Markus Pawlik will perform tomorrow at the Leo Rich Theatre. By Ken Keuffel Jr. The Arizona Daily Star You've probably never heard of Markus Pawlik. But he's doing his best to change that - and against unbelievable odds. The German pianist, who tomorrow performs at the Leo Rich Theatre, belongs to an ever-increasing pool of talented recitalists for whom just surviving in music is an accomplishment. At 31, Pawlik faces an all-too-typical challenge: how to sustain a career beyond the initial momentum supplied by a couple of big competition wins. It is a daunting task. ``What do you do?'' The series opened last week and continues throughout the year with distinctive guest artists and faculty recitals. Esther Budiardjo Pianist Esther Budiardjo has received considerable acclaim from many of America's most respected music critics. Richard Dyer of The Boston Globe, who selected her Boston debut recital as "The Best of 1997" wrote, "Her playing summoned laughter and tears; made the mind work, the spirit soar." Of Ms. Budiardjo's New York debut performance at Lincoln Center, Harris Goldsmith of American Record Guide noted, "Her masterly account had a mature grandeur that placed it on the level of some of the greatest pianists in memory." In addition to winning First Prize at the 1996 William Kapell International Piano Competition in Maryland, she was awarded top prizes at the 1993 Stravinsky Awards International Piano Competition in Illinois and both the 1998 and the 2000 Palm Beach Invitational International Piano Competition in Florida. In recent years Ms. Budiardjo has been performing throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. Born in Jakarta, Indonesia, Ms. Budiardjo now resides in Vancouver, Canada. In December 2002 she received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. There she also received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees with Distinction in Performance as well as the Presidential Scholar Award. He made his solo debut at the age of 12 with the Christchurch Civic Orchestra, playing Mendelssohn's First Piano Concerto. He studied with Ernest Empson, a Godowsky pupil and later at the University of Otago with Maurice Till, who had been a student of Empson. He pursued his musical studies in the United Kingdom studying with Gordon Green. He had inspirational coachings with William Pleeth (cellist and teacher of Jacqueline Dupre) and with the Beaux Arts Trio. His Wigmore Hall debut was very well received and a successful career of solo and recital engagements in Europe, Scandinavia and North America followed. During his time in Europe, he recorded several times for the BBC and his recent release of piano music of Granados on the Meridian label received glowing reviews in the BBC music magazine. His playing was also featured in a Mozart Concerto on the popular New Zealand Symphony Orchestra/Concert FM release "Beauty Spot 2". Since his return to New Zealand in 1991, he has performed as a concerto soloist with all of the major orchestras, as an ensemble pianist with the New Zealand String Quartet and for Chamber Music New Zealand. He has done recitals for Radio New Zealand and enjoys a busy teaching schedule at the Massey University Conservatorium of Music in Wellington.

Scott Woolweaver, viola Gloria Chien Piano Pianist Gloria Chien has been praised by Richard Dyer of The Boston Globe for "a wondrously rich palette of colors, which she mixes with dashing bravado and with an uncanny precision of calibration…Chien's performance had it all, and it was fabulous." Ms. Chien has presented solo recitals at the Gardner Museum, Harvard Musical Association, the Monadnock Music Festival in New Hampshire, the Caramoor Festival in New York State, and the National Concert Hall in Taiwan. She has appeared as a featured soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Hall under the batons of Keith Lockhart and Thomas Dausgaard. In addition, she has been soloist with the New England Conservatory Honors Orchestra under Sergiu Comissiona, and the NEC Youth Philharmonic conducted by Benjamin Zander. Ms. Chien was invited to travel with the Massachusetts delegation and former Governor William Weld to perform several concerts in Chile.
