Home Archives Births Business ... Weather March 4, 2004 Front Page Public places smoking ban thoughts mixed By Tom Carosello Staff Writer Should Archuleta County ban smoking in public places? That question was the centerpiece of a brief discussion comprised of varying opinions during Tuesday's meeting of the county board of commissioners. Speaking in favor of a public smoking ban, Commissioner Mamie Lynch, board chairman, stated she believes such a measure would benefit not only the community's health, but image as well. "I am very offended when I drive down the street and see people smoking in front of the courthouse," said Lynch. Lynch also conveyed she respects the rights of individuals to smoke in private domains, yet added she feels "very strongly that we should protect people" from the dangers of secondhand smoke often associated with bars, restaurants and similar establishments. Apparently, potential support for such a ban could come from a number of local entities. According to Lynch, initial feedback stemming from conversations she has had with Pagosa Springs Mayor Ross Aragon indicates town council could be presented the smoking-ban issue in the near future. The San Juan Basin Health Department, said Lynch, is also interested in pursuing the subject - a notion verified by health department officials during a separate presentation later in the session.

Welcome to a New Year! It's inevitable that with every new year, we set aside various resolutions. Whether it is to 'lose 20 pounds' or 'exercise more,' each of us are guilty of making the pledge, but come February 5 th , well… I hope all of you took a chance to read the forum focus article in the October/November 2003 issue of " American Music Teacher ." As you know, I am an independent music teacher in a small community, so this issue was very important to me. In addition, in our own state of Wisconsin, many school boards are being faced with massive budget cuts, and unfortunately, one of the early areas they seem to eliminate is the Arts. Both zoning issues and the attitude that music is nonessential is an area we, as members of WMTA need to advocate. As educators, we need to become more 'proactive' in our community and in our organization. Try to remember that one of the most important aspects to being a member of WMTA/MTNA is not 'so my students can participate in auditions.' We are a network of over 24,000 independent and collegiate professionals. Alone, we are nothingbut as a group we can have a loud voice. As the AMT article states, the support this teacher received from MTNA was fundamental to saving her studio and career.

A Message from CAMTA President Debra Pajtas
Dear CAMTA members, As newly elected president, I welcome each of you back to a new year of teaching! I am looking forward to what the next two years will bring and hope that they will be rewarding for all of us! We have a great, energetic executive board with Tara Kollar, vice president, Dianne Klinger, recording secretary, Stuart Foster, corresponding secretary, Amber Redoutey, treasurer, and Katherine Richardson, past-president. Tara has some great programs lined up for this year that I know you will enjoy. I would like to encourage each of you to bring a piano teacher who is not a member of our group to the first meeting on September 13! We will be giving an introductory presentation on CAMTA and its programs. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit different "booths" featuring Student Achievement Testing, Federation Festival, Guild Auditions, PAS, Ensemble Festival, State Certification, and Scholarships. Our own members who chair these events or features will be available to give a summary of the activity and to answer questions.

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has announced its schedule of lectures and performances to be presented by the Artists Series and The Forum during their 1999-2000 season. All programs begin at 7:30 p.m.
The nine-event Artists Series season will begin Wednesday, Sept. 8, with a Zorn Arena performance by the Tibetan Monks from the Drepung Loesling Monastery. Featured on the soundtrack of the 1998 film "Seven Years in Tibet," the multiphonic singers are dedicated to sharing Tibet's ancient sacred music and dance with Western audiences. As well as performing in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, the monks have shared the stage with Kitaro, Paul Simon, Sheryl Crow, Michael Stipe, Patti Smith and Natalie Merchant, among others.
Details on the other eight Artists Series season events follow:
Aviram Reichert, pianist; Wednesday, Oct. 6, Gantner Concert Hall. When this Israeli pianist won the bronze medal at the Tenth International Van Cliburn Piano Competition in 1997, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram called his performance "a miracle of voicing, expression and intellect. His perfect command of detail approaches the level of genius; no fine point escapes his notice, even as note by note he builds the total magnificent structure."
