Which is better? To love or to be loved?
Never one to be satisfied, I have always needed both. (Magda in her Memoirs)
Click here to see Magda 's autograph. My life has all been Love, in the widest sense of the word. Everything I have created within and around me has been created with Love.
Her life
M
After the Conservatoire, she followed her studies with Alfred Cortot, who, she once recalled in a TV interview in Brazil, showed her how to put her fantasy and imagination at her service when playing. She became a friend of the members of the famous Casals-Cortot-Thibaud trio and used to play tennis with them, accompanied Casals and Thibaud in concerts, played under Cortot's baton.
Besides working as a soloist, Magda Tagliaferro had always a strong career in chamber music. The most powerful influence was violinist Jules Boucherit; she also toured twice with Geoge Enescu.
Her youth in the flamboyant Paris was full of adventure: she recalled as being one of the first women drivers, of singing the part of Love in an open air production of Gluck's Orfeo. Among her recollections were walks with Ravel, always silent most of the time. She also met D'Indy, Poulenc, Milhaud.
Among her friends was pianist Artur Rubinstein; once, she told it in a TV interview and in her memoirs, while they danced in Spain, he said ftattering that he wondered why he had never thought of marrying her but, instantly, said that he knew the reason: they were too much alike!

Recommended Books, CD's and Videos
Here are some good Classical Music items that I have recently bought and liked. They are all available through the mail order services on the Net.
Books
  • The Art of the Piano (David Dubal) - Its performers, literature and recordings - performers are listed in alphabetical order; the second part is dedicated to composers, in alphabetical order as well. Sometimes performers like Pogorelich get more praise than they deserve, but the book is a good reference source for pianists and music lovers - Harvest Book - Book Stacks
  • The Callas Legacy (John Ardoin) - a guide to Callas's recordings, in chronological order; it includes both studio and live recordings and a brief analysis of each entry - Amadeus Press - Book Stacks
  • Evenings with Horowitz - A Personal Portrait (David Dubal) - a duel of egos (Horowitz's and Dubal's) during aproximately 3 1/2 years; very interesting subjects as piano techique, composers, pianists as well as urban violence help the reader in getting a picture of Horowitz the artist and human being. At the end Mr. Dubal included Horowitz's discography and the book begins with a short biography. Read and send your e-mail telling who had the bigger ego, Horowitz or Dubal - Schirmer Books - Book Stacks
  • 5000 Nights at the Opera (Sir Rudolph Bing) - narcissitic account, by the Met dictator during the 50's and 60's, of his regime at the Met - Amereon House -

12. Magda Tagliaferro
magda tagliaferro (18931986) entered the Paris Conservatory in Marmontel’s classin 1906 and She was the first pianist to record Mompou’s music.
http://pianistes.ifrance.com/magda.htm
Magda Tagliaferro HAHN: Concerto, Sonatina; SCHUMANN: Vienna Carnival, Romance 2 ; CHOPIN: Impromptu; ALBENIZ: Sevilla ; MOMPOU: La Rue, Le Guitariste et Le Vieux Cheval Jeune Fille au Jardin ; DEBUSSY : Jardin sous la Pluie Toccata Pearl 0157-79 :17 The Bewildered Nightingale Roi malgré lui . The sweetly ingenuous Rêverie is followed by a tempestuous and capricious finale, a kind of piano portrait of Magda Tagliaferro whose recording here displays all the brio and vitality for which she was known. Hahn’s Sonatina illustrates the tendency of his period toward what was called Neo-classicism, although the term "neo-Baroque" might be a more accurate description of this stylistic exercise, dedicated to Diémer. Its three movements share the form and character of the dance as well as of a suite. Tagliaferro draws the maximum from this lighthearted piece in C major in which the naïve chord progressions and self-evident scales in the last movement recall one of Marmontel’s witty remark: "The fingers are little horses returning all by themselves to the stable!" Vienna Carnival She plays Sevilla Goyescas Suburbis

13. HAHN: Le Rossignol Eperdu
It is not entirely surprising that a great pianist like Earl Wild should turnhis attention played by magda tagliaferro to whom the piece is dedicated.
http://pianistes.ifrance.com/hahn.htm
HAHN: Le Rossignol Eperdu Le bal de Béatrice and his operetta Ciboulette, sung by the very popular Yvonne Printemps. These works achieved mass appeal by responding to the popular taste of the time, but songs like and Si mes vers avaient des ailes soar with a timeless beauty that assures them a place at the pinnacle of vocal music. Clarity, distinction, articulation, lightness, spiritual elegance that leaves no room for vulgar sentimentality, all these qualities of his songs can be found in the 53 poems for piano that make up Le rossignol éperdu [The Bewildered Nightingale]. Pièces de clavecin en concert, Pièces Pittoresques Fêtes Lointaines but its spirit magnifies the quintessence of French sensibility, carefully traced throughout the four suites that compose the work. A musical love letter or intimate little encyclopedia filled with allusions and epigraphs, this work would best be read with score in hand (Heugel publisher): devotees of literature will be delighted to learn that Marcel Proust, Hahn’s alter ego, wrote about his friend, "All that I have accomplished is because of Reynaldo." Just as in Debussy’s Preludes, these epigraphs are also metaphors, hypallages and paradigms that can be interpreted ad libitum.

