He received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Michigan in 1979 and his Master of Music from the Julliard School in 1981. Mr. Biava has played with the Philadelphia Orchestra and has been principal cello of the Savannah Symphony, New Jersey Symphony, and five other orchestras. He regularly performs as soloist with the Columbus Symphony, the Bogota Symphony, and the Bogota Philharmonic. He is a frequent recitalist in North and South America and has performed in Italy and France. Mr. Biava is on the faculty the Youth Orchestra of the Americas at the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico. Mr. Biava was named "outstanding classical artist" at the Columbus Music Awards at the Newport Music Hall in 1995. He recently conducted and played the Haydn Cello Concerto in D with the Columbus Symphony at the Viva Vienna Festival and will be playing a recital tour on the East coast with his aunt, eminent Colombian pianist Blanca Uribe.

College Relations Directory Search Releases Top Uribe to present an afternoon of Chopin at Vassar, March 4 Pianist Blanca Uribe will present an afternoon of Chopin, including the 24 preludes, on Sunday, March 4, at 3 p.m. in the Skinner Recital Hall, Vassar College. The concert, sponsored by the Department of Music, is free and open to the public. Ms. Uribe, the George Sherman Dickinson Professor of Music at Vassar, will perform Chopin's Preludes for Piano, Op. 28 (1836-1839), among other works. Born in Bogota, Colombia, into a family of many generations of professional musicians, she studied in Vienna at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Art with Richard Hauser and in New York at the Juilliard School with Rosina Lhevinne and Martin Canin. A prizewinner at many international competitions, Uribe appeared recently as concerto soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philharmonia of London, the Residentie Orkest in the Hague, and the American Symphony. Her recordings include Richard Wilson's piano concerto with the Pro-Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston, conducted by Leon Botstein (CRI SD-618) as well as the "Iberia Suite" by Isaac Albeniz and the "Danzas Fantasticas" by Joaquin Turina. Uribe's many honors include the General Francisco de Paula Santander Medal, awarded for outstanding contribution to Colombian Culture, and the Order of Saint Charles, which she received in 1986 from the president of Colombia. Wilson was born in Cleveland, where he studied piano with Leonard Shure. Composers Bureau Richard Wilson Biography RICHARD WILSON is the composer of over seventy works in many genres, including opera. He has received such recognition as the Hinrichsen Award (from the American Academy /Institute of Arts and Letters), the Stoeger Prize (from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center), the Cleveland Arts Prize (from the Women's City Club of Cleveland), and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Recent Commissions have come from the Chicago String Quartet and the Koussevitsky Foundation. Monday, February 28, 2005 Academy d'Underrated: Robert Ashley February is the shortest month, mercifully, and I'm going to leave all of John Luther Adams' music up on Postclassic Radio for a few more days at least as compensation. But I hereby proclaim Robert Ashley Composer-of-the-Months for not only March but April as well - on account of, I'm sick and tired of having classical musicians and even composers respond, "Who's Robert Ashley?" "I've never heard his music, what's it like?" And so if you've never heard his music you're going to hear it this month, and if you have, you may revel in it to your heart's content. I'm starting with his operas Perfect Lives and Improvement: Don Leaves Linda in their entireties, the longest complete works I've posted to the station. I'll add other pieces as the months proceed. Ashley is the greatest and most innovative opera composer of the late 20th century, yet his work is so unconventional in genre and medium that the classical establishment has hardly bothered to become aware of it. In fact, for me there are four composers whose innovations could provide enough of a working foundation for a new musical language to supply my generation and another one or two afterward: Conlon Nancarrow for rhythm; La Monte Young (or alternatively, Ben Johnston) for pitch; Morton Feldman for texture and continuity; and Ashley for the relation of text to structure and music. In the work of those composers we have a new American musical revolution, for those who want to take advantage of it. It's no exaggeration to say that my creative life has been a halting attempt to integrate what I inherited from the four of them.
