World-renowned concert pianist Peter Serkin will offer a solo recital at the State University of New York at Fredonia on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 8 p.m. as part of the public unveiling of the School of Music's new multimillion-dollar recital hall Ticket packages for the Peter Serkin solo recital, including dinner, reception and overnight options, are now available. A portion of the proceeds from the concert will be used to fund scholarship programs within the Fredonia School of Music "The opening of the recital hall is a major event," said Dr. Karl Boelter, director of the Fredonia School of Music. "The recital hall is the kind of performance facility that has been needed, desired and anticipated for more than 15 years. The size, the quality, the beauty and the acoustics of the hall will be meaningful for the campus, the community and especially for the students who are preparing for their professional careers. MIDDLEBURY, Vt.— In a surprise concert announcement today, Middlebury College Performing Arts Series Director Paul Nelson heralded the return of world-renowned American pianist Peter Serkin to the Middlebury stage. Serkin, who last performed here in 1997, will give a concert on Sunday, April 17, at 3 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Concert Hall. The concert program reflects his affinity for mixing contemporary and classical repertoire; works by Mozart and Bach will be featured alongside 20th-century compositions. The proceeds from all ticket sales will be donated to tsunami relief. Throughout Serkin’s career he has successfully conveyed the essence of five centuries of repertoire and his performances with symphony orchestras, recital appearances, chamber music collaborations and recordings are respected worldwide. Serkin’s rich musical heritage extends back several generations. His grandfather was violinist and composer Adolf Busch and his father pianist Rudolf Serkin. In 1958, at age 11, he entered the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 1959, Serkin made his Marlboro Music Festival and New York City debuts with conductor Alexander Schneider. Invitations to perform with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra soon followed. Serkin has since performed with the world’s major symphony orchestras with such eminent conductors as Seiji Ozawa, Pierre Boulez, Daniel Barenboim, Claudio Abbado, Simon Rattle, James Levine, Herbert Blomstedt and Christoph Eschenbach. Composer Peter Lieberson's work first came to national attention in 1983, with the premiere of his Piano Concerto , composed for Peter Serkin and commissioned by Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra for their centennial. Andrew Porter wrote in The New Yorker that it was a "major addition to the modern concerto repertory," and the subsequent recording of the work won Opus Magazine 's Contemporary Music Award for 1985. Following its success, Lieberson was again commissioned by Ozawa and the BSO, which resulted in Drala (1986), "a short symphony but a profound one and, in many of its pages, a profoundly beautiful one," according to the Boston Globe Drala has been performed recently by the Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Toronto Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the London Sinfonietta. Lieberson's newest orchestral work is Neruda Songs , a setting of five sonnets by Pablo Neruda for mezzo-soprano and orchestra, commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony for Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. The world premiere takes place in Los Angeles in May, followed by a "Composers' Choice" concert with the Los Angeles New Music Group conducted by Lieberson, and featuring his Horn Concerto, Free and Easy Wanderer , the Piano Quintet and Rilke Songs . Also this season the New World Symphony performs Drala ; the New York Philharmonic with soloist Peter Serkin and James Conlon conducting present

Artists Catalogue/Shop Tours ... About ECM An outstanding and unusual recording, marking the ECM New Series débuts of two very exceptional musicians. András Schiff and Peter Serkin, friends for many years, have not often been duo partners, although they have made music together in other contexts (recent instances including performances of Bach's Double and Triple Concertos for Keyboard with the Camerata Bern.) In 1997, however, they undertook a brief North American tour together, preparing the material that they would record at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York of November of that year. A concert at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art brought forth a review from Bernard Holland in the New York Times, sub-headed "Proof that piano duos can be saved from marginality", suggesting it is precisely the strongly contrasting styles of these players - "poetic" is an adjective most often applied to Schiff's touch, while Serkin is frequently described as "austere" - that elevates their interpretations far above the congruent congeniality we associate with "the piano duo" as a fixed entity. In his liner notes for "Music for Two Pianos", Klaus Schweizer looks at inter-relationships between the pieces, viewing Schiff and Serkin's concise programme of music by Mozart, Reger and Busoni as "a kind of Kunst der Fuge" in itself, "a three-fold attempt to direct the gaze, from changing points of view, at Bach, arguably the most inventive 'fugue maker' of all times. .. And the Mozart sonata, following the three fugue works, offers a new hearing experience...it radiates an overwhelming lightness and grace, temperament and esprit."
