - everyone worries about it, and everyone feels the same, and everyone agrees afterwards (or we all did on our course!) that it was a very worthwhile experience. It's a bit weird watching yourself - "do I really say that? That's the 15th time I've said "do you know what I mean?"! Gosh doesn't my hair look awful!!!! "

James Giles, piano
This debut recital in France by the American pianist James Giles offered, besides the obvious pleasure of discovering an artist, a program composed of widely varied works from Nicolai Medtner to Ned Rorem, without neglecting the more traditional repertoire with Schubert, Ravel and Liszt. It must be recognized that in this particular case we are speaking of a true revelation, due equally to the pianist's artistry and to his choice of program. Here was an authentic pianist, in the true sense of the word, a real musician exploiting the full range of his instrument, spanning a vast repertoire, without drawing unnecessary attention to himself. Here is a pianist who seems to blend with his instrument, really "working" it in the most concrete sense, with a measure of humility and great rigor. With James Giles, there are neither showy effects nor pathos, but extreme technique and concentration, virtually palpable, and a great power combined with intense control.
