"Real mastery can only be achieved through devotion and humbleness." - These words, noticed during one of Philipp's conversations with students, may characterize his attitude towards music. "Indeed," he says, "sincere expression leaves no space for airs and graces. It is the result of permanent self-control and clear awareness of the composer's intentions. Yet I feel so free when playing the piano - it is like conquering this wonderful instrument and diving into a colorful, wide range of emotions." Music was present from the beginnings: on May 3, 1976, Philipp J. Richardsen was born in Vienna, Austria, into a family of Austrian, German, and Danish descent. By the age of three, he had created his own songs, which he would then present to his parents; two years later, he discovered the piano and received his first piano lesson. "It was quite tough as my first teacher seemed like Methuselah to me; he was almost deaf and very strict, and he immediately insisted that I learn how to read music. I could barely reach the pedal and was already practicing major and minor scales," he recalls those times. At the age of ten, Philipp was invited to enter the piano class of the legendary Viennese pedagogue Susanne Dressler, then eighty-two years old, who had studied with music leading lights like I.J. Paderewski or Maurice Ravel. Additionally, he joined the music conservatory in the city of Linz as an associate student. "Professor Dressler was a phenomenon," he says. "Her huge experience, her wisdom and supreme ease as a teacher were features that I will benefit from for a lifetime. She reinforced my interest in humanism and belletristic literature, which made a whole new world open up for me."

Pianist Yael Weiss, with violist Helen Callus, in recital. At Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall, Thursday, April 28.
Reviewed by Gerald Carpenter Robert Schumann is one of those composers whose fame is kept alive mainly by pianists and conductors, rather than the music-loving public. He is a "great" composer because everybody says so. With a few exceptions, I find his music to contain an endless proliferation of half-baked ideas. Why a gifted and subtle pianist of Yael Weiss' caliber should choose an all-Schumann program for her debut recital as a faculty pianist at UCSB is an all but unfathomable mystery. I find that most pianists adore Schumann, even though their audiences do not. Perhaps Weiss' own professors persuaded her of the composer's genius, and she is announcing her intention to do the same for her students. (Sigh.) Weiss played Schumann's "Impromptus on a Theme by Clara Wieck," "Humoreske," "Maerchenbilder for Viola and Piano" (with Helen Callus, viola), and "Drei Phantasiestücke."

Since Jennefelt is probably not a household name for you, it might interest you to know that the Swedish composer was born in 1954 in Huddinge, and was educated at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm from 1974 to 1980. Vocal music dominates his output, which ranges from choral music to opera. He was chairman of the Society of Swedish Composers from 1994 to 2000. news living opinions classifieds ... home
