Läinud kontserdinädal möödus festivali “Eduard Tubin ja tema aeg” (8. – 19. VI) tähe all, ka alljärgnevalt vaadeldavad muusikaõhtud toimusid selle raames.
Tallinna raekojas esinesid 11. VI sopran Pille Lill ja pianist Marje Lohuaru, kavas Britteni, Sibeliuse, Tubina, Saare ja Richard Straussi laululooming.
piano -episoodides.

Concert Review Elena Firsova 50 th birthday concert. Royal Academy of Music, 5 March 2000. This was an extraordinary musical party. The Duke's Hall was packed for a concert introduced by Barry Gavin, who had made memorable TV films during 1990 about composers in Soviet Russia. The images of a large number of them eating, drinking and talking, crammed in the tiny kitchen of Elena Firsova and Dmitri Smirnov's small Moscow flat, are unforgettable, and a significant contribution to recent history. Both are now well-established composers in this country. Half (well, not quite) of London's leading musicians, and some impressive younger ones, took part in a three-hour retrospective of Elena's compositions. Alissa took part, with fellow-pupils from the Purcell School, in Frozen Time , a Schubert Ensemble commission for their Chamber Music 2000 project see review to create contemporary music for teenagers - its 'quasi-romantic material treated in a contemporary manner' wholly successful, and performed with complete assurance. Philip Firsov provided my illustration and sold his mother's scores during the intervals. Michael Vaiman (violin) with his brilliant pianist son, Daniel, gave the first performance of

Meladina Record This is an extraordinarily successful live recording of Elena Firsova's celebratory 50 th birthday concert, reviewed in detail by , March 2000, when I expressed the hope that some of the music might appear on CD. Russian Easter Weekend in London , 28-30 April, also reviewed by Patricia Rosario 's accounts of two groups of songs, and as soloist in a major Cantata to poignant poems by Mandelstam, are perhaps the high points; she is in perfect voice, captured by expert engineering at the Royal Academy of Music. Tim Mirfin (bass) impresses in two striking settings of poems by Oleg Prokofiev. Michael Vaiman, a distinguished Russian violinist, is partnered by his pianist son, Daniel, in the world premiere of Vernal Equinox Op. 94, commissioned for the occasion. Two great Russian cellists participate - Alexander Ivashkin and Karine Georgian. Richard Shaw accompanies Ivashkin in

LEONARD BERNSTEIN: AN AMERICAN LIFE, a groundbreaking eleven-part documentary series illuminating the life and work of musical titan Leonard Bernstein, will air on radio stations across the country and around the world beginning in October, 2004. The series of 60-minute programs is narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon and is being produced by Steve Rowland with Larry Abrams of CultureWorks exclusively for the WFMT Radio Network. Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) was the last classical musician of our time to be a household name; no one since has achieved the level of fame with the general public as Bernstein. Bernstein became an American icon not only because of his ability to conduct and compose, but also because of the power of his personality and his passion to communicate, through music, about life, love and the human condition. Youngsters (and adults) in the 1960s and beyond were the beneficiaries of Bernstein's intense music making and insightful commentary on his "Young People's Concerts." This upcoming radio event took six years to produce. It is, says producer Steve Rowland, "a story a profound and multi-layered story with many fascinating twists: the number and variety of people, places, ideas and artistic issues that Bernstein worked with, came into contact with, and ultimately affected is stunning. And on top of his extraordinary talents in music, as a composer, a conductor, a performer and educator, there was still more: He occupied a place in American culture as a voice of conscience, a voice for peace, a supporter of democracy in its broadest vision, and a force working to bring the world together through music and art. These 11-hours of radio tell a monumental story."

Exceptional CD recordings
by Roland Herrera, Jan 2001 I am going to list the most highly recommended recordings that I have ever come across. Out of 4000-5000 classical recordings (many LPs are now on CD ) I have only included the very best. Often a great musician will specialize in a particular composer or style, and here I list typical instances, only naming recordings which have become widely respected and regarded by musicians throughout the world. In other words, these are the best recordings available, and though other fine editions may exist, readers are well advised to seek out and order these gems before they disappear. So many recordings are made, nowadays, but "any" recording of a piece just will not do. There is a huge difference between one performance and another, and we are not just talking about DDD versus AAD ! Here is my recommendation for your listening enjoyment and experience. The list is especially important for young listeners and music students. Leave your mouse on the CD covers for extra information. A note about the sound WAV files that you can listen to : 20-30 second samples have been taken of some of the CDs mentioned. They have been highly compressed into MPEG Layer-3 16 kBit/s 16,000 Hz mono WAV files which can be played on
