Alexander Shchetinsky is an important Ukrainian composer whose works, which include a variety of instrumental and vocal compositions, have been widely performed, to considerable acclaim, throughout Europe. Proficient in a variety of avant-garde modes of expression, Shchetinsky seeks, and attains, a personal synthesis of stylistic modalities, thereby transcending mere eclecticism.
His style is essentially that of a structuralist, relying on a synthesis of a variety of modernist techniques and exploring in each piece a particular musical metaphor. This method explains his reliance on pieces with descriptive titles. The influence of an especially eastern European variety of minimalism (more meditative and less didactic) is also apparent in the carefully worked out relationship between different degrees of sound and silence, the predominance of soft dynamics, and in the smallest details and changes in pitch, timbre and rhythm. VogelKwartet/Braxtaal VogelKwartet COME TO CATCH YOUR VOICE LopLop LLR 006 Braxtaal DWORR BUUN Kontrans 448 The Braxtaal offering (the third outing by a group which has been together since 1987) fares much better, precisely because Blonk's lyrics are written in "Onderlands.. which sounds like Dutch [though] even native speakers of that language cannot understand it." The texts are included, all scan and rhyme perfectly and they evidently mean something to Blonk, who declaims them with gothick Jabberwockian intensity. Rob Daenen and Theo Bodewes both use their samplers to great effect, and Bodewes also contributes some hard-driving percussion. Strip away the wacky lyrics and some of the wilder samples, and this is basically an indie rock cabaret album, and a very entertaining one at that. Comments? email the author

    Early life
Born in St. Petersburg Russia , Shostakovich was a child prodigy as both a pianist and composer. His family seems to have been politically liberal and tolerant (one of his uncles was a Bolshevik , but the family also sheltered far-right extremists). In , he wrote a funeral march in memory of two leaders of the Kadet party , murdered by Bolshevik sailors. In , he was allowed to enter the Petrograd Conservatory , then headed by Alexander Glazunov . However, he suffered for his perceived lack of political zeal, and initially failed his exam in Marxist methodology in . His first major musical achievement was the First Symphony ), written as his graduation piece.
After graduation, he initially embarked on a dual career as a concert pianist and composer, but his dry style of playing was unappreciated. He won an "honorable mention" at the 1927 Warsaw International Piano Competition. After the competition, Shostakovich met conductor Bruno Walter First Symphony that he conducted the premiere in Berlin later that year. After that, Shostakovich concentrated on composing music and soon limited performances primarily to those of his own works. In he wrote his Second Symphony (subtitled To October ). While writing the symphony, he also began his

I ended my last report fleeing from the ticket touts at Yuri Bashmet’s 50th birthday extravaganza towards the Stanislavsky/Nemirov-Danchenko Theatre (officially the Moscow Musical Theatre), Moscow’s other large-scale serious music-theatre venue after the Bolshoi. Arriving at one minute before curtain-up, I dashed in and bought a spare ticket from an elderly lady in the foyer (about £4) without grasping exactly what was on — the posters announced two Russian words unknown to me, ‘Tshchetnaya Predostorozhnost’ by one Gerold. When I had settled in my seat with a programme I just had time to realize that this was in fact the ballet La fille mal gardée of Herold.

    Who Is t.A.T.u.?
t.A.T.u. (pronounced "Tatoo") is a Russian vocal duet composed of Julia Volkova and Lena Katina . The band was conceived by producer Ivan Shapovalov, a former child psychologist and producer of TV commercials. Lena and Julia used to sing together in a kids-band called "Neposedi". Lena and Julia met again during an audition at MOSFILM studios, when Ivan Shapovalov was looking for girls for his new band. They were selected independently out of 500 contenders. The group's name is spelled "Òàòó" in the Russian Cyrillic character set (still pronounced "Tatoo"), and means "this girl that girl" or "this girl loves that girl" (implied). Their first album, "200Km/hr In The Wrong Lane", has been a huge international success all over the world, including Eastern and Western Europe, the Americas, Asia, Austrailia and New Zealand.
