Joel selected a better pianist than himself to record the works and the session was held in Vienna because of the musical/philosophical connections for him. He alludes in his own notes to ghosts or spirits - that there is something in the atmosphere in Vienna that connects one to this sort of music. That connected me with the recordings by Rosemary Brown of some years back who claimed to have a string of famous composers such as Schubert and Beethoven dictate new piano pieces to her from the Beyond. Joel's pieces remind me strongly of Brown's - having many qualities undeniably of the particular composer in question but still sounding like that composer on a rather "off" day. The most original aspect of this CD is the cover art - an accurate imitation of the front of the G. Schirmer piano music collections which every piano student has carried around and struggled with. His technique is seamless, his ability not only to play but also to shape and project every one of the torrents of notes is breathtaking". Well, what prompted me to buy this disc was firstly the two pieces

This disc
should convince even some die-hards that Arcadi Volodos can play with more subtlety than a Mack truck. For anyone who doesn’t have that preconception, it should be delightful. Another complaint about Volodos is that he plays everything like it is Rachmaninoff. Vladimir Horowitz used to get a similar rap, which plays for an ironic parallel. For most of his career, Volodos’ primary focus has seemed to be channeling Horowitz, playing Volodya’s transcriptions and some of the warhorses for which he was well known (Rachnaninoff 3 rd and Tchaikovsky 1 st concertos). Now the pendulum has swung to Volodos’ supposedly bad habits being compared to Horowitz’s as well. From this disc, it looks like a second pendulum has swung back – away from Horowitz and, perhaps, toward Volodos’ true métier. As much as he tried, Horowitz could never play Schubert convincingly. Volodos takes to it as though born to it, and perhaps he was. Raised in a family of singers and trained as such before turning to the keyboard, Volodos plays these two sonatas not only persuasively, but as though he has had a long an intimate association with their composer’s writing – which of course he has.

http://www.sonyclassical.com/music/89647/
Arcadi Volodos has established himself as one of the world's leading pianists, whose performances as recitalists, concerto soloist and recording artist have won acclaim for coupling breathtaking technical mastery with a profound and eloquent musicality. On his new recital CD , Volodos captures the gentle whimsy and quiet elegance of the seldom-heard Schubert Sonata in E major. Volodos also performs Liszt's transcription of Schubert's dialogue-song "Der Muller und der Bach" (one of more than fifty Schubert song transcriptions, Liszt published between 1839 and 1846). Highlights of Volodos' Sony Classical catalog included his self-titled, first recording, featuring transcriptions of works by Rachmaninoff, Schubert, Bach, Mozart and others. The recording instantly had critics comparing him to the great Vladimir Horowitz - a name too easily used for comparison of pianistic talents. But in Volodos' case it is a fitting analogy. Volodos possesses the same uncanny ability to combine virtuosity and passion, reaching audiences' emotions and intellect in ways only Horowtiz could. Among the honors this album received were Gramophone's Editor's choice, and Classic CD's Disc of the Year. The piano world has not witnessed an artist of this caliber in quite some time. Volodos' Carnegie Hall recital debut, a historical performance recorded by Sony Classical received Gramophone award for Best Instrumental Recording of the year.

60. Arcadi Volodos Plays Transcriptions
arcadi volodos, piano (Sony Classical SK 62691) arcadi volodos resurrectsthe lost art of improvisation and transcription with his debut album
http://web.singnet.com.sg/~lionelc/volodos.html
Piano transcriptions Arcadi Volodos, piano (Sony Classical SK 62691) Listen to an extract of this disc: either as streaming Realaudio or download the sound clip Category : Instrumental - Baroque - Romantic - 20 th -century Arcadi Volodos resurrects the lost art of improvisation and transcription with his debut album consisting entirely of piano transcriptions. This young Russian firebrand had set the music world ablaze with this sensational album, which was greeted with hyperbole by critics. The success of this album can be attributed to two factors: the flashy repertoire and the Horowitz-class virtuoso piano-playing. The titles on the album alone can set the heart racing: A generous portion of the disc is dedicated to pianistic fireworks such as the Tchaikovsky-Feinberg Scherzo (from Tchaikovsky's ), Cziffra’s Bumblebee Etude and two Horowitz transcriptions which Volodos had transcribed by ear. Note-wise, the Horowitz pieces ( Carmen Variations and the Liszt-Horowitz Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 ) sound exactly like the original versions by the late Russian. However, Volodos is no mere emulator: He plays these transcriptions with a style that is all his own. The playing is generally less incisive and more rounded, and Horowitz’s sly, demonic wit is replaced by Volodos’ brighter sense of fun and humour. Other delightful finds in the disc include Volodos’ own arrangement of two Rachmaninoff songs
