Her performance was so emotionally sincere and authentic it eventually should be recorded." In the 1995/96 season, Valentina Lisitsa appeared with the Mostly Mozart Festival under Gerard Schwartz at Lincoln Center. Lisitsa and Kuznetsoff
"Duo Pianists"
Newspapers across the country proclaim the Ukrainian piano duo, Valentina Lisitsa and Alexei Kuznetsoff, as the most "exciting," "accomplished," and "uncommon" two-piano team in the world. During the 1996-97 season, the award-winning husband-wife duo participated in an important North American tour as soloists with the Orchestre National de France under the direction of Charles Dutoit, which included performances at New York's Lincoln Center, Boston, and Miami. Young, gifted, and flawless in their execution of a full repertoire of classical music, Lisitsa and Kuznetsoff create together what critics say is a "technically effortless, interpretively cohesive" experience for listeners. Now living in the U.S., Lisitsa and Kuznetsoff bring to Western Michigan a rare opportunity to see and hear duo-piano perfection. This concert is not available for broadcast.

Sermons Lisitsa, Valentina; Kuznetsoff, Alexei Lisitsa and Kuznetsoff make beautifully nuanced music with two pianos, raising the phenomenon of multiple pianos above gimmickry to artistry. When they met at the Kiev Conserv atory, they each had already won both national and international recognition in solo piano and chamber music competitions. When this Ukrainian piano duo exploded onto the American musical scene in their formal debut in Miami in 1991, their flawless ensemb le and unified musicianship captured the enthusiasm of audience and critics alike. Last year's appearance on The January Series was part of a 29-city tour. They are back this year by popular demand. Technical Services : Not Available for sale. None : Not Available for sale. Lisitsa and Kuznetsoff are doubly delightful By John Ardoin Music Critic of the Dallas Morning News A most unusual recording session took place in Miami daring the late summer of 1995. The Russian born and now Dallas-based duo-pianists Valentina Lisitsa and Alexei Kuznetsoff were asked by a Florida company, Audiofon Records, to make their first commercial disc. What happened over a period of three days was beyond anyone's expectations. As producer Julian Kreeger writes in the album notes, "As soon as they began to play I realized that something very special was happening. There was an electrifying energy and spontaneity throughout their playing and none of the reticence that is all too often found in recordings." What resulted was not a single CD, but four — two of two-piano music and two solo CDs featuring Ms. Lisitsa, the technical powerhouse of the pair. What made the sessions even more remarkable, however, was that Ms. Lisitsa's CDs have been issued with no edits. In fact, the covers of Virtuosa Valentina (72055) and Valentina (72056) boast "UNEDITED PERFORMANCES," a first, as far as I can remember, when It comes to studio recording*. Paired with this vivid trio of contemporary works are glittering performances of Chopin's Rondo. Op. 73, the demonic Don Juan Fantasy of Liszt, Debussy's littIe-played and miraculous Enblanc et noir and finally Leopold Godowsky's Infectious two-piano version of Weber's Invitation to the Dance. As this is less than half of the solo repertory Ms. Lisitsa and Mr. Kuznetsoff command, Audiofon has its work cut out for it.

Piano duo to perform in Chicago CHICAGO - The piano-duo of Valentina Lisitsa and Alexei Kuznetsoff, both former students at the Kyiv Conservatory who have been winning critical acclaim since coming to the United States in 1991, will appear in their third concert performance at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, on Sunday, November 19, at 2 p.m. The husband-and-wife piano duo made their United States debut in Chicago, securing the following response from the Chicago Tribune's music critic, John von Rhein: "... I cannot recall when I have heard a more exciting or more accomplished two-piano team. They have the colossal technique and temperament you associate with pianists of the Russian school; they also have virtually flawless ensemble, the kind most duos labor for years to achieve, if they are even so fortunate." Ms. Lisitsa and Mr. Kuznetsoff, while still students at the conservatory, decided to give up solo piano study and work as a two-piano team with Lumdilla Tsvierko in Kyiv. In 1990 they won first prize at the Ukrainian Chamber Music Competition. In 1991 the duo was awarded first prize in the Third International Murray Dranoff Two Piano Competition held in Miami. Shortly thereafter, the couple made their home in the United States as scholarship students of Alexander Toradze, head of the piano department at the University of Indiana in South Bend.

DATELINE NEW YORK: Holiday happenings in retrospect by Helen Smindak At the turn of the year, cultural events in the Ukrainian community dwindle down to a precious few as we go about celebrating one Christmas or the other (or both) and ringing in the new year with traditional "Malanka" festivities. Yet there still remains much to write about, for the pre-Christmas period of 2002 was well stocked with art exhibitions and musical events. Apart from the Ukrainian Institute of America's exhilarating "Renaisssance of Kyiv" events and an exciting Ukraine Day at the United Nations (see The Ukrainian Weekly of December 15 and January 5, respectively), December had many sugarplums to offer. Included among these were "A Royal Christmas," a touring show starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, and featuring principal dancers of the Kyiv Ballet and the Shumka Ukrainian dancers of Edmonton; a duo-piano recital by Kyiv-born Valentina Lisitsa and her husband, Alexei Kuznetsoff; a Symphony Space concert headlined by master bandurist Julian Kytasty and virtuoso pipa (Chinese lute) player Wu Man; and a gig by the wild Gogol Bordello ensemble at the Knitting Factory. Dovzhenko films took the spotlight for two weeks at the BAM Rose Cinemas in Brooklyn. Capturing interest in Manhattan were exhibits by artist Inka Essenhigh and photographer Joseph Sywenkyj.
