In fact, I find her playing more musical, exciting, and compelling than the great Argerich. And I don't mean the "young" Argerich. I mean the one playing today. Okay. I said it and feel better for it. Anyway, I played these recordings for four or five people who know music and asked them to guess who it was. Two of them said it sounded like Evgeny Kissin (one said Kissin after he's loosened up a bit). One guessed it was Argerich in her youth, and one mistook it for Howard Shelley. Another suggested Michael Pletnev. Not bad. All of them said that they couldn't remember a piano so vivid and musical. Art Dudley, my revered editor, noticed its immediate freshness and "innocence." He asked, ironically, "Doesn't she know she's not supposed to play like that? She's a threat to the piano world!" The real technical stunners are Weber's "Rondo Brilliant" on Valentina and the Rossini-Ginzburg "Paraphrase on Figaro's Aria from The Barber of Seville" on Virtuosa Valentina! You'll find the same kind of clarifying brilliance in the most lucid performance of the Prokofiev Seventh I've heard in years, also on Virtuoso Valentina! I cannot remember a more exciting or original version (yes, I said original!) of one of the oldest pianistic warhorses, "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2" by Liszt, a piece my piano teacher used to quietly state just may be the most exciting ten minutes in Western music. Her Schubert-Liszt songs (six on two records) are definitive and can compare with Vladimir Viardo's performances, a pianist I normally think of as owning this music.

(Entertainment from 2005-01-21 Edition)
Ukrainian piano duo Valentina Lisitsa and Alexei Kuznetsoff brought down the house Tuesday night at their first performance during the Bermuda Festival.
Entertaining a 90 per cent full audience at City Hall, Lisitsa, who was striking, and her husband, Kuznetsoff came to the stage and took their places at their pianos that were joined at the hips. And then the romantic music began with Sonata in D major for Two Pianos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The Sonata was followed by four more pieces by Robert Schumann, Maurice Ravel, Sergei Rachmanioff and Franz Liszt.
With some appreciation for classical music, I enjoyed the performance, but it was my husband, a musician/teacher, who was blown away by the pianists.
He talked my ear off with how outstanding their piano runs and slides up and down the piano were. He said you could tell Lisitsa and Kuznetsoff had worked on their craft for years.
Lisitsa would play a melody and Kuznetsoff would play a counter melody, moving together musically and sounding as one. Other times Lisitsa would play a song in the piano’s lower register and Kuznetsoff would play in a higher register, but they would still sound as one.

See/Be Seen Pimpin' Ain't Easy Thur 5/1 The Faint offers a rousing set Omaha, Nebraska's the Faint has no qualms about eating worms and swallowing dirt for a good photo op. In fact its members don't have many qualms, period. Recently in Britain's Bizarre magazine, frontman Todd Baechle let his catsuit out of the bag, admitting his fascination for making love in furry animal costumes the fetish sweeping today's sexual underground. He prefers costumes over nipple clamps, which he says hardly get him off at all.The Faint's frenzied live show heavy on strobes and video head trips is as naked as its members' personalities. Sexual energy permeates their concerts, working up crowds with songs like "Sex Is Personal," "Casual Sex," and "Worked Up So Sexual." Kinky antics aside, the Faint's lo-fi rock and dark-dance combination (think Nine Inch Nails' well-adjusted nephew) are the reason quirky kids (and closet quirks) are reeling in their records. The once strictly coffeehouse indie-rockers, with the customary guitar/bass/drums setup, steered their style toward synth-pop madness during the late Nineties, when they upped the sonic ante with synthesizer pilot Jacob Thiele. Their past two albums introduced a new, electronically charged band just in time for the electro-pop revival currently peaking on the super-chic meter.
