Sunday Wanted: Lazar Berman's version of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto Brian Micklethwait (London) I have loved Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto ever since I first heard it in my early teens, and I must have about twenty different CDs of it. My absolute favourite recorded performance of this piece is the CBS Lazar Berman/Claudio Abbado/London Symphony Orchestra version. Early reviewers complained about the "recording balance", but for me the piano's the thing and the piano is well to the front. (This was what the reviewers were complaining about.) And Berman plays it like a god. The fashion nowadays tends to be to play this piece, yes, quite noisily, but basically too gently and carefully, as if vacuum cleaning around sleeping kittens, a state of affairs I hold Sergei Rachmaninoff himself responsible for. He was a fabulous pianist, one of the twentieth century's best, but he was, I believe, shy about his own concertos, even when playing them. It was as if he couldn't face going for broke when performing these majestic works (Number Two is also a super-popular piece), because what if people then didn't like that? So, he would toss them off in a slightly detached albeit pianistically miraculous manner (described now as "aristocratic"), too quietly, too quickly, in a way that didn't expose his own ego too much. Take it or leave it, folks. No skin off my soul!

Biography
LG suggested I pull his Bio off the newly revised STYX website so here it is: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF LAWRENCE GOWAN (the unauthorized auto-biography)
They needed to use forceps to pull my rather large head from my poor mother's womb. (This however had little effect as my head has continued to grow daily none the less.)... Soon thereafter we left Scotland for the tropic of Canada.. At age 7, I wanted to join the Beatles but they weren't hiring so I had to do it without their help. At 19, I earned an ARCT in classical piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. The band Rhinegold occupied my next 5 years. After the inevitable ugly break-up, I went solo using but one name,"Gowan". I recorded some multi-platinum and gold records for CBS, and cultivated one of the first mullets on Muchmusic.(Canada's MTV) Big tours, Juno awards and rampant egos were sure to follow...and they did.
In the 90's new touring opportunities emerged. Playing solo, recording a French disc, compiling a Greatest Hits collection, a UN tour that allowed me to perform through Israel, Egypt, as well as war-torn Bosnia and touring England with The Stranglers made life very unpredictable and enjoyable. Also playing an original piece with the BBC Orchestra at Althrop for the opening of Princess Diana's memorial highlighted that period.

Artist: Gowan
Born: Glasgow, Scotland
Lawrence Gowan, born in Glasgow, Scotland, has been playing in and around the Toronto music scene since the early 1970's. He's a classically trained pianist from the Royal Conservatory Of Music and a devout Progressive Rock fan.
In 1976 he formed Rhinegold with fellow school mates Daniel Bourne (drums/vocals) and brother Pat Bourke (guitar/keyboards/vocals). Larry fronted this power trio as keyboardist and vocalist amidst his theatric story telling and acrobatics. Larry regularly danced on top of his baby grand piano and pranced about the stage like a wildman on fire.
Rhinegold's songs were molded with the same progressive rock substance of Genesis, Supertramp, and Queen - maintaining their melodic sense without abandoning the pretense of good storytelling like other Prog Rock icons like the Moody Blues, ELP and Yes. The Beatles were also a heavy influence and the band often incorporated their songs, as well as those by Genesis and Supertramp, into their set of otherwise all original material. Rhinegold's originality stemmed from their ability to weave a mythical story live and hold the audience's interest not only with rock solid performances and professionalism, but with Gowan's charisma as a frontman.
