Joining Gluzman on the program for this special evening will be a trio composed of Erin Hannigan on the oboe, Greg Hustis on the horn and Edward Neuman on the piano. Hustis and Hannigan are leading members of the Dallas symphony orchestra. These musicians have performed in venues all over North America and also, in the case of Hustis, in Rio de Janeiro. Hustis and Newman also have made recordings of their performances.
Pompa-Baldi will be joined by a trio composed of Theodore Arm on the violin, Barbara Hustis on the viola and Jan Simiz on the cello. Together they will play the Schumann Piano Quartet in E Major. Each of these players is well known in the music world, having made names for themselves performing solo and in chamber groups on stages around the world.
Both these concerts begin at 7 pm at BootJack Ranch on US 160 east of Pagosa Springs, thanks to the generosity of David and Carol Brown, owners of the ranch. Cost of these concerts is $40, and tickets are available at the Pagosa Chamber of Commerce.

    Who is Frederic Chiu?
Frederic Chiu is a young musician (age 33) who makes his living playing the piano. Boring, you say? Not so! He gets to travel all over the world doing this, and as a result of his musical gift, he has participated in and has been awarded prizes from many piano competitions, including the 1993 Van Cliburn International Pinao Competition, where he was a semifinalist. Not only does Mr. Chiu play the piano, he also composes music of his own, and has even made several recordings that you can buy in music stores right here in Fort Worth!
Mr. Chiu says the following about himself:
"I started taking piano lessons when I was six years old. It was my parents' idea, and they made me practice every day; even though sometimes I didn't feel like practicing. I played a lot of different classical music when I was young: Mozart, Bach, Clementi, etc. ...I did a lot of things besides music though too - Little League baseball, basketball, Boy Scouts; I even took Kung Fu lessons! I was a rather shy kid ...but I liked playing the piano, since I did pretty well."

BY DOUGLAS McLENNAN W riting about last summer's Van Cliburn Competition, Time dubbed it the "Gong Show" of classical music. So much for the world's top international piano contest, the once-every-four-years gathering of young virtuosos sometimes referred to as the Olympics of classical music. Such scorn is probably an accurate reflection of the esteem piano contests are held in these days. The rap against competitions is that they produce bland, offend-no-one performers who have leeched out the personality from their playing. In the past, big techniques have won out over style, and individualized artistry has seldom been rewarded.
