The Recording:
Having recorded all eight of Huber's symphonies, Bo Hyttner's Sterling label turns its attention to the Huber concertos: "In the brief description of the music in his monograph on the composer from 1944, Huber's friend and biographer Edgar Refardt emphasized that these works were intended for a restricted circle of the composer's colleagues and pupils, who repeatedly stepped in as performers to assist with the dissemination of the concertos. 'Robert Freund, Otto Hegner, Rudolf Ganz and Ernst Levy have shown not just Switzerland but all the world what a pianist can achieve with a piano concerto by HansHuber. The most effective of the entire series remains the Third.' Even if Hans Huber's piano concertos to some extent owe their existence to specific occasions and friendships, they nevertheless extend of perception of this versatile and multi-faceted composer." (translation: Andrew Barnett) Once again this recording project was financially bolstered by the Czeslaw Marek Foundation for which we owe them thanks.

ARTHUR HINTON’S PIANO CONCERTO, Lambeth Orchestra, Christopher Fifield, March 2002 (LF) At St Luke’s, West Norwood on Saturday 23 March 2002, the Lambeth Orchestra and their conductor Christopher Fifield were joined by the American pianist Dan Franklin Smith for the revival of the four movement Piano Concerto in D minor by Arthur Hinton (1869-1941), which ran for around 31 minutes. Hinton’s birth and death dates give us the clue: he is the exact contemporary of Walford Davies, and although one encounters his name from time to time in connection with the musical scene at the beginning of the twentieth century, other than some piano miniatures played literally decades ago by Frank Laffitte, I cannot remember having heard anything by him before, though he has long been on my list of names to explore. The Piano Quintet, Violin Sonata and a programmatic piano suite A Summer Pilgrimage in the White Mountains (all published) look comparatively inexpensive and rewarding ways to explore further.

STERLING CDS-1056-2
Knowing Huber's symphonies, I received this disc with great expectations. There are comparatively few Swiss composers of whom Frank Martin is undoubtedly the finest but not in fashion due to the fickleness of the music public. Music lovers are unsteady, unfaithful and sometimes volatile and they move with convention, that is to say what is generally acceptable as fashionable at the time, and, as a consequence, composers suffer. Honegger was a fine Swiss composer (his work Joan of Arc at the Stake

Top International Institute for Young Musicians
Under the direction of KU alumnus Scott McBride Smith, the IIYM brings its prestigious Summer Music Academy to the University of Kansas campus each summer since 1993. The three-week intensive program features performances at the Lied Center and attracts talented piano and string students from around the globe to work with some of the most accomplished music educators in the country, including several of KU's own faculty members. Former IIYM students have received prizes in the most important international competitions, such as the Van Cliburn, the Chopin, the Gina Bachauer and the Music Teachers National Association.

On Feb. 7-9, the "International Conference on Gandhian Alternative to War and Terrorism" was held at Gandhi Bhavan, Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, India. Peace researchers and activists gathered from around the globe to examine this era of "new war" that has followed the terrorist attacks in the United States, and to search for a
means to build a world of peace and nonviolence. SGI President Ikeda sent a message to the conference that was read before the full assembly. Indian president Kocheril Raman Narayanan, vice president Krishna Kant, and former Indian president R. Venkataraman also sent messages in support of the event. The conference was sponsored by the International Center of Gandhian Studies and Research (Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti), in association with the G. Ramachandran Institute of Nonviolence and other organizations. In his message, President Ikeda introduced words of optimism and hope from Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. President Ikeda noted that these two champions of nonviolence always maintained an optimistic attitude because of their abiding faith in the limitless capacity of the power of the human spirit. Also, President Ikeda observed that the violent nature inherent in contemporary civilization stems from structural and cultural violence. The key to opening the door to a century of peace and nonviolence, he asserted, lies in the example of Gandhi's nonviolent struggle.

received his early musical training in Birmingham, Alabama, where he studied piano with Guy and Elizabeth Allen at the Birmingham College of Music. After moving to Kansas City, Missouri, he continued his training with Mary Newitt Dawson at the University of Kansas City. During this time he also studied with Carl Friedberg, one of the last students of Clara Schumann, and with Joanna Graudan at the Aspen Festival. A Victor Wilson Scholar at the Yale School of Music, he studied with Bruce Simonds, and twice won the Concerto Competition and was awarded the Lockwood Prize for the best piano recital. A Fulbright Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music followed, where he studied with Hilda Dederich, and in 1960 he attended the Casals Festival in Zermatt in 1960 as an accompanist. From 1961 until 1971 he studied with Frank Mannheimer , especially during his renowned series of summer sessions in Duluth, Minnesota. Mr. Adams has played on many important series throughout the USA, and during the 1970s made many tours for the United States Information Service in South America, Spain, Italy, and Central America. He made an extensive tour for Gioventu Musicale throughout Italy in 1976 and in 1978 he made his New York debut with an all-French program in Carnegie Recital Hall. His concerts in South Carolina over the past four decades now number in the hundreds, and he is especially well know as an interpreter of French piano music. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the French Piano Institute in Paris, and has documented the piano music of Debussy in a series of articles for the
