(March 20, 1915 - August 1, 1997) Ukraine
Pianist Sviatoslav was born in Zhitomir, in the Ukraine of German descent. His father, Theophile, was an organist and gave the young Sviatoslav his early musical training. Sviatoslav's mother, Anna, was a talented artist who loved music and was related to the Swedish soprano Jenny Lind. The young Sviatoslav was essentially self-taught and developed his exceptional technique by playing whatever music he liked. By the age of eight he was playing opera scores, including the music of Richard Wagner. He had the ability to memorize any music at sight. Sviatoslav grew up in Odessa, where his father taught at the Conservatory. His debut as a soloist came in 1934, at the Odessa House of Engineers. The recital was a great success and Sviatoslav's career as virtuoso was under way. In 1937 Sviatoslav left Odessa for Moscow to study with the great pianist and pedagogue Heinrich Neuhaus. Sviatoslav did not take the entrance exam at the Conservatory. He simply asked Neuhaus to teach him. Neuhaus listened to his playing and declared that he had nothing to teach Sviatoslav but accepted him as a pupil anyway. In 1940, while still a student at Moscow Conservatory, Sviatoslav made his Moscow debut. When Prokofiev completed his Seventh Sonata in 1942, he gave it to Sviatoslav for the premiere. Sviatoslav learned the piece in only four days. He also gave the first performances of Prokofiev's Eighth and Ninth Sonatas, the last of which was dedicated to Sviatoslav.

Sviatoslav Richter
Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter March 20 August 1 ) was a Russian pianist of German extraction. Although born in Zhitomir in Ukraine , Richter grew up in Odessa . Unusually, Richter was largely self-taught. Although his organist father provided him with a basic education in music, Sviatoslav learned simply by playing the masterworks of the repertoire, including the piano scores of Wagner 's music dramas. He gave his first recital in 1934 but did not formally study piano until three years later, when he enrolled in the Moscow Conservatory , which waived the entrance exam for the young prodigy. He studied with Heinrich Neuhaus who also taught Emil Gilels , and who claimed Richter to be "the genius pupil, for whom he had been waiting all his life". In 1940, while still a student, he gave the world premiere of the Sonata No. 6 by Sergei Prokofiev , a composer with whose works he was ever after associated. He also became known for skipping compulsory lessons at the conservatory and being expelled twice in his first year. The West first became aware of Richter through recordings made in the 1950s. He was not allowed to tour the

    SOVIET NOSTALGIA

Kurt Andersen and the writer Svetlana Boym explore how artists worked in the Soviet Union and what it means to them and to us today.
    PAINTING IN PRE-GLASNOST RUSSIA
When we think of Soviet Art, we think of the propaganda posters and the figurative heroic paintings and sculpture that glorified the Soviet leaders. That kind of Social Realism dominated official art in Russia, starting in the 1930's. But artists found ways to pursue their own styles in secret. They organized private, apartment viewings of their work, and then finally, near the end of the Cold War, were able to bring their paintings out in the open. Pamela Renner talked to the painters Vitaly Komar and Grisha Bruskin about their transformation from subversives to international stars.

CULTURAL EXCHANGE For a moment during the Cold War - in the decade between Josef Stalin's death until the Cuban Missile Crisis - something called "Cultural Exchange" formed a warm glow in U. S.-Soviet relations. It started with one pianist in 1955, named Emil Gilels, and led to a sudden mutual discovery of two nations' best music and musicians. Sara Fishko talked to some of the people who helped raise the Iron Curtain, slightly and briefly, almost 50 years ago.