By the time she was seventeen, it was clear that Clélia needed to spread her wings and her parents decided that she should study abroad. She won a scholarship to London to study with the highly reputed, Maria Curcio, who was a former pupil of the pianist great, Arthur Schnabel. Clélia also studied with Christopher Elton at the Royal Academy of Music who encouraged Clélia to play new repertoire, whilst trying to "tame a little bit of her wild Latin American spirit". It was during these years that Clélia worked on her chamber music playing, studying harmony, counterpoint and conducting and she won several prizes including the coveted Recital Diploma. It was also when she met her future husband, Renato, who was also studying piano there. However, probably the greatest teacher of all was Mercês de Silva Telles, a Brazilian piano teacher who studied with Claudio Arrrau who she met after winning the Santander competition in 1987. Other awards have included winning top prizes at the Tunbridge Wells Piano Competition in Kent, the Paloma O'Shea Award in Santander and Pilar Bayona in Zaragoza. Although she returns home to Brazil two or three times a year, Clélia has made London her home. She married Renato in 1989 and although he no longer professionally plays piano, they often play duets together at various local concerts. Nowadays, more of his time is spent with their two children Raphael (8 years old) and Maria Clara (6 years old) watching their mother perform professionally throughout the U.K., including her recitals and concerto performances at the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall, St John's Smith Square and major music societies throughout the country. Overseas, Clélia has played concerts tours and recitals in Brazil, Argentina, Canada, France, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Venezuela, the former Yugoslavia, the Czech Republic and USA. In between such engagements, Clélia also regularly appears in radio and television broadcasts in several countries such as Brazil, Venezuela, France, Spain and the U.K. Recent engagements include a recital at the Wigmore Hall where she played the "world premiere" of Marlos Nobre's Sonata Breve, a tour in Sweden with the Vasteras Sinfonietta, the UK, a tour in Norway with the Kristiansand Chamber Orchestra, Portugal and in Brazil recitals and concerts with the Orquestra Petrobras Pro-Musica and Orquestra Sinfonica da Bahia.
Over the past few years, Clélia's unique mastery had been captured on disc. Her first CD with music by Villa-Lobos released by Meridian Records was received to great critical acclaim and has been broadcast in many countries, including the BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM in the U.K. She has also released the recording of Latin American Dances with the Swedish label Intim Musik as well as a disc of Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No.1 and Concerto for Violin and Piano with Joachim Gustafsson, which was released in December '99 and was chosen by Swedish Radio as the best recording of the Double Concerto in comparison with any other recordings of this work. Her new CD "The Waltz Album" has been well received by the critic and public alike. She will release another CD dedicated to Brazilian Piano Concertos with Lontano and Odaline de la Martinez on the Lorelt label in the New Year. Forthcoming recording projects include a CD with piano music by Lecuona.

Daniele (Alexandrovich) AMFITHEATROF
Composer - Conductor by John Steven Lasher DANIELE AMFITHEATROF was born in St Petersburg, Russia on 29th October 1901 into a family distinguished in pre-Soviet Russia in various fields of arts and culture. His father, Alexander V Amfitheatrof [1862-1938], was a noted historian and writer. His mother, Illaria (Sokolof), an accomplished singer and pianist, had studied privately with Rimsky-Korsakoff. The composer's early life was one of extreme hardship. In January 1902, at the age of three months, he was removed to Siberia, where his father was imprisoned for publishing anti-Czarist articles. In 1904 the authorities returned the family to St Petersburg, following which they migrated to Italy. At the age of six he began music studies with his mother. In 1914 he commenced studies in composition under Ottorino Respighi in Rome, but returned with his family to Russia where his father was appointed advisor to Kerensky during the few months he was Prime Minister before the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. In spite of this social and political upheaval he managed formal instruction in harmony under Nicolas V Scherbatchef and Joseph Wihtol at the Petrograd Conservatory between 1916 and 1918. In 1921 he was permitted travel to Prague, Czechoslovakia to study counterpoint with Jaroslav Kricka.
