What's on... Festival offers showcase opportunity to young talent
Two concerts on Saturday 25 June explore musical gems from the world of medieval music. Firstly, Misericordia, perform some of the earliest known songs in the English language, accompanied by a host of early instruments including recorder, citole, pibcorn and hurdy gurdy. Then as night closes in and the church is lit by candlelight, Bragod, featuring the voice of Mary-Anne Roberts and Robert Evans on crwth give an atmospheric late night recital featuring (appropriately!) some of the earliest known songs in the Welsh language.
The Lower Machen Festival also gratefully acknowledges the support the 2005 festival has received from The Arts Council of Wales, Caerphilly County Borough Council, Newport City Council, the Welsh Composers Guild and RVW Trust.

Preamble
Of the hundreds of medium-sized international piano competitions that take place across the globe, the triennial London International Piano Competition is perhaps the most prestigious. For starters, London is one city which nobody except the terminally bored (to borrow a quote from Samuel Johnson) ever tires of. And it has a track record of discovering pianistic talents way before they hit the big time. The size of the competition is modest (it admits only 24 participants each edition, with a final concerto round for three pianists) but its ratio of producing quality more than matches heavyweight competitions such as the Van Cliburn (Fort Worth, Texas), Chopin (Warsaw), Tchaikovsky (Moscow), Queen Elisabeth (Brussels) and Leeds. IOS Thanks Past Soloists Ian Fountain Autumn Concert 2004 ~ Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No 1, Op 23
In 1989 Ian Fountain became the youngest winner of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition in Tel Aviv at the age of 19. He began playing the piano at the age of five and he was a chorister at New College, Oxford. He continued his studies at Winchester College and at the Royal Northern College of Music, working with Robert Bottone and Sulamita Aronovsky. Since that time Ian Fountain has performed extensively throughout Europe, the USA, the Middle East and the UK. As a recitalist Ian Fountain has appeared in major centres such as New York, Paris, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Tel Aviv, Chicago and London. As a chamber music player Ian Fountain enjoys many longstanding collaborations with musicians such as Ulf Hoelscher, David Geringas and the Mandelring and Emperor Quartets. Since 2001 Ian Fountain has been a piano professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Please click here for a photograph of Ian.

4. Mit Feuer The Denali Trio was established in 2003, after the artists collaborated at the Marlboro and Ravinia Festivals. Members of the Trio have worked with such artists as Mitsuko Uchida, Richard Goode, Kim Kashkashian, Hilary Hahn and members of the Guarneri and Juilliard Quartets and the Beaux Arts Trio.
Their debut tour of the UK in February 2004 was an outstanding success, garnering enthusiastic reviews and resulting in numerous other invitations. Future plans include further visits to the UK, a tour of the USA and their debut recording for Naxos, featuring the complete Trios of Frank Bridge. The Denali Trio was recently selected as a Concert Promoters Network Artist for the 2005/6 season. Violinist Jesse Mills graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School as a student of Robert Mann in 2001. As soloist he has performed with the Teatro Argentino Orchestra in Buenos Aires, the New Jersey Symphony, the Sarah Lawrence College Symphony, the Plainfield Symphony, the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, and Aspen Music Festival's Sinfonia Orchestra as winner of the Festival's E. Nakamichi Violin Concerto Competition. His chamber music performances have taken place at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, New York City's Merkin Concert Hall and Bargemusic, the Rising Stars series at Caramoor, the Ravinia Festival's Bennett-Gordon Hall, and at the Marlboro Music Festival. He has performed chamber music with such artists as Richard Goode, David Soyer, Donald Weilerstein, Anton Kuerti, Peter Wiley, Miriam Fried, Claude Frank, and Fred Sherry.
