LISZT Piano Pieces

by David Mulbury, FANFARE
>Un Sospiro; Liebeslied; Gnomenreigen; Hungarian Rhapsody 9
>This gifted young Bulgarian pianist has achieved distinguished performances in this very attractive program that should draw the attention of all Liszt devotees. The opening piece, which Liszt composed for his eldest daughter, Blandine, is given a remarkably evocative reading, more effective than any I have previously heard. Vlaeva's Dante Sonata ranks among the top recordings of this challenging work, which Affred Brendel calls Liszt's most Berliozian piano piece. I still favor Mocsari's performance (Hungaroton) for its excitement, but Vlaeva shrouds it with more atmosphere.

This extraordinary pianist and composer clearly enjoys the challenge and freedom of playing jazz in numerous formats. Her 9th and most recent Blue Note recording joins her with the Danish Radio Big Band where Rosnes mines the experience gained during her impressive tenures with both the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Coming to NYC in 1986 on a grant from the Canada Council of the Arts, she was soon tapped for a series of high profile gigs with jazz masters Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and others. 15 Questions to Nadejda Vlaeva
While many talents choose to aim for the spectacular, Nadejada has built her career sensibly and steadily. After graduating in her home Bulgaria, she moved over to the Netherlands, working hard on her technique in various masterclasses. 1999 saw her crossing the Atlantic for a short period of study with Ruth Laredo and she decided to stay in New York. Over the last few years she has released a string of well received albums and contributed to the soundtrack of Allan Miller's "In Search of Cezanne" in 2002. It won't be the last we'll hear of Nadejda, as she has become a regular guest at radio and TV productions.

LAB 7025 "Unconstrained by speculations about what Bach might have wanted, or by concerns about what performers in Bach's time might have made of this music, or what Bach's keyboard instruments might have sounded like, Martins gives us Bach through a modern filter, but a filter applied unconsciously and without artifice. This is 21st century Bach, but it's a natural product of Martins's feelings and experience, not a deliberately manufactured package."

"Sylvia Anders is a consistently compelling, protean, sensuously and satirically powerful interpreter of both the words and the sinuous musical lines. She is a German actress but, singing in English, is doubly idiomatic. Because the songs are so skillfully theatrical, they transcend their grim topical origins - especially when sung, as here, with such voracious mockery. A remarkable album." - Nat Hentoff, The Progressive
