The Pianist Additional resources can be found in the electronic press kit Chad Twedt began studying piano in Reno, Nevada at the age of six, studying with Kathie Krocak, Joan Houtz, Dr. Ronald Williams, and Dr. James Winn. Chad won the 1997 MTNA-Young Chang Collegiate Artist Piano Competition for the state of Nevada, and went on to take third place in the Southwest U.S. Divisionals. He also performed Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1 as guest soloist with a couple of Reno orchestras. Twedt’s past solo repertoire is well-rounded, and Chad particularly enjoys baroque and various styles of tonal contemporary music. Chad has mastered some of the most demanding solo repertoire, including Chopin’s Third Sonata, Alkan’s Le Festin d’Esope, Liebermann’s Gargoyles, Schubert’s “Wanderer” Fantasy, Beethoven’s “Appassionata” Sonata, and Stravinsky’s Three Movements from Petrushka, including Twedt’s own additions and changes to Petrushka, which made sections of the piece sound closer to its original orchestration but also made it much harder to play than it already is. All of these works were recorded live at Twedt’s collegiate undergraduate and graduate recitals, and these recordings are

January 30, 2004 Reno pianist and composer Chad Twedt has a lot of people telling him he's going places. University of Nevada, Reno music professor Dr. James Winn says Twedt is a composer to be reckoned with, and Twedt is on the short list of artists for a big East Coast event that he risks blowing if he tells you about it. Time will tell where this Reno artist is going. For now, he's living the life of the do-it-yourself independent artist, mounting and marketing a tour and teaching piano to about 40 students out of his home where he lives with his wife and 4-month-old daughter. His first CD of original compositions, "Ostinato," was released late this year, and he'll be performing his first concert of original material tonight at UNR's Nightingale Concert Hall, where he sold out the 600-seat theater in a student recital in 2001. Word of mouth helps bring the crowds, Twedt says. If it's not real interesting, they're not going to come back," he said in an interview. "I pick programs that are enjoyable and exciting to watch."

Chad Twedt (b. 1976) was classically trained from the age of six with private piano lessons, studying with Kathie Krocak, Joan Houtz, Dr. 1 as guest soloist with various Reno orchestras. He began composing seriously after completing his Masters in Piano Performance degree in 2001. Today, he tours and performs his own solo piano works.
Twedt's solo piano music not only arouses the emotions of the most casual listeners, it even stimulates the intellect of the most seasoned musicians. This unusually diverse appeal comes from his unique blend of classical background and his non-standard musical influences, extending to new age, rock and even techno music.
Twedt's music is unified by the "ostinato", which refers to any short melodic, harmonic or rhythmic pattern that is repeated for a significant duration of a composition. It is remarkable what musical variety is possible within a compositional technique that seems so limiting. The music from his Ostinato CD is powerful, structured, passionate and intelligently constructed.

Nevada Pianist at Winchester Center Sept. 17 Composer and solo pianist Chad Twedt will perform his own compositions in concert at Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 South McLeod Drive at 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 17. The concert is presented by Clark County Parks and Community Services. General admission is $12; students and seniors are $7. Advance tickets are available at Winchester. Raised and currently living in Reno, Twedt was classically trained for twenty years and began composing seriously in 2001 after graduating with his Masters degree in piano performance from the University of Nevada, Reno. Today, he balances touring and performing his own solo piano works with giving private piano lessons. Twedt's music is unified by the "ostinato," a short melodic, harmonic or rhythmic pattern that is repeated for a significant duration of a composition. The ostinato might seem to imply repetitive, mechanical background music, but Twedt’s compositions demonstrate great musical variety inside the forms their ostinatos create. The music from his CD, “Ostinato,” is passionate and demanding to play, yet structured, intelligently written and made accessible to any listener by the basic simplicity of the ostinato. Twedt's solo piano music not only arouses the emotions of the most casual listeners, but stimulates the intellect of the most seasoned musician. The unusually diverse appeal comes from Twedt’s unique blend of classical background and non-standard musical influences, extending to new age, alternative and even techno music. His web site, www.twedt.com, offers audio samples of his music.

WONDERFULLY talented pianist Chad Twedt will earn his master’s degree in piano performance at UNR’s commencement in May. But first, there is the matter of another recital by this young master of the keyboard. Ordinarily, a student musician in recital may draw an audience of about 40 people — and that includes family, too.
But Twedt is something else. His last recital drew close to 400 at Nightingale Hall. I wouldn’t be surprised if this rare young talent on Sunday fills all 612 seats at the concert Hall. For one thing, the 7 p.m. show and refreshments are free and the public is encouraged to attend. For another, the program features the music of Beethoven, Chopin, Scarlatti and Stravinsky.
Finally, there is Twedt, who began piano studies in Reno as a 6-year-old. He has had a succession of standout teachers, including, of course, the now-retired Ron Williams. For the last three years, his talents continued to flower under the mentorship of UNR professor James Winn.
Says Winn: “Chad is a wonderfully talented pianist, always getting around the keyboard beautifully.”
