Mumadgi is the word used in the Changana dialect of Mozambique, to define a Portuguese European. Wednesday, December 04, 2002 Now the singer, well, the singer's first language is most obviously not English. From the sound of it, she's doing it all phonetically. Nearly every word shows signs of a struggle. She blithely misses all those verbal cues native Englishers don't notice until they go wrong in a spectular fashion. Words are often accented in completely the wrong way, as if she's got no experience about what usually means what. She pronounces words apologetically, even go as far as wrecking the rhythm of a line to make sure all those hard consonants are nice and sharp: "...one, who keeps stearing arount..." and "WITH. My UuuZZzzuaaal flaairrr." I've been listening to this for weeks and I've assumed that Takase the one with the Japanese-sounding name was the singer. Ha ha ha, the joke's on me. She turns out to be the accompanying pianist. Maria João is the singer...and she's from Portugal, not Japan. Still sounds Japanese to me. She has a very girlish voice, and nearly every Japanese woman vocalist I've ever heard is girlish-sounding to some degree. (But I listen to a LOT of j-pop so what could I know?) Not Two OLES/MAHALL/TIBERIAN/OLES Contemporary Quartet Not Two MW 744-2 Using so-called classical themes as a basis for improvisation isn't a new idea. John Kirby's Sextet did so in the early 1940s and flautist Moe Koffman and the Modern Jazz Quartet got plenty of mileage out of re-interpreting Bach. But using these themes as more than a jumping off point for unconnected soloing had to wait until a group of musicians exists that is as comfortable working on the improv side of the fence as the legit side. It also helped when some contemporary composers got over their snobbish distaste for so-called jazz music. This sea change has been particularly evident in Europe, and that's one of the reasons this CD is so special. Two young Polish players, plus a slightly older German clarinetist and a Romanian pianist, take nine pieces by contemporary Polish composers and transform them using the techniques and freedom of improv. Most notably, they don't "jazz the classics", but metamorphose the existing notation into organically legitimate new pieces. Drummer Bartlomiej Brat Oles, who arranged all the tracks, also throws in a couple of his own tunes here that naturally fuse with the other sounds. Oles and his twin brother, bassist Marcin Oles, provide the Janus-headed hope for contemporary Polish jazz establishing itself as memorable and original. Not only have the two played with local heroes like saxists Mikolaj Trzaska and Adam Pieronczyk, but also with outsiders like American reedist David Murray, German bass clarinetist Theo Jörgensmann and the two foreigners featured here. "Brat", by the way doesn't mean what it seems to for English speakers; it means "brother" in Polish.

FMP Matchless VARIOUS Audiology - Total Music Meeting 2001 all VARIOUS Seventh of May 2001: Freedom of the city Matchless Keeping up with contemporary improvised European music has never been an easy task from North America. Heck, considering the combination of obscurity and disdain that greets most intelligent music on this continent, keeping up with local improvisers is difficult enough. That's why these two releases are particularly valuable. Not only do they provide a snapshot of what was happening on that Continent during 2001, but over the three CDs you can sample 18 different bands featuring both veteran explorers and tyro improv investigators. Furthermore, despite the EU and the euro, that body of water that separated Great Britain from the Continent still makes a difference. You'll hear how, as it has been for years, BritImprov is still a lot different than EuroImprov. One rational for this is that Seventh of May, recorded in London, centres on sound recorded by Matchless, the label associated with AMM and pure, almost limitless improv. Meanwhile Audiology was recorded in November 2001 in Berlin by the FMP label, which usually releases the sort of harsher, more unbending improv associated with Northern Europe. In truth, some of the most diffuse sounds on that disc come from IST, the one British band represented, if repeating the fact isn't trafficking in geographical stereotypes.
