JAZZ CARNAVAL IN ODESSA 2003
The 3 rd International Jazz Festival “Jazz Carnival in Odessa 2003” was held in September 2003 as an event which has already become traditional. Two previous “carnivals” were so successful that in 2003 the program was extended by an additional day. Notable novelties also included the closing ceremony which for the first time was held outdoors – on the stage in front of the worldwide famous Odessa Opera House. It can be said with confidence that the slogan “ Odessa Kiev , and the popular Russian radio and TV personality, also acting as the art director of the Moscow Fund for Support of Jazz Music, Mikhail Mitropolskiy.  Jazz Carnival-2003 received a lion’s share of resonance in the press, while the September periodicals in Odessa , and far beyond its reach, devoted special articles to the festival. At this stage one may already speak of an established tradition and congratulate the South Palmira with its own jazz festival of a high level.  Participants: The Oleg Lundstrem Big Band conducted by Georgiy Garanyan Russia Ensemble “Er.J.Orchestra”

Sergey Letov
Brief History of New Improvisatory Music in Soviet Russia
The pioneer of the New Improvisatory Music, who is still performing, is cellist and guitarist Vladislav Makarov . from Smolensk. Makarov never played jazz. Never. Like many youths he was in rock-music, playing in some beat group. But by the end of the 70’s he developed his own, like nothing else, abstract cello “language”. Makarov is an artist by profession; he transposed principles of modern graphic arts on cello plying. It was like implementations of Klein’s, Hartung’s and Jackson Pollock’s lines in cello. It’s worth mentioning, that Makarov, like Lukin, has no academic education in cello playing, being a self-taught musician. In spite of a considerable popularity of Ganelin’s trio, Soviet jazz critics did not like them, except for a wonderful Leningrad music philosopher Efim Semyonovich Barban, who used to publish the only USSR jazz magazine “Kvadrat” (“Square”). Though he did not immediately become a GNC adept. First, he didn’t accept their music, continuing to praise the epigonous jazz quartet of Nosov-Goldstein (Leningrad, an imitation of Ornette Coleman – Eric Dolphy quartet, which was not bad for our poor jazz scene of those days). Gradually, E.S. Barban became the main ideologist of free jazz (he wrote a very interesting book “Black Music - White Freedom”). In his articles Barban gradually started to separate new jazz from easy listening music, applying analytical methods, associated with structuralism.

The University of Michigan and CREES preeminence in the study of Poland also continues. University of Michigan is one of the few institutions in the United States offering four levels of Polish language instruction. In March, CREES will offer a mini-course on rock music and the demise of communism, and the eminent Polish rock singer, Kora Jackowska, will present the Annual Copernicus Lecture. In addition, we have established the new Copernicus Fellowship for Incoming Graduate Students in Polish Studies beginning with applicants for the 2004-05 academic year. Research and teaching on Central Eurasia have been strengthened with support from our Title VI grant. Three new course, two on Central Asia and one on Islamic Movements in Comparative Perspective, as well as four related lectures, will be offered in Winter 2004, jointly sponsored by CREES and the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies (CMENAS). The CREES Brown Bag Series includes talks on Russian-Korean links, the Balkans and Greece in discourse over the "center of Europe," the aesthetics of national mobilization in Poland, politics in East Central Europe, and the dispute between Russia and Japan over the Kurile Islands.

Soprano, tenor sax, flutes, shakuhachi flute, composer, arranger Born in Moscow, Russia Oct. 8, 1945, Anatole taught himself to play saxophones and flutes while in his teens. He played Russia's best jazz bands since mid-60s. In early 70s, world best jazz bands started to visit USSR: Duke Ellington Orchestra, then Thad Jones - Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Toots Thielemans and others. Anatole played with all of them. This time playing jazz in Soviet Union became different because of Soviet bureaucracy's bad attitude to American music, and many jazz musicians have lost their job. Anatole left Russia for New York in 1973. His first job was for Duke Ellington, and when Duke died in 1974, Anatole continued to play for the orchestra led by Duke's son Mercer for some time and even recorded an album for Fantasy Records as orchestra's member. In the next two decades, Anatole played with Thad Jones - Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, recorded with John Scofield, Jaco Pastorius and many others. He also wrote music for TV, movies and theater. Some of his top film works are: The Solar Energy, a documentary, together with John Scofield (1981);
