Dylana Jenson, violin ; Aviram Reichert, piano By the time she was thirteen, Dylana Jenson performed with most major orchestras in the United States and traveled to Europe and Latin America for concerts, recitals, and recordings. She was the youngest and first American woman to win the silver medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition, after which she made her Carnegie Hall debut playing the Sibelius Concerto with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Ms. Jenson has toured Australia and Japan and has recently performed with the Louisiana Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony, New Mexico Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, and with the Grand Rapids Symphony in its seventy-fifth anniversary concert in Carnegie Hall. Israeli pianist Aviram Reichert won the bronze medal at the tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1997, only months after being awarded the top prize in the First Dong-A International Piano Competition in Seoul, Korea. Mr. Reichert has performed with the Jerusalem Broadcast Symphony Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Sinfonietta, National Symphony of the Dominican Republic, Fort Worth Symphony, and Grand Rapids Symphony. His U.S. recital engagements have included Atlanta, San Antonio, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. Both Jenson and Reichert are currently on the music faculty at Grand Valley State University.

Yakov Kasman came into the competition with credentials few could beat - a winner at the 1992 Arthur Rubinstein Competition, he had also won the Second Prize in the 1995 International Prokofiev Competition in St. Petersburg. Trained in Russia, he possesses a technique other performers can only dream about. It is not surprising that prior to the results he was the outright favourite for the top prize. For this disc, he plays two very interesting and rare pieces. The first is the 9-minute Allegro in B minor by Schumann, which appears to bear some inspiration from

INKTRODUCTION. It is not uncommon for Americans to give ticker-tape parades to homecoming winning basketball teams like the Chicago Bulls or Olympic medallists; but for a pianist- that's practically unheard of. Well, that is exactly what happened to Van Cliburn, the tall Texan, when he won the First (ever) Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. A virtual unknown on Russian soil, he was soon to be the favourite going into the finals. The Russians were shocked but not surprised for Cliburn possessed charm, charisma, stature and not forgetting good technique. Practically every major classical recording star has won a major competition, Martha Argerich - the Chopin Competition; Vladimir Ashkenazy - 2nd Tchaikovsky Competition 1962; Murray Perahia - Leeds Piano Competition; Kristian Zimmerman - Chopin Competition and the list goes on and on. In fact it is now a great belief that one needs a major competition to bolster one's career. Major competitions like the Leeds, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, Tchaikovsky and Chopin Competitions give the winners major career breakthroughs, with engagements at various major halls and festivals, recording contracts with major labels like DG, EMI or Teldec (who can normally afford the crème de la crème). Past winners of the Van Cliburn competition in recent years have included Jose Fenghali and Alexei Sultanov.

Concert Hall grand setting for festival orchestra July 31, 2000 By Judith Reynolds
Special to the Herald An embarrassment of riches – Saturday night’s performance in the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College featured two conductors and three big works: Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, Poulenc’s Concerto in D Minor for two pianos, and Saint-Saens’ majestic Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, the "Organ Symphony." Thursday, Friday concerts were also outstanding The Thursday and Friday Music in the Mountains concerts also offered memorable performances. Thursday’s program in the Purgatory performance presented works by Haydn, Ravel and Copland. However, the night belonged to Israeli pianist Aviram Reichert, who ignited the audience with a vigorous reading of Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 2. Like a jet fueled rocket, Reichert played with an intensity that never let up. By the time he reached the finale, Reichert had established a perfect thrust of musical necessity. It was as if he, the orchestra, and the audience were on a launch pad lifting off. I’m serious. People around me marked the urgency of the music in a variety of ways. One woman down the row rocked her green plastic chair with such muscularity I thought she’d go overboard before the pianist did.

("Yediot Aharonot" Nov. 28) A revolutionary patent has been developed in Israel, a computerized optical device, to "observe brain cells 'conversing' among themselves." It was developed by Professor Amiram Grinwald of the Weizmann Institute of Scientific Research. It uses an extremely sensitive camera. The system is already in use in the U.S., in brain surgery for malignant growths. Its main purpose is to locate the areas in the brain responsible for essential functions like sight and speech and thus reduce to a minimum the risk of harming them during surgery. The invention, according to Prof. Grinwald, will also help decipher genetic codes and contribute to understanding the mechanism of heredity. Three Bus Companies for Trips from Israel to Jordan. The Los Angeles Times "...Reichert played them, with nuances, strength and the unhurried sound of someone who knows how to say just what he means...it also showed that he is considerably more than a contest winner." Chicago Tribune "As anticipated, Reichert’s Schubert proved to be a miracle of voicing, expression and intellect. His perfect command of detail approaches the level of genius; no fine point escapes his notice, even as note by note he builds the total magnificent structure...Chopin’s Nocturne in C minor - a thunderstorm on a sultry night - and the same composer’s Etude in B minor - a hurricane of octaves - closed the program with the same incredible attention to tone and detail." Not since Lazar Berman’s recitals of the 1970s have I heard Liszt played with such drop-dead virtuosity wedded to such clarity of purpose."
