Reliquie, is conjoined with D960. The results are seldom less than absorbing though not always compelling. The earlier 1955 recording was recorded at a lower level and according to the notes this was the first of Schubert’s works that Serkin recorded (not true in a strict sense, as he’d recorded the Fantasia with his father-in-law Adolf Busch in 1931). In 1955 he sounds more lithe and correspondingly more acutely responsive than his later self, even in a torso such as this, binding the rhetoric that much more sharply.

Rudolf Serkin March 28 May 8 ) was an Austrian-American pianist. He was born in Cheb Bohemia to a Jewish Russian family. The family moved to Vienna when Rudolf was nine, where he studied piano with Richard Robert and composition with Joseph Marx. ( George Szell was also a pupil of Marx at the time.) Rudolf was hailed as a child prodigy, and he made his public debut with the Vienna Philharmonic at 12. He began a regular concert career in 1920. In 1935, he married Irene Busch, daughter of the conductor and violinist Adolf Busch , with whom he had often played since the beginning of his career. Rudolf also played with the Busch Quartet, which was made up of family members including his wife. Serkin made his first United States appearance at the Coolidge Festival in Washington, DC . The very next year, he launched his solo concert career with the New York Philharmonic under Arturo Toscanini . The critics raved, describing him as "an artist of unusual and impressive talents in possession of a crystalline technique, plenty of power, delicacy, and tone purity." In 1937, Serkin played his first New York recital at

Renowned pianist Peter Serkin to give tsunami benefit concert April 17

MIDDLEBURY, Vt.— In a surprise concert announcement today, Middlebury College Performing Arts Series Director Paul Nelson heralded the return of world-renowned American pianist Peter Serkin to the Middlebury stage. Serkin, who last performed here in 1997, will give a concert on Sunday, April 17, at 3 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Concert Hall. The concert program reflects his affinity for mixing contemporary and classical repertoire; works by Mozart and Bach will be featured alongside 20th-century compositions. The proceeds from all ticket sales will be donated to tsunami relief. Throughout Serkin’s career he has successfully conveyed the essence of five centuries of repertoire and his performances with symphony orchestras, recital appearances, chamber music collaborations and recordings are respected worldwide. Serkin’s rich musical heritage extends back several generations. His grandfather was violinist and composer Adolf Busch and his father pianist Rudolf Serkin. In 1958, at age 11, he entered the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 1959, Serkin made his Marlboro Music Festival and New York City debuts with conductor Alexander Schneider. Invitations to perform with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra soon followed. Serkin has since performed with the world’s major symphony orchestras with such eminent conductors as Seiji Ozawa, Pierre Boulez, Daniel Barenboim, Claudio Abbado, Simon Rattle, James Levine, Herbert Blomstedt and Christoph Eschenbach. Also a dedicated chamber musician, Serkin has collaborated with Pamela Frank, Yo-Yo Ma, and the Budapest, Guarneri and Orion string quartets.
