THE GAZETTE, THURSDAY, JULY,25, 1996 RUSSIAN PIANIST GRIGORY SOKOLOV OFFERS BIG TECHNIQUE BUT LITTLE RANGE OF EXPRESSION Arthur Kaptainis Joliette - Known in Montreal for its weekend blowouts at the Amphitheatre, the festival International de Lanaudière also presents weekday recitals and chamber concerts at small churches, some rural and quaint, some distinctly suburban. Grigory Sokolov, a 46 year old Russian pianist who still lives in St. Petersburg, returned on Tuesday night to one of the latter places of worship, the Eglise Notre-Dame-des-Prairies, on the outskirts of Joliette. A former teenage Tchaikovsky Competition winner, Sokolov is recognizably Russian by virtue of his huge technique, preference for rich colors and willingness to stretch a phrase to make a point. He began the recital with six Chopin Nocturnes, playing them so slowly and freely that the impression (particularly in a darkened hall) was almost of a continuous improvisation. Expressive ? Perhaps, but expression should have range, not just persistence. Chopin wrote these as individual pieces, and they were entiled to treatment as such. It is worth recalling tthat Sokolov did precisely the same thing last year to Schubert's six Moments Musicaux Op. 94. After the break the pianist shifted into heroic mode, playing Rachmaninoff's piano-bench favorite, the Prelude Op. 3 No. 2 in C Sharp Minor, followed by the preludes Op. 23 Nos 2 (B Flat Major), 3 (D Major) and 5 (G Minor).

Virtually the only exclusive piano series today are sponsored by universities or dedicated piano buffs, and these seem to be shrinking, since in the past ten years we have seen the demise of the Ambassador Auditorium series in Los Angeles and the Keyboard Artist Series in Carmel, California. The only three remaining west coast piano series that I know of are at Fresno State University, thanks to faculty pianist Andreas Wertz, at Portland State University, thanks to faculty pianist Harold Grey, and the one in San Jose called “Steinway the Bay Area Piano Series” founded by Sherman Clay. Otherwise, we observe traditional concert societies continuing to present subscription concert series that feature the usual variety of one pianist, one string player, one vocalist and a few group attractions, either dance or instrumental ensemble events. These series tend to be compromises since piano events draw larger ticket sales than vocal recitals or instrumental ensembles. However presenters stick to the “variety” formula since they are trying to appeal to the widest potential audience.
