Sylvia Alajaji "Diasporic Communities and Negotiated Identities: Alan Hovhaness's Recovery of the Armenian Folk Music Idiom"
In 1915 the Ottoman Turkish government ordered the deliberate expulsion of Armenians living in the eastern portion of present-day Turkey. Any culture that undergoes such a cataclysmic event faces not only the process of recovering from its horrors, but also that of retaining, re-discovering, or reforming an identity that would serve to unify them again.
Music can often be the glue that binds after massive losses and deportations. For diasporic communities, music becomes a site for the negotiation of multiple consciousnesses, or identities. It serves as a nexus of cross-references that at once symbolizes the past (the homeland and its associated myths and symbols), the present (displacement), and the reappropriation of these in the future (reconstructing the past and present in order to create meaning).
Sylvia Alajaji is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Musicology at the Eastman School of Music, where she has remained active as a performer, both as a soloist and a chamber musician, and as a member and teaching assistant of the school’s highly renowned Balinese Gamelan Ensemble. A Rhodes Scholarship finalist and member of Phi Beta Kappa, her research interests include Armenian music and identity and popular music culture and society. Her publications include a recent review of Armenian folk music in Armenian Forum. She is currently at work on her dissertation, Diasporic Communities and Negotiated Identities: Trauma, Recovery, and the Search for the Armenian Musical Voice. She is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Tulsa, where she received a degree in piano performance with a minor in chemistry.

To subscribe or unsubscribe at any time, go to http://oregonstate.edu/enews. Dear $subst('Recip.Fullname'): As Civil War weekend approaches, Beaver fans prepare for the big game when OSU takes on our time-honored in-state rival. A variety of activities are planned this week. And on game day, bring new unwrapped toys, books, clothes, art kits, teddy bears, or a donation check to support the Touchdowns for Toys campaign. You can help the Beavs touch the lives of local youth who need a hand. Making a difference in the quality of life for others is what our public research universities strive to do year-round. Off the football field OSU and UO are partnering with others on projects such as ONAMI to make a big impact on Oregon and the world. When the two universities work together to benefit Oregon, everyone wins. But on the playing field this Saturday, only one team can win.

Staatskapelle Dresden: Happy 75th, Bernard Haitink!

Dutch conductor Bernard Haitink routinely leads the great orchestras of the world: the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the London Symphony, the Boston Symphony, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. But the only one he regularly leads now is the venerable Dresden Staatskapelle in the former East Germany. Haitink conducted them all during his 75th birthday year, and saved Dresden for last. This concert takes you there. "I'm very fond of that Dresden orchestra. I am sad that it only came in my life so late, because I would have loved to have a longer spell with them."

Mabel Normand
(1912-17) The first great screen comedienne, Mabel Normand was also one of the first great screen casualties, dead at 36 from tuberculosis and high living. Normand was a model who posed for renowned turn-of-the-century illustrators like James M. "Uncle Sam Wants You" Flagg and Charles Dana Gibson. She switched to the movies and a friendship (and more) with comedy pioneer Mack Sennett, for whose Keystone production company she was the first of many pretty girl-next-door types to be the recipient of slapstick comedy. The festival showcases Normand's feature Mickey (1918), about a prospector's daughter who comes to New York to tame the local heels. Other shorts on view include some of the two-reelers Normand made with Fatty Arbuckle, including Fatty and Mable at the Fair Mabuse the Gambler Part I
(1922) Fritz Lang's silent adaptation of Norbert Jacques' serialized novel tells the tale of a super criminal of Bondian proportions. Mabuse the Gambler Part II

76th Hastings International Chess Congress
28 December 2000-5 January 2001
English Grandmaster Stuart Conquest headed a chain of English successes at the 76th Hastings International Chess Congress, sponsored by the Hastings Borough Council. Conquest, who used to live in Hastings before moving on to Bristol and then Spain, remained unbeaten throughout, scoring 6/9 and sharing first place with the young Indian GM Krishnan Sasikiran. Contrary to his normal "do-or-die" style, Conquest played very solidly, drawing many games early on before winning two vital games with Black. The first was in round 7 against the second seed Lubomir Ftacnik; this was followed by a dramatic last round victory over tailender Sergei Beshukov. Sasikiran has been a frequent visitor to our shores, having played in the British Championship on numerous occasions. He also remained unbeaten and led the tournament until Conquest caught him up in the final round. The invited Chinese player Zhang Zhong did not appear for the first round of the Premier. Stewart Reuben received a telephone call on Boxing Day from the Chinese Chess Federation, who told him that Zhang had been unable to obtain a British visa. His place was taken by Bischoff, who had been the highest rated player in the Challengers section.
