World's greatest Hot Tune Writer " Jelly Roll Morton's business card "Jelly Roll" Morton (Ferdinand Joseph LeMothe Mouton) seems to have been born in New Orleans in 1890. In his youth he worked mainly as a solo pianist in New Orleans and cities of the Gulf Coast. He traveled widely in North America in the 1910s as a vaudevillian, musician, entertainer, nightclub owner, and other non-musical pursuits. In Chicago in the early 1920s, jazz had become a commercial proposition. Morton published his compositions, both old and new. In 1923 he began recording, at first mostly as a piano soloist, and some with pick up groups and sitting in with other bands. His talent as an orchestrator became fully revealed when he had a chance to record for Victor with a well rehearsed band. The "Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers" sides made in Chicago in 1926-1927 are some of the most highly regarded records in jazz history. Morton moved to New York City in 1928 where he continued to record. His piano solos and compositions continue at a high level, but the bands, lacking sidemen familiar with the New Orleans style, seldom achieve the high cohesion and excitement of the Chicago Victors.

A successful piano bar can oftentimes pay the bills that will keep a club's cabaret room open. Many of these clubs have singing bartenders and waiters/waitresses who could sing circles around a very high percentage of the folks who put on shows in cabaret rooms. When it comes to learning how to grab and hold an audience, performing at a piano bar is to singing what working on a soap opera is to an up-and-coming actor: it's a great place to make a living and learn your craft at the same time. It's also a place where you can make a reputation. We should first explain that piano bars have different staffs on different nights. One staff might concentrate on pop music. Another might do more show tunes. Each evening is also driven by the pianist; he or she chooses the music that will be played, calls up the hired talent (the waiters and waitresses) to sing, and controls the access to the open mike. It's the pianist, therefore, who provides the spark of personality to any piano bar evening. This survey is more about the people who work in piano bars rather than the random folks who take advantage of a piano bar's open mike opportunities. The point is, there is an amazing array of talent that can be seen for the price of a beer and we'd like to tell you where, when, and how to find that talent. Darren Holden, original Movin' Out understudy for the lead vocalist, will be the show's piano man on Broadway during Michael Cavanaugh's upcoming vacation, according to the singer's publicist. Holden, who has performed with the show sporadically since 2003 and starred in the national tour, will play on Broadway for five performances, Aug. 23-27, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. (More on Holden can be found on the web at www.darrenholden.com) The dance musical collaboration between pop legend Billy Joel and choreographer Twyla Tharp boasts most of its original cast — who have taken breaks here and there, but returned — including Tony Award nominees John Selya, Elizabeth Parkinson, Keith Roberts, Ashley Tuttle, Michael Cavanaugh as well as Scott Wise and Benjamin G. Local pianist Myette proved he had a flair for melody and arranging on his recent solo outing, This Is Jazz . Funkhouser, whose name couldn’t be more appropriate for a bass player, also leads his own band FunkHouse and has toured the US, Asia, and elsewhere in pursuit of the perfect groove. Drummer Mike Connors has played with the likes of Joe Hunt and Alan Dawson, as well as erstwhile local neo-loungers Combustible Edison. Their adventurous debut together as Katahdin’s Edge is a lot like nothing you’ve heard before. Step Away brings drama and depth and forward movement to what can often be a pretty pat jazz formula. The title cut begins with an almost acid-jazz rhythm track running under everything like a rushing current, while Myette swims atop it with his fleet and beautiful piano hooks.
