Full Review Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982) was a pianist who had a gigantic repertory that stretched from Bach to Villa-Lobos and embraced almost every composer in between to a greater or lesser degree. Although he is best known for his interpretations of Chopin and Brahms, Rubinstein could also give delightful performances of the music of Beethoven and Schubert. His own ideas may have been unabashedly Romantic and full of ideas that we would dismiss outright today, but his performances are still among some of the best that these works have received in recent memory. The second movement, which is the heart of this great work, was a piece that Rubinstein felt a profound affinity with. Around the time that he made this recording, he once commented to a friend that the movement reminded him of death and what it felt like. His own interpretation of this beautiful movement is intense and rapt. When I sat down and listened to it with the score on my lap, I felt that Rubinstein had transcended the written page and had created something that was unique his own. Just the opening of this movement is something that needs to be heard over and over again to be fully appreciated. It was that good.

Full Review The sorrowful melody in the second movement of this passionate performance often leaves me emotionally drained in a good way. The main reason is because Rubinstein controls the melody so well that it sounds like a human voice that is singing. Indeed, the pianists of the nineteenth century believed that the piano should sing and it was that singing tone that was most recognizable among pianists like Rubinstein and his contemporaries Vladimir Horowitz and Rudolf Serkin. All three of these pianists survived late into the twentieth century and they were the last of a school of piano playing that went back to Beethoven. The performances in the second half of the program are much more uneven. Rubinstein seems to be more comofrtable in the short pieces such as the 2 Etudes that he performs by Chopin (1810-49). In these blisteringly difficult pieces, Rubinstein shows that these are works that has lived with for an extremely long time. Maurizio Pollini and Murray Perahia may play these pieces with more precision and aplomb, but hardly anyone gives them back the poetry that they obviously possess. These are not simply exercises for the fingers to Rubinstein, instead they are works that speak profoundly to the heart.

Initiated by Prof. Jerzy Zurawlew in 1927 and held every five years. The 13th competition took place in 1995; the first prize was not awarded, two second prize winners (Silver Medal plus $20,000) were Philippe Giusiano (France) and Alexei Sultanov (Russia). Special prizes for the best performances of polonaises, mazurkas and concertos were not awarded. The best Polish performer was Magdalena Lisak who won the sixth prize and $4,000. The next competition will take place in 2005. The competition is usually divided into four stages. In the first stage the contestants perform one nocturne and two etudes. Nonetheless, despite the early flowering of his natural creative talents, numerous other factors - the influences of native music, a conservatoire training, his vivid experiences in Europe (especially Paris) in the immediate post-war years (he lived mainly in Paris from 1923), his return to Brazil in 1930 to become both a world-famous composer and national music director, and his legendary energy - all enabled Villa-Lobos to produce a vast amount of music, including two-hundred works for piano. Surprisingly, Villa-Lobos was a poor pianist (according to his widow), unable to play a simple scale correctly, yet his writing for the instrument is thoroughly idiomatic and essentially pianistic. In the works on this disc we can find a wide range of expression, from the major achievement that is Rudepoêma to the miniature delights of music written with children in mind. As Três Marias This little suite was composed at the suggestion of Edgar Varèse, whom Villa-Lobos had met in New York in 1939. At the time, Villa-Lobos had composed New York Skyline for orchestra, which arose from a suggestion from a journalist that Villa-Lobos project a photograph onto manuscript paper and use the outline of the image as a melodic line, which he then harmonised and later orchestrated. The resultant score fascinated Varèse, who asked for a similar experiment with regard to the night sky. 'The Three Marys' (Três Marias) is the name sometimes given to the three Belt stars (Alnilam, Alnitak and Mintaka - though the spellings vary) in the constellation Orion. In terms of texture and tessitura, the Três Marias are heard at their best when played consecutively, and when their additional pulse connections can be better appreciated. It should come as no surprise to learn that this little suite soon became one of the most frequently played solo piano works of this composer.

Ernesto Drangosch (1882-1925) Meet the Argentine Composers A Genius Rediscovered Little is known about Ernesto Drangosch, a virtuoso pianist, composer, conductor, pedagogue born in Buenos Aires on January 22, 1882, and died on June 26, 1925. An incredibly talented, multi-faceted personality, his life was totally devoted to every aspect of music. His parents came from Germany but he was Argentinian by birth. When he was a child he used to repeat by ear every note his brother played during his piano lessons at home in Buenos Aires. His father, Carlos Drangosch, the owner of an important music store in Buenos Aires, was so impressed by little Ernesto’s natural gifts that he immediately sent him to a Professor Collin, a European piano teacher who, as was the case in all of the American continent, played a major role in the early development of music schools in this part of the world.
