The University
Keyboard students at the University of Evansville study with highly skilled teacher-performers in the context of a small, closely-knit liberal arts institution. The low student-faculty ratio and teaching emphasis of the university give all keyboard students the benefit of close personal contact with their teachers and each other.
Student Performances
The small size of the department-around 120 students-ensures that all students have ample opportunity to participate in master classes , weekly studio classes, weekly student recitals, a concerto competition and degree recitals. Keyboard students at UE also have the opportunity to accompany singers, instrumentalists and choirs and to participate in large and small ensembles, benefitting from frequent coachings by different faculty members. Students perform on two Bösendorfer concert grand pianos, four organs made by Holtkamp, Fisk, and Reuter and two harpsichords made by Dowd and Jones.
Visiting Artists
In addition to frequent faculty solo and chamber performances, the Department of Music hosts an organ series

Adding Notes: A Reflection on Interpretive Freedom
by John Salmon Several battle cries for interpretive freedom have converged in my mind recently: John Perry, speaking to an audience at last year's Music Teachers National Association convention in Los Angeles, exhorted pianists to view the Urtext as only the beginning of the interpretive process; without creativity, Perry argued, no score, however "definitive," will ever come to life in performance. Robert Weirich, speaking to the same group in Los Angeles, urged us to consider "the spirit of improvisation" that caused such works as Beethoven's "Rage Over the Lost Penny" and Mozart's Adagio in B Minor, K. 540, to come to life, even accepting (if not demonstrating at that moment) the esthetic legitimacy of spontaneous note-changing. William Westney, in the August/September 1999 issue of American Music Teacher , warns against the perils of perfectionism, stressing beauty as the true goal of practice and performance. Robert Levin, at a 92nd Street Y gathering, defended ornamentation in Schubert.

The Romantic Piano Concerto, Vol 28
Sigismond Stojowski Excerpts from the sleeve notes Hailed throughout Europe as one of Poland’s most outstanding composers at the fin de siècle, Zygmunt (Sigismond) Stojowski (1870-1946) has slipped into oblivion in today’s musical world, even in his native Poland. As a young man Stojowski was recognised as one of the first Polish symphonists of great European calibre. His orchestral music was heard and played by the finest orchestras in Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, London, Manchester, Paris and St Petersburg in the 1890s, when the composer was only in his twenties. Tchaikovsky was scheduled to conduct Stojowski’s Suite in E flat Op 9 in 1894, and in 1895, by command of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, Stojowski’s cantata Le Printemps, Op 7, was premiered in English at a State Concert at Buckingham Palace. For two decades Stojowski’s position as one of Poland’s most outstanding composers was unquestioned. Stojowski’s decline in popularity was due to his die-hard Romanticism in a world on the brink of a musical revolution that dramatically changed styles, tastes and compositional techniques. Even though one can find some influences of Impressionism in his Second Piano Concerto, the composer basically refused to change. In fact, for all practical purposes he stopped composing around World War I and directed his energy into performance and teaching. Unfortunately, a century later his music is often considered old-fashioned, schmaltzy or – as one British critic put it – ‘high tosh’.

Pianist William Westney led music students through physical exercises before they performed for his "un-master" class.

'Un-master' class helps musicians
tune their inner instruments Acclaimed pianist and music professor William Westney is not fomenting revolution among music students, but his "un-master classes," like the one he held at Yale, do fly in the face of certain staid traditions. Standing in front of the class, Westney began by asking the students to try to remember a particularly moving performance, their own or someone else's. After the physical exercises had, as Westney put it, "opened the class up in that two-year-old way," he declared that the students were ready for the performance phase of the workshop. He told the students that, unlike normal master classes, they could not critique their fellow performers for their technical skills they could only respond by saying, "here's what I got out of it." 10/09/98: Talks on American Liberalism, Politics and Privacy, and Mt. Everest to be Presented at Yale this Week
New Haven, Conn. The following talks at Yale University Oct. 12-19 are free and open to the public, unless noted otherwise. San Francisco mayor to speak on campus Willie L. Brown Jr., mayor of San Francisco, will be the featured guest at two events on campus on Monday, Oct. 12. At 4 p.m., he will speak informally at a tea in the Calhoun College master's house, 189 Elm St. Later that day, at 7:30 p.m., he will address the Yale Political Union in Rm. 102 of Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St. Both events are open to the public, and the master's tea is free. Members of the Yale Political Union are admitted free to the evening talk; there is an admission fee of $3 for nonmembers. Brown was sworn in as San Francisco's first African-American mayor in January 1996. He previously served for 31 years in the California State Assembly, to which he was elected 16 times. In 1980 he was elected the first African-American speaker of the assembly, a post he held for an unprecedented 15 years. While in the assembly, Brown became known for his advocacy of civil and human rights. In the 1980s, he was an outspoken critic of apartheid in South Africa and coauthored a bill that required the state of California to divest its investments there. Raised in poverty in Texas, Brown moved to San Francisco after high school and earned both his undergraduate and law degrees in California. Newsweek magazine has called him one of the 25 "most dynamic" mayors in America. His many honors include a Presidential Award from the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, the African American Parent Council's Award of Honor and the National Conference of Black Mayors President's Award.
