The New Generations series gave a fine opportunity to visit or revisit a number of the city churches by Wren and others for short recitals, convenient for city workers on their way home, and mostly within walking distance to concerts later in the evenings. At the very beautiful St Olave's Church in the City, where Samuel Pepys and his wife are buried; Elisabeth [ pictured ] looking down over the piano, we enjoyed a recital by Ashley Wass , a thoughtful pianist who won the first World Piano Competition in London and chose solo piano music by Cesar Franck for his debut CD Wass framed his programme with pieces from the Swiss book of Liszt's musical travel diary; sensitive, warm playing, never bombastic nor perfunctory in the more dramatic and overtly virtuosic passages, showing this unfavourite composer of mine to best advantage, in contrast to a recent unhappy experience from a far more famous Liszt specialist. Similar approaches stood him in good stead for Prokofiev's 3rd sonata (a reworking of earlier material) and for Bartok's

“Misha Dacic made an impressive American debut last May at the Miami International Piano Festival. Now in his mid-20s, he is clearly an artist equipped with an awesome technique and a taste for keyboard barnburners.” —Lawrence Johnson, Sun-Sentinel Born in 1978 into a musical family in the former Yugoslavia, Misha Dacic first came to the public attention at age eleven when he performed a Haydn Piano Concerto with a local orchestra. Shortly afterwards, he entered the class of Kemal Gekic at the University of Novi Sad in Belgrade, where he received his early training. In 1998, he was accepted at the invitation of Lazar Berman into the prestigious school for pianists in Imola, Italy and continued his studies with Berman through 2003. He made his successful American debut at the “Discovery Series” of the Sixth Miami International Piano Festival in 2003. That same year, Dacic performed at the "Martha Argerich Project Festival” in Lugano, Switzerland, at the Miami International Piano Festival in Lecce, Italy, at the University of Miami’s “Festival Miami” and at the “Piano Lovers” series at the Steinway Piano Gallery of Boca Raton—in each case with a recital celebrating the centenary of Vladimir Horowitz, whose repertoire and style he admires.

RHINEGOLD PUBLISHING
JEREMY SIEPMANN'S EDITORIAL
from the current issue of PIANO
'Nothing succeeds like success,' says the old saw. But success can also provoke hostility, envy and misinformation. In his lifetime, Felix Mendelssohn was the man who had everything. Born rich, he was both brilliant and charming, not only a great musician, a great genius indeed, but a man of many talents and accomplishments, who consorted with the highest in the land (in many lands), while seemingly having time for everyone, whatever their background or attainment.
In the world of classical music, he was the ultimate celebrity – particularly in German-speaking lands and in England, where he was all but worshipped. Unlike many distinguished men, his reputation survived him. Towards the end of the 19th century, however, he fell from grace. His importance was deemed increasingly negligible, and even well into the 20th century, his claims to greatness as a composer were held by many to be spurious. On no account, in many quarters, was his name to be mentioned in the same breath as those of his contemporaries Chopin, Liszt and Schumann, let alone Brahms, later on. Today, however, his star is once more in the ascendant as his importance is being reaffirmed.
But it's not all Mendelssohn and things Mendelssohnian. In Unsung Heroes, Murray McLachlan explores the music of Boris Tchaikovsky, Leslie Howard talks about his indefatigable journey into the nether reaches of Lisztiana, Alyn Shipton meets Ray Bryant, and John York, as ever, catches up on the latest music publications.
