Cage takes sixty-four hexagrams from the I Ching as a generational force for the musical parameters of pitch, duration, interval/aggregate and volume to generate four ‘Books’. Music of Changes was the first work Cage wrote for the pianist David Tudor. At the time Cage was in regular contact with Pierre Boulez, and it is therefore possible Cage wanted to write his own major piano work to complement the works being produced by the serialists (Tudor had only recently given the American premiere of Boulez’ Second Piano Sonata).

These have included classic masters like Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Beethoven, though we shouldn't forget the French ones, too, like Rameau, and in the 19th and 20th centuries, there have of course been other classic masters who've composed for it, and sometimes had big careers playing their works, like Liszt, Brahms, Debussy, Faure, Rachmaninoff, and Bartok. In our own time Terry Riley has made a mini career of playing his keyboard music in just intonation, while Philip Glass has pursued his own equally unique personal course by playing his equal temperament piano/keyboard works, which though not voluminous, occupy a central place in his output. secco , its suspensions floating like passion viewed from afar. The Etudes are also arranged as a contrasting yet developing set the first one being moderate, the last fast, and these enclose three other sections roughly slow, fast; slow, slow; fast, slow; slow, fast. Glass' playing, though far from virtuosic, conveys each piece's singularity and point. His Baldwin is very responsive, his sound entirely his.

steffen schleiermacher sent me this comment, which he received from the New have been nearly unplayable by a single pianist due to extremity of range.

    Encounter
Category: Musical composition Dated: Instrumentation: Piano Duration: Premiere and performer(s): May 12, 1946 Dedicated to: Choreography: Merce Cunningham: The Encounter Published: Manuscript: Score (holograph, signed, in pencil - 10 p.) in New York Public Library
Unfinished work. It contains 4 movements, the last of which is incomplete. Steffen Schleiermacher sent me this comment, which he received from the New York Public Library:
"The title page of Encounter indicates (in parentheses) that it is a suite for piano . Other writing in Cage's hand indicates some relationship to the "Prelude for Six Instruments" (i.e. Prelude in A minor for six instruments). Additional notations on the title page suggest that Encounter might have been the last of a group of six other works.
The first work of Enconter (numbered "I") is two pages long and is written in pencil. The first page continues on to the verso of the title page (i.e. in reverse order of pages). The music contains numerous erasures indicating an earlier state of the work which contained much a thicker density of music. The density and variety of these annotations suggests that Cage might have thought to rework the piece for an ensemble, as the resulting music resembles a short score of a chamber work. There are a few measures where the original music would have been nearly unplayable by a single pianist due to extremity of range.
The second work (numbered "II") contains only a few erasures, but ones that are similar in that they seem to be indicating additional music, possibly played by other instruments. In contrast to number "I," this second piece is of much lighter density of music.

Are we improvising? Good question. I think not. These scores are a wealth of wonderful graphic images which beg to be heard. During the process of studying them, I found myself aligning sounds with images, performance gestures with graphic gestures, shapes (graphic) with shapes (musical) with shapes (physical). As Eberhard, Iven and I worked together, elements which could be attributed to the realm of improvisation became fixed at the macro level while remaining significantly less so at the micro level.

    Neither
Neither has been identified by some as an opera (it was commissioned by the Rome Opera) but it makes use of none of the conventions of traditional opera. There is no story, no mise-en-scene. The intensity results from emotional/aesthetic tension, not plot manipulation or character confrontation. The music does not attempt to accompany or depict the text in the usual fashion; instead Feldman has created a kind of musical equivalent to the environment that Beckett's words suggest, invoking the same atmosphere and sharing a similar vision.

Japan Piano 1996 "Ink on rice paper is music," wrote Robert Motherwell, who found many self-defining parallels in Japanese philosophy and art, among them the suggestion that the transformational qualities of art derive from the process the artist undergoes during the creative act, which originates in his innermost nature and adapts itself according to the relationship one has with one's material. Motherwell felt that a painting's content is dependent not upon its subject matter but its "rhythms and proportions," and that "...if the amounts...are right, they will have condensed into quality, into feeling."

The composer of one of them, Anders Koppel, reports being captivated by her playing of his work at an International Percussion Competition, and not only by her flawless technique but also her Charleston dance steps footwork during an appropriate section of the concerto. This performer sounds like another Evelyn Glennie. The Kopetzki concerto is actually dedicated to Katarzyna and provides two cadenzas to allow her to do her stuff. Both of these concertos have a playful and joyous air about them. Keiko Abe is another female marimbist who has made several recordings and in her works seeks to expand the musical possibilities of the instrument. This CD provides an unusual and first-class musical experience.

    Going to Hell!
Teatro Lirico’s firebreathing Don Giovanni ; plus Steffen Schleiermacher at NEC
BY LLOYD SCHWARTZ There was a time when Mozart’s Don Giovanni was the automatic response to the question: "What’s the greatest opera?" Maybe these days we have less tolerance for the central character, the aristocratic libertine, seducer, and victimizer of women, who feels no remorse for his betrayals or even for killing someone in a duel. It may be harder these days to see his standing up to the forces of morality as a kind of heroism (the male counterpart of Bizet’s Carmen, whose identity lies in her sexual freedom and who would rather die than yield her power). Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro may be more to contemporary tastes: the triumph of the underclass over the tyranny of the rich, a character with whom we can more closely identify. Or
