Carles Santos (Vinaros, 1940) can be considered an integral artist who started his long career as a pianist, covering later many other disciplines like direction and composition. The sum of all these facets, in addition to accumulated experience and reflections in other artistic areas like movies or theater, take shape in his numerous scenic, musical, and plastic works, which have given him an international recognition due to the originality of his projects and the rigor of their realization. His career began in the Superior Conservatory of Music of Barcelona's Liceo, where he obtained awards that would later give him an opportunity to complete his education in Paris where he studied with such masters as Fevrier, Casadesus, Magda Tagliaferro, Margaret Long, and later with Harry Datymer in Switzerland. As a professional pianist, he started his career in 1961, playing a repertoire of Bartok, Schoenberg, and Webern. During the same years, he composed and played the musical part of Joan Brossa's Concert Irregular, premiered at Saint Paul de Vence, Barcelona, and New York to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Joan Miro. It was a musical theater play with script by Joan Brossa and was commissioned by the Maeght Foundation. In 1968, he received a March Foundation grant and moved to the United States, where he worked with many personalities of the musical avant-garde and met John Cage. During the seventies, while directing the Grup Instrumental Catala (GIC), founded by himself and Mestres Quadreny, he made his first piano recording that included works by John Cage, Anton Webern, and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

English EUDOXIA DE BARROS was born in Brazil, in the city of Sao Paulo, from a traditional Brazilian family. Her father, Joviniano de Barros, was from Piracicaba and her mother, Maria Antonietta de Campos Barros, from Braganca Paulista, two cities in the heartland of the State of Sao Paulo. Even though Eudoxia's parents were not professional musicians, they loved music in general and had great interest in the Brazilian culture. Since her childhood, Eudoxia was undoubtedly influenced by this environment, always cultivating a great love for her country but also showing her appreciation for the culture of other nations. From a very early age Eudoxia devoted special attention to the Brazilian composers embracing the mission of influencing the national artistic midst. She used to say: "Someday I will be able to hear our Brazilian music being played all over the world!" And today she can certainly verify that her dream is almost coming true. In 1984 Eudoxia established with her husband and other composers the Centre for the Brazilian Music (Centro de Musica Brasileira) , a non-profit organization that promotes concerts and competitions dedicated exclusively to the Brazilian music.

Concert Notes:
Tafelmusik performs at the Guelph Spring Festival on May 13. The Quinte Symphony performs on all-Beethoven program including the Pastoral Symphony on May 28 in Belleville. (see Further Afield listings.) The Toronto Philharmonia includes the Pastoral Symphony on its May 19 program at the George Weston Recital Hall. Ian Bostridge; Mitsuko Uchida EMI 5 57827 2 This collaboration comes as something of a surprise because Bostridge has done so well accompanied by Leif Ove Andsnes on at least four superlative Schubert recitals for EMI. Having said all this, I must say that I am a fan of this particular school of English tenors, which is so well represented by the almost white toned voices of Peter Pears and Mr. Bostridge.

Gerorg Solti / Erich Kleiberg Conciertos Daniel In 1908, in Berlin, Ernesto de Quesada founded the “Konzertdirektion H. Daniel”. This famous name (Daniel) has a very curious origin. When Ernesto founded this company he was only 22 years old, and being so young he decided to “invent” an imaginary partner…Herr Heinrich Daniel, who naturally was out of town every time someone requested to speak to him. Besides, Daniel was a very easy to remember name and is pronounced almost exactly in any language. Six years later on the verge of World War I, Mr. Ernesto moved to Madrid and established in this city his agency “Conciertos Daniel”. Hanging on the door you could see the plaque that read “H. Daniel Ympresario”.
He didn't leave behind the task of working in favor of music in Spain , where he created the Associations for Musical Culture in over fifty cities. This including small towns where people had never had the chance to listen to a music recital. And if that weren't enough, he gave each of them a tail piano, as a loan, without ever charging them for it. Due to the civil war in Spain this whole organization practically disappeared…and so did the pianos. During the years of the Civil War and the World War II, the activity of “Conciertos Daniel” was practically limited to Latin America , where he expanded through the entire continent. Working closely with Mr. Ernesto were his sons Alfonso in Buenos Aires , Enrique in Caracas and Ernesto Jr. in Mexico .

More Proust Sightings
O ne of those odd facts of life is that once you have become aware of something, the more frequently you find it in the world around you. Certainly, long before I became a Proust fanatic I would encounter references to Proust here and there, but now I find them with amazing frequency, or friends find them, sometimes in the most unexpected places, and pass them along. So I 've decided to run a regular feature for each issue, and invite all of you to send your Proust sightings for inclusion.
I've had a stack piling up for many months, and it's been interesting to see where the references are coming from. Vanity Fair, as discussed in the last issue, has mentioned Proust every single month since July of 1993, in the context of their celebrity interviews based on the Proust Questionnaire; it no doubt holds the record for mentioning him more often than any of the major circulation publications, at least in the last few years. Running a close second, I believe, is The New Yorker, in which we've found the following references.
The next month, in the November 27 issue, In "Cather and the Academy" by Joan Acocella, she writes "...like other marriages of realism and Symbolism in the early twentieth century (Proust's, for example) it worked beautifully."

Caramuru is the director of the Tagliaferro Foundation in San Paulo, which is in memory of famous Brazilian-French pianist Magda Tagliaferro. Jobim personified the subtle, yet exhilarating bossa nova music. He wrote his songs as pop tunes, in the same way that his predecessors and peers - Gershwin, Porter, Berlin and Rodgers - wrote their classics. Jobim's works were to be performed by and for people of musical persuasions. One of the keys of the composer's success in the U.S. was the fact that his songs, originally composed in Portuguese including
