Additional 2003-2004 engagements included the world premiere of Peter Lieberson's Piano Quintet and the New York premiere of Alexander Goehr's Piano Quintet, both at the opening festival of Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall with pianist Peter Serkin. Additionally, the Quartet premiered Marc Neikrug's Piano Quintet with the composer in a US tour culminating at New York's Tisch Center for the Arts at the 92nd Street Y. In May 2000, the Quartet performed all 17 of Beethoven's string quartets in a series of free concerts at Alice Tully Hall, with additional outreach activities taking place in four boroughs of New York City. Presented in conjunction with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Beethoven 2000 supported six New York City community arts organizations in honor of their contribution to children. Lehrman AUFBAU 64:9 April 24, 1998 p. 13 Peter Serkin and Toru Takemitsu [with Seiji Ozawa] Two gifted musicians at the Boston Symphony by Leonard Lehrman 601 words A generation apart, they would seem nonetheless to be the perfect match: two fabulously gifted musicians, the composer Toru Takemitsu (1930-1966) and pianist Peter Serkin (b. 1947), both self-taught in their youth, who earned the approbation of the masters in their adolescence, and went on to glittering international careers. Takemitsu took to music at age 16, when pneumonia forced him into a convalescence soothed by long hours' listening to the radio, and he decided to become a composer. Two years later he began formal studies. In 1959, Igor Stravinsky called the Tokyo-born composer's 1957 Requiem a masterpiece. Seven years later, Takemitsu created a group called Orchestral Space, in collaboration with Seiji Ozawa, currently (and for the past 24 years) music director of the Boston Symphony. By the end of his life, Takemitsu had created over 90 film scores and dozens of concert works, including no fewer than 7 for Peter Serkin. The great classical pianist Rudolf Serkin (1903-1991), founder of the Marlboro Music Festival and unexcelled in Beethoven and Brahms, refused at first to teach his son Peter the piano. EMAIL CONTACT Art Archives Music Greenport Music Festival The Greenport Music Festival is a program of the Greenport Standing Committee on Arts and Culture. Its credo is that exposure to classical music is a vital part of any child's education. The Festival, in partnership with the Greenport Public Schools and Philadelphia. s renowned Curtis Institute of Music, has created a project whereby Greenport students interact with young professional musicians and hear them play. On April 1, 1999, a string quartet from the Curtis Institute traveled to Greenport to spend the day with one hundred fifth and sixth grade students, as well as with band and chorus members. In classroom visits, they demonstrated their instruments and discussed their lives as musicians. They also played for the students a program of works by Haydn, Halvorsen, and Mendelssohn. The musicians were Nathan Cole and Zack DePue, violin, Jessica Thompson, viola, and Priscilla Eunyoung Lee, cello. During the 1999-2000 academic year, Curtis students provided two events for the school and the community. On November 10, 1999, due pianists Sonia Chan and Akiko Tominaga visited the school to discuss the music they would be performing, and to answer questions about music and about their lives as musicians. They played two concerts for the students and later a free concert for the community, two Mozart Four-hand Sonatas, and, in the public concert, the C-major Sonata K. 521. These performances were held at the Floyd Memorial Library, marking the first use of the Model B grand piano for the music-in-the-schools program.

Sherman "Most current Brahms performances," complains the pianist Stephen Kovacevich, "suggest a comfortable, overweight bank manager reluctantly refusing an overdraft." Many performers, for example, wallow in the First Sonata's opening movement, playing it much more slowly than the "Vivace non troppo" marking suggests. By contrast, Pamela Frank and Peter Serkin find a dancing lilt within the movement's lyricism, playing it faster than anyone else. Their tempo pays off particularly in the second thematic group, which sounds rhapsodic. In general, Frank and Serkin know how to shape a movement, holding back in one place so as to build something more passionate later. Bank-manager Brahmsians often ignore the composer's articulation marks, favoring an all-purpose legato. Frank and Serkin vary their articulation more. Sometimes this takes getting used to, as in the opening of the First Sonata. Ms. Frank whispers the first few notes at "half voice" as Brahms indicates; and she notices that Brahms wants the violin's second note to be detached from the first. If you learned this sonata from hearing one of the many violinists who sustain both notes fully, as if they were pouring out a thick chocolate sauce, the new recording may not sound right.
