Clara Schumann (1819-1896) From a web biography , compiled by Carol Traxler: " The German romantic composer Clara Wieck Schumann (l8l9-l896) was one of the most famous pianists of her time, one of the great stars of 19th-century musical Europe. She premiered new works by Frederic Chopin, Johannes Brahms, and her husband Robert Schumann. While she composed prolifically from the age of nine, her spectacular performing career and the responsibility of supporting seven children after her husband's early death limited her output in her later years. Nonetheless, her musical output was 66 pieces. "Clara Josephine Wieck was born in Leipzig, Germany, on September 13, 1819. Her father was a piano store owner and a highly esteemed piano teacher. Her mother, a daughter and granddaughter of a musical family, was a talented pianist and soprano; she helped her husband in the store and taught the advanced piano students. Whenever Marianne Wieck performed, Friedrich Wieck's reputation as a music teacher improved and sales increased in the piano store. Marianne ran a household, maintained a concert career and bore her husband five children in seven years. But Clara and her brothers received very little affection from their parents."

The following info was derived from several web sites (sorry, I did not keep track of the sources). "I'm passionately involved in life - to be alive, to have music, to walk, to see - it's all a miracle. Music is not a hobby not even a passion. Music is me." "Above all pianists - indeed, above virtually any musician of the last fifty years - Arthur Rubinstein represented in both his life and his music-making a unique joie de vivre. That alone would set him apart in this serious musical age, where there is a high degree of skill but very little charm or poetry. Arthur Rubinstein was able to communicate joy in his playing. He loved the piano, he loved the music he played, and he was always able to charm audiences all over the world with one of the most extraordinary personalities that this century has seen. Of course that charm was buttressed by the mind of a superb musician, and by the fingers of a spectacular technician. Rubinstein coaxed a big, sonorous, golden tone from the instrument, and his fingers were in total command of anything in his repertoire. And that, paradoxically, was true even when he dropped notes or smudged passages here and there. For it was clear that a sloppy episode resulted not from lack of native ability but rather from sheer scorn of pedanticism. He was daring, he took chances, and if a few notes suffered en route that was unimportant. He was a natural, born to play the piano, and when he was on the concert stage one felt as though the piano itself was welded to his body. Musician and instrument were one.

    Arthur Rubinstein's Obituary (from Variety , December 22, 1982)
Rubinstein Dies At 95; Towering Pianistic Talent Arthur (aka Artur) Rubinstein, 95, the great classical pianist, died in his sleep Mon. (20) at his home in Geneva, Switzerland. Rubinstein, who had few rivals among contemporary pianists, enjoyed a lengthy performing career which began at the age of four and continued until he was nearly 90. Born in Lodz, Poland, in 1887, he was the youngest of seven children of a textile producer. He began studying piano at the age of three, and by the time he was eight, there was nothing more his professors at the Warsaw Conservatory of Music could teach him. Sent to Berlin to play for Joseph Joachim, he was taken under the famous violinist's wing and made his Berlin debut at the age of 11. Afterwards, he gave recitals in Dresden, Hamburg, and Warsaw and visited Ignace Paderewski, who was one of the leading pianists of the day. Following an unsuccessful American tour in 1906; he studied with Paderewiski until 1910, when he returned to the concert stage ad became a major star in Europe. During World War I, Rubinstein gave recitals for the Allied cause. He was so enraged by German treatment of the Belgians and the Poles that he vowed never to appear in Germany again, and he never did.

    http://www.wyastone.co.uk/nrl/gpiano/8815c.html
Friedheim's youth was spent in the Russian Empire's glittering capital, St. Petersburg: as he wrote in his fascinating volume Life and Liszt
After studying with Anton Rubinstein's pupil Carl Siecke, Friedheim became Rubinstein's piano pupil when he was fourteen years old. They were fruitful studies; Friedheim deeply admired Rubinstein and was awed by his piano playing when the master was in form. However, by the age of sixteen, Rubinstein's wayward temperament had become confusing to Friedheim. "His advice and criticism had begun to vary from day to day. He would say that I was going to be a successful pianist, then he could advise me to give all my time to composition. I decided to take all the advice he offered, and more, to become pianist, composer and conductor as well."
Friedheim decided to continue his education in The Faculty of Philosophy at St. Petersburg University. "Here I was in my element. I liked philosophy. Intense application was easy for me; yet I was gregarious and articulate and, because I was a good athlete, as well as a pupil of Rubinstein, and a pianist in my own right, I was popular."
He told the conservative Rubinstein that he wanted to go to Weimar to work with Liszt. In those years, Liszt's radical music left Rubinstein cold and angry. When someone asked Rubinstein where Friedheim had gone, he growled, "He went to Weimar - and to the devil." Friedheim hardly felt so. "I learned much from Rubinstein during the four years I was his pupil, but I was to learn far more from Franz Liszt, whose daring virtuosity had sounded the depths of music, both past and present, and who was now reaching out into the unknown... When I stood with exalted spirits in the presence of that august and legendary figure, Franz Liszt, my greatest hour had struck."

These Beethoven Concertos under Barenboim remain a valuable document of Arthur Rubinstein's twilight years; he died in 1982, having been born way back in 1887! These interpretations reveal playing of the utmost maturity, clearly the fruit of a lifetime's study. Yet in doing so they miss the spark of life that lies at the very heart of Beethoven. Barenboim of course has himself long been associated with these works having been the pianist himself – with Klemperer – early in his career. He clearly knows the score inside out, for his accompaniments are utterly sympathetic to the Rubinstein cause, and the LPO play with great concentration and, indeed, affection. Of course Rubinstein recorded cycles prior to this (1956, Symphony of the Air/Krips and 1963-7, Boston Symphony/Leinsdorf).

He indicated that his title, Sonata for Piano, did not reflect the form of Haydn and Mozart sonatas but referred to the original meaning of the source word, sonare, meaning sound, as opposed to vocal music (cantare). Proceeding with a fairly rapid, often perpetual motion, the sonata's outer movements frame the remarkable Adagietto in which Stravinsky presents one of his most elaborate flights of decorated melody. The sonata received its first performance at the Donaueschingen Festival in July 1925.
