Beethoven Symphony No. 7 , Dussek Piano Concerto in G minor , Reicha Overture in D major San Francisco Symphony, Michael Tilson Thomas, conductor; Jean-Yves Thibaudet, piano. Davies Symphony Hall, May 21, 2004 (HS) Every year San Francisco Symphony schedules a late-season festival of some sort. In years past it has focused on maverick American composers or Mahler. This year it's Beethoven, but with a twist. Instead of doing just the usual Beethoven chestnuts, music director Michael Tilson Thomas has plucked pieces by the composer's contemporaries to perform alongside them. With the highfalutin' title "Beethoven's Vienna: Scenes from a Musical Revolution," the fortnight, which climaxes in a semi-staged "Fidelio" next week, has had symposiums, a sonata recital by Anton Nel, and this weekend's uneasy juxtaposition of the Beethoven Symphony No. 7

by Jay Nordlinger D , Book II Thibaudet has an ample technique, in the sense of fingers, speed, accuracy. A couple of the preludes showed a real virtuosity. He also boasts a marvelous sense of rhythm, of dance. He did everything that Debussy requires, and Debussy, in this collection, requires a lot: diffidence, jazziness, a galaxy of unearthly sounds. This is an extremely tasteful pianist. He gives the impression of knowing a considerable amount about all sorts of things: art, philosophy, history. Some musicians are like this, and the quality is evident in their playing. After intermission, Thibaudet turned his attention to Ravel and his Miroirs . Thibaudet played this piece with conviction, and it is obviously one that inspires him a great deal. "Opus 1" MUSIC: Beethoven: beginning of Beethoven: played by Isaac Stern, Eugene Istomin and Leonard Rose [Sony Classical SM2K 64510, disc 1, track 20]
Welcome to Compact Discoveries . I'm your guide, Fred Flaxman. The music in the background is the beginning of the Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in E-flat, Opus 1, Number 1 by Ludwig van Beethoven. The performance is by Isaac Stern, violinist; Leonard Rose on cello and pianist Eugene Istomin. The reason I'm beginning this hour with this particular work is because it is Beethoven's opus one, and "Opus 1" is the theme for this program. The word "opus" is Latin for "work." It is used in English to indicate a literary or musical work or composition. Although you might talk about a book being the author's first opus, books are not given an opus number the way musical compositions are. Opus 1 usually indicates the composer's first published work, not the first work he composed. An author's first book is sometimes his best work or the book he is most known for. It is sometimes his or her only book. In the case of musical compositions, it is rare that the composer's first published work is his best or most well-known composition. And I can't think of any classical composer who wrote just one piece of music which was published and became famous - the musical equivalent of Margaret Mitchell's

SATIE: Piano Pieces Jean-Yves Thibaudet- Decca 289 470 290- 78:37 This recording is not merely one more tribute to the art of the Master of Arcueil. The fruit of a sensitive soul very much in sync with the lack of ornamentation and mordant irony of the Daumier of the music world, its intelligence enriches a discography that is already overflowing. One must first salute the relevance of a program in which reflections are mirrored, unlike the usual scholarly compilations that resemble mere catalogues. The unavoidable Gymnopédies are scattered like pearls between the cabaret-like verve of the waltz Je te veux and a Jack in the box that seems mounted on springs. Not only does Thibaudet avoid the trap of monotony, but he also introduces a new repertoire of hitherto unrecorded discoveries: the Cinq Grimaces pour le Songe , composed for the three Fratellini Clowns and subsequently arranged for piano by Milhaud; Angora Ox , completed by musicologist Johny Fritz; a 7 th Gnossienne that was never part of any collection; two movements of the Belle Excentrique , the manuscript of which was discovered in 1999, reveals Satie’s pedagogical preoccupations and his concern to "prepare children for the world of sounds of modern music". A sort of

conductor Traditional - Performance of Indian classical music on tabla We begin with one of Messiaen’s life-long influences, Indian classical music, followed by one of his own masterpieces. Turangalîla (tur-ang-ah-lee-la) means "love song and hymn of joy, time, movement, rhythm, life and death." Shimmering with orchestral color and character, this piece is nothing less than monumental – a true study in contrasts – mystery with ecstasy, brightness with darkness, explosive sound with passages of near inaudibility. July 17 Mozart - Concerto for Violin No. 3 in G major K. 216 Mahler - Symphony No. 9 in D major July 24 conductor Gershwin - Second Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra Gould - Fall River Legend (complete) Rising star Stewart Goodyear lends his jazzy touch to Gershwin's successor to Rhapsody in Blue: Second Rhapsody. Variations on "I Got Rhythm" is a charming orchestral version of Gershwin’s 1930s hit. Then, travel to Fall River, Massachusetts, and experience Morton Gould's retelling of the legendary Borden murders. Close your eyes and you may even hear Lizzie Borden swinging the axe.

CARNEGIE HALL PRESENTS Orchestre National de France Isaac Stern Auditorium Thursday, February 24th, 2005 at 8:00 PM Orchestre National de France
Kurt Masur, Music Director and Conductor Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Piano DEBUSSY Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra RAVEL Piano Concerto in G Major RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade
Encore: RIMSKY-KORSAKOV "Flight of the Bumblebee" French artists and programs are supported by The Florence Gould Foundation. Program Notes: by Bernard Jacobson
Major French composers, with the exception of Ravel perhaps Saint-Sa«ns, have not been much associated with the piano concerto genre. Ravel’s two concertos, the G-Major and the Concerto for Left Hand, certainly go far to making up for any deficiency, and it should be instructive to encounter, by way of program companion to the G-Major Concerto, the one work his compatriot Debussy produced in a related form. The evening’s feast of orchestral color then balances these abstract French works with a Russian symphonic suite that may well be called the sonic equivalent of the screen spectacular: Rimsky-Korsakov’s lavish tone poem Scheherazade
CLAUDE DEBUSSY Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra Debussy was born on August 22, 1862, in St. Germain-en-Laye, France, and died on March 25, 1918, in Paris. He began to compose the Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra in October 1889 and continued to work on it intermittently until 1896; it was first performed—after his death—on November 20, 1919, by Alfred Cortot at a concert of the Royal Philharmonic Society in London.

Ida Haendel
"How to haendel it?"
According to Celibidache the world's first violin virtuoso,
Ida Haendel is talking about philosophical aspects behind the artistic life. The child prodigy of the thirties is the ageless master of music in our time. Nothing can stop her.
In Rome we met the great conductor and significant
from a Russian father and a Polish mother, he came
as a young man to the USA where Leopold Stokowski
conducted his music. Later on he was assistant of
Dorati in Minneapolis and of Stokowski in Philadelphia,
as well as composer in residence of George Szell's
Cleveland Orchestra. He spoke with us about his
remarkable carreer, and he told us a lot of superb
anecdotes about the great people he met. He answered our questions about his compositions and their motivation and he told us why he doesn't want to take a permanent post. We followed him with our cameras during the rehearsals with the new founded Orchestra Sinfonica Giovanile di Roma playing Beethoven's Egmont Overture and Sibelius' First Symphony. Of course, we all had a wonderful time in the eternal city.
