News
Artists Catalogue/Shop Tours ... About ECM “Beethoven’s five sonatas for piano and cello show in a nutshell the same evolution that the 32 piano sonatas show,” said András Schiff recently, in an American radio interview. “You have this wonderful young lion Beethoven in the opus 5 sonatas, you have the opus 69, the A major, which stands in the middle of his life, and then you have these wonderful two works, opus 102, which are at the gates of the late style, the last phase. And these are in a way experimental works, but fully crystallized.”
András Schiff’s decision to record Beethoven’s complete works for piano and cello is characteristic for a musician who has set himself the challenge of undertaking many complete cycles of works in his concert life. Recitals and special cycles including the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann and Bartók have long been an important part of his activities. A special focus in 2004, for instance, has been performance of the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas in chronological order. For Schiff, this is a matter of “curiosity, and trying to see connections, to see the development and evolution of a composer in a certain genre. It’s a learning process I would like to share with my listeners.”
The works for piano and cello are realized here with Miklós Perényi. “There is a great affinity between us, coming from the same country and the same city, Budapest.” Five years his senior, Perényi’s status as “a wunderkind, a child prodigy” was a local legend when Schiff was growing up. Subsequently, Perényi was to become the favourite pupil of Pablo Casals; for András Schiff, his countryman is “the greatest cellist alive today”. Pianist and cellist have been chamber music partners for a long time now, intensifying their musical relationship during Schiff’s decade-long directorship of the Musiktage Mondsee and playing concerts together around the world.

Juliane Banse and András Schiff
SONGS OF DEBUSSY AND MOZART
(ECM)
This release is, to my knowledge, the first collaboration between soprano Banse and pianist Schiff, and it’s superb. Debussy’s songs aren’t nearly as well known as his orchestral works; hearing them, though, you wonder why. Many are suffused with the same sense of mystery and dream that inform the Nocturnes and the opera . Which is perfect for the Symbolist poetry of which he’s so fond: his response is to the sound and the atmosphere of the poems rather than to the words themselves. And Banse is just about perfect for these songs, her voice agile and pure as water, almost without vibrato. Schiff for his part is sensitive not only to Debussy’s crystalline harmonies but also to the intricacies of his piano writing, and he maintains an ideal balance with Banse. Mozart’s similarly neglected songs may seem an unlikely pairing, but in the event both composers gain from the juxtaposition. You hear in the Mozart not just the familiar elegance but also unexpected diversions and journeys away from and back to the home key. And Debussy’s phrasing sounds natural and unaffected next to Mozart’s similarly effortless grace. Both recitalists are equally compelling in the Mozart songs. This is wonderfully spontaneous musicmaking. Texts and translations are available at ECM’s Web site

András Schiff and Peter Serkin
Music For Two Pianos
(ECM New Series) by Sarah Zupko
Pianists András Schiff and Peter Serkin are both well-known for their devotion to the fugue and Bach in particular. Both master interpreters of the "Goldberg Variations," they nonetheless have widely divergent styles with the Hungarian Schiff noted for his cerebral approach that stresses sound clarity over beauty of tone and American-born Serkin (the son of legendary pianist Rudolf Serkin) acclaimed for his poetic touch. So, it's of major musical interest to find these two prodigious talents combining their efforts on the new collection of pieces for two pianos, Music for Two Pianos It would be too obvious to approach the fugue with Bach, so instead they tackle pieces by Mozart and two twentieth century composers, Max Reger and Ferruccio Busoni. Rather than presenting two like musical minds whose sound blends seamlessly together, Music For Two Pianos is fascinating precisely because of the "debate" between the differing musical approaches that Schiff and Serkin employ. It makes for a wonderful dramatic tension, all the more palatable as a result of the contrapuntal textures of the fugue that weave in and out. This wouldn't necessarily work with a composer like Beethoven, where dominant melodies are supported by a harmonic structure that rarely intervenes or interferes with the primary melody. Schiff and Serkin's playing is particularly inspired on the often-overlooked on Reger's "Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Beethoven." Reger composed similar pieces on themes by Bach and Mozart that are played more frequently, so kudos to Schiff and Serkin for resurrecting this mesmerizing piece.
