oleg volkov (January 1999, Issue 44) Interviewed by Robert Cummings both Classics and Cosmik, including this one with world class pianist oleg volkov.
    http://www.cosmik.com/aa-junejuly05/cosmik_conversations.html
Ten years, we've been doing this. The first use of the term "Cosmik Conversations" came on our very first anniversary. In that issue, the table of contents referred to the first of our now-traditional interview highlight montages as "One Year Of Cosmik Interviews," but the switch was in by the time you clicked in to the actual piece. Since then, each yearly montage has carried that name, as well as dozens of our more in-depth interviews. The idea behind the yearly Cosmik Conversations article was simple enough. Instead of setting off fireworks, banging on drums and making an entire "look at us" issue, we'd celebrate our anniversaries with a single piece that brought back memories from the year gone by, while elsewhere in the issue we'd just get on with the business of starting the next year. We're very excited about our 10th anniversary, but we're going to resist the urge to party too hard. We're going to stick to our tradition. Except this time, we are including interviews from our entire 10 year history. Normally, we've had plenty of graphics in our Cosmik Conversations montages, even though that always generates quite a bit of e-mail from frustrated readers who are still stuck surfing the Net at 56kbps. The page loads slowly. Imagine how slowly it would load THIS time, with ten years worth of interview clips and images. So we've decided to give our 56kbps friends a much deserved break and forego images, except for the title at the top. It's still going to take a while to load, believe me.

Russian composer particularly known for his 15 symphonies (1925–1971). He also wrote chamber music, concertos, operas, and ballets. Encyclopedia Shostakovich, Dmitri dyÄmē trē shŏstŏk´ vÄch ) , 1906–75, Russian composer, b. St. Petersburg. Shostakovich studied at the Leningrad Conservatory (1919–25). The early success of his First Symphony (1925) was confirmed by positive public reaction to two satirical works of 1930—an opera, The Nose (Leningrad; from a tale by Gogol ), and a ballet, The Golden Age. Shostakovich sought Soviet approval and survived the changing tides of opinion. Severely castigated after Stalin saw a 1936 production of his popular opera Lady Macbeth of the Mzensk District (1934), he was restored to favor with his powerful yet ironic Fifth Symphony (1937). From then on he concentrated on symphonic compositions (in all, he wrote 15 symphonies) and, during the World War II, on heroic cantatas. Influenced by Mahler in his monumental symphonies, many of which include choral portions, Shostakovich was basically a Russian nationalist composer whose work represented traditional classical forms and generally remained accessibly tonal. Nonethless, his tart harmonics and musical portrayal of pain and turmoil are distinctly 20th cent. in tone. His outstanding works include 15 string quartets, a piano concerto (1933), the Piano Quintet (1940), the Eighth Symphony (1943), 24 Preludes and Fugues for Piano (1951), and the 13th Symphony, “Babi Yar” (1962).

    ALEXEI KOZLOV

Alexei Kozlov's ensemble The Arsenal laid the foundations of Russian jazz rock. The group was formed in 1973 and existed in the underground till 1976, when the ban of rock music and jazz rock was lifted and the band began to tour. In the following years they became widely known in the Soviet Union and abroad. The group gave its farewell concert in spring 1998. Boheme Music catalogue contains 4 CDs of The Arsenal. Besides, the recording of Alexei Kozlov playing with the Shostakovich Quartet is currently being scheduled for release. ANATOLE GERASIMOV
Sax and flute player, composer and arranger, Anatole Gerasimov worked with Moscow's best jazz bands. In 1973 he emigrated to the U.S. where he first played for Duke Ellington's orchestra. After the orchestra had broken up, he played with the leading New York jazzmen and composed for the theatre and the cinema (for example, he wrote a song for 1983's blockbuster "Liquid Sky"). In the early 1990s he moved to Paris and in 1997 returned to Russia. He now successfully works in Moscow with his own band of young musicians. Boheme Music catalogue contains his latest recording made in Moscow. SLAVA GORSKY
Keyboard player Slava Gorsky was one of the creators of Russian jazz rock. For many years he worked with Alexei Kozlov in The Arsenal. In 1984 he formed The Quadro group which has become one of the most popular instrumental groups in Russia. In 1990s The Quadro has become harder and more perspicuous and its compositions more laconic. The style of Gorsky himself, nevertheless, remains highly individual and is easy to recognize. Boheme Music catalogue contains two of his albums with Quadro - a late 80s album reissue and a new one.
