Diary of a Concert Pianist Click on images for larger photographs Dear Readers: I keep a Concert Tour diary during my travels, and have decided to share with you some of its highlights. After my recent Lincoln Center recital in New York, I wanted this season to be filled with the greatest possible variety of performance experiences. I can't include every concert, because this will be a season that takes me literally around the globe, to solo with symphonies as far away as Bombay, and play my South American debut in Brazil. I will perform "from sea to shining sea" here in the U.S. and travel to the extremities of North America for performances in Canada and Mexico. I will play for royalty in the most opulent palaces of Europe and for audiences in the poorest regions of India. I'll include pictures when I can, and share some of the experiences along the way that make a life of music-making such a great calling. Welcome to my Concert Tour Diary! August - Lake Country, NJ: This is time of physical and psychological preparation for the coming concert season. I spend this time at our Lakehouse and practice in a converted Boathouse at the water's edge. My audiences here are swans, herons, ducks, kingfishers, turtles, muskrats, and any other creature who chooses to sail by. The wildlife have grown accustomed to my presence and consider beautiful piano music to be a natural component of their environment.

Letter From Budapest
from Teresa Walters
Classical New Jersey
April 21, 1999 March 18, 1999 Dear Readers, I am at the halfway stage in my Hungarian tour. Everything is going extremely well, and I have promised my husband Jeff that I will take today off. Tonight we are scheduled to attend the ballet at the Hungarian State Opera House ( Sheherezade , one of my favorites!). I am drinking strong Hungarian cappuccino in the coffee shop of the elegant Gellert Hotel in Buda, overlooking the Duna (Danube) River. There has been a hotel here since the time of the Roman Empire, primarily because of the mineral springs on this site, famous for its therapeutic baths. Jeff is trying out the baths for an hour or two, so this is an ideal time for me to write to all of you. I have not performed in Eastern Europe since the decline of Communism, and this is my first trip to Hungary. It is a profound musical pilgrimage for me to perform in the country of Liszt's birth. The flight from Newark to Munich seemed relatively short compared to my 23-hour flight to Sydney, Australia, last November. For both trips, I explained to the airlines that I am a concert pianist with recitals soon after my arrival. Both Quantas and Lufthansa gave me an entire row of seats so that I could sleep during the night flights. I am grateful, because jet lag is always a factor for international performances, and I am playing a very physically demanding program. When we arrived, the

Join voices with the NFCC Community Chorus
Dr. Rebecca Burkart, who leads the music program at North Florida Community College, has put out a call for voices of all ages and abilities to join the NFCC Community Chorus. Rehearsals are Mondays from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Hardee Music Center, NFCC. The first session is Aug. 29, but the chorus welcomes all interested singers for Monday rehearsals. “No experience is required,” said Burkart, ‘just a willingness to learn, plenty of enthusiasm and commitment.” The chorus performs for college and community events throughout the year. Dr. Arnold Burkart, professor emeritus of music education from Ball State University, is co-directing with Dr. Rebecca Burkart. The chorus may be taken for one-hour college credit or as a non-credit Community Education course. Some fees apply.
