BIOGRAPHIES
Last update: September 5 th Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter
(March 20, 1915 - August 1, 1997) Ukraine
Pianist Sviatoslav was born in Zhitomir, in the Ukraine of German descent. His father, Theophile, was an organist and gave the young Sviatoslav his early musical training. Sviatoslav's mother, Anna, was a talented artist who loved music and was related to the Swedish soprano Jenny Lind. The young Sviatoslav was essentially self-taught and developed his exceptional technique by playing whatever music he liked. By the age of eight he was playing opera scores, including the music of Richard Wagner. He had the ability to memorize any music at sight. Sviatoslav grew up in Odessa, where his father taught at the Conservatory. His debut as a soloist came in 1934, at the Odessa House of Engineers. The recital was a great success and Sviatoslav's career as virtuoso was under way. In 1937 Sviatoslav left Odessa for Moscow to study with the great pianist and pedagogue Heinrich Neuhaus. Sviatoslav did not take the entrance exam at the Conservatory. He simply asked Neuhaus to teach him. Neuhaus listened to his playing and declared that he had nothing to teach Sviatoslav but accepted him as a pupil anyway. In 1940, while still a student at Moscow Conservatory, Sviatoslav made his Moscow debut. When Prokofiev completed his Seventh Sonata in 1942, he gave it to Sviatoslav for the premiere. Sviatoslav learned the piece in only four days. He also gave the first performances of Prokofiev's Eighth and Ninth Sonatas, the last of which was dedicated to Sviatoslav.

[78'52"] full-price by Evan Stephens Not many people know that Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter (1915 - 1997), besides being one of this century's greatest pianists, was also an amateur artist, painting watercolors and drawing charcoal sketches of locations he had visited on tour. Not many people know, also, that he was originally slated to become a conductor, but found the piano more suited to his tastes instead. These two factors come very much into play when analyzing any of his playing, and this new release by Doremi is no exception. Being a painter, Richter surely knew what the purest intentions of making art were, and this is clearly evident in this CD. His unique artistic vision (he was often deemed, like Chopin was before him, the "poet of the piano") provided him with a distinct idea of the music he played. No two Richter interpretations are ever the same, much like no two paintings of the same subject by an artist are exactly the same. And being trained as a conductor, Richter knew the driving force behind the music he played, something that became his trademark. Indeed, after hearing him in 1958 Van Cliburn remarked that "this is the most powerful piano-playing I have ever heard"! His driving rhythm, clear idea of the forces at play, and unique concept of the music and how it should be interpreted by his deft, swift fingers gave Richter a status that is legendary today.

Richter underplays the dramatic qualities of the music in favor of an objective, undifferentiated literal presentation of the notes. He shows either a thorough misunderstanding or thorough disregard of Baroque principles of phrasing, articulation, gesture, rhetoric, ornamentation, and notational conventions. His treatment of rhythm in the violin sonata arrangement is particularly wooden and unimaginative, and phrases are run together with no sense of vocal breathing space. It also sounds nothing like the physical motions of violin bowing. Despite all those caveats (which some may consider virtues), this is obviously some highly polished piano playing: graceful, effortlessly flowing, relaxed, gentle, and beatifically clueless. These are intimate performances with beautifully controlled tone, evenly-weighted fingerwork, few dynamic contrasts, no eccentricities, and no surprises. The tempos are steady except for a few rushed moments in the Italian Concerto, and the articulation is almost always a neutral legato. Richter is forthright in playing exactly what he sees on the page, and leaves everything else to the listener's imagination.

While the Symphonic Dances of 1940 enjoy some popularity, as well as the symphonic poem The Rock and the dark-hued Isle of the Dead, with its recurrent motif from the Latin Requiem Mass, the second of his three numbered symphonies is still more familiar. b Semyonovo, Starorussky, 1873 d Beverly Hills, Calif., 1943) Rachmaninov, Sergey The Musician After study at the St. Petersburg and Moscow Conservatories, Sergey Rachmaninov embarked on a career in Russia as a composer, pianist and conductor. Exile from his own country after the Communist Revolution of 1917 forced an increased concentration on performance, as one of the most distinguished pianists of the day, activity that enabled him to support his family but left less time for his work as a composer. For practical reasons he eventually based himself in the United States, while keeping a villa in Switzerland. He died in Beverly Hills in 1943.

The piano is one of my favorite instruments along with period strings and the human voice. Masters of the piano such as Richter have measureably enhanced the quality of my life, and I owe no small part in this to the technology of recorded sound. We can now listen to Richter perform his art from a myriad of concert locations throught the world. The sound quality of these recordings varies greatly. Sometimes, the sound is not detrimental to enjoyment of the music; sometimes it is. Also, each of us has our own threshold and sense of sound quality which impacts negatively on the music. This must be my lead-in to Richter's account of Bach's WTC, Book 1 from Russian Revelation. Richter's performances are outstanding; I can't report that the sound quality disguises his brilliance. But, the sound quality is still poor. Although recorded in 1969, it might as well have been 1939. Well, you can't have everything, and I am thankful for this recording which gives us a picture of of two supremely gifted artists. I'd also like to take this opportunity to wish each of you a happy Thanksgiving - have a great day.
