Nicolas Flagello was one of the 20th century¹s leading exponents of traditional late romantic musical values. Without ever repudiating this aesthetic outlook, he succeeded in forging a personal musical language and a distinctive body of work shaped by his own temperament and embodying his own unique perspective on life. Born in New York City in 1928, Flagello grew up in a musical family with deep roots in old-world traditions. Something of a prodigy, young Nicolas was composing and performing publicly as a pianist before the age of ten. While still a child, he began a long and intensive apprenticeship with composer Vittorio Giannini, who further imbued him with the enduring values of the grand European tradition. His study continued at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned both his Bachelor¹s (1949) and Master¹s (1950) degrees, joining the faculty immediately upon graduation and remaining there until 1977. During the early l950s, he won a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Rome, and earned the Diploma di Studi Superiori in 1956 from the Accademia

Pianist plus symphony: Super Mozart
April 28, 2001 Sonia Rubinsky is one of the leading pianists in her native Brazil, but not as yet too widely known in North America. That is Virginia's good fortune this weekend, as Rubinsky joins the Richmond Symphony in perhaps the finest performance of Mozart this orchestra has ever played.
Rubinsky is the soloist in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K. 467, one of the two memorable surprises in this program. The other employs every crowd-displeasing technique of modernism, yet holds audiences in thrall.
Rubinsky's tone is crystalline, her marksmanship unerring. She phrases flexibly and ornaments freely but tastefully. But she earns her place among the piano masters of Mozart (Perahia, Uchida and Brendel, to name some names) because she knows how to differentiate Mozart's consonants from his vowels - playing rhythmically with a percussive edge and lyrically with a fluidity that makes the listener forget the piano makes sounds when hammers strike strings. Clarke Bustard, Richmond Times-Dispatch

I spent many years admiring and working with photography and paintings and I must say that it's very hard to make a great photograph such as a masterpiece. I could see many great photographs in your work which look like masterpieces made by talented painters.
I admire your hard work and talent which have both paid to creat such interesting images.
I look forward to see more of your artistic looking photographs and if you have some free time, have a look at my work. www.abdelfhamouda.com Richard Haas 02-Sep-2005 08:20 could you please contact me, thanks in advance Vlado Marinkovic 25-Aug-2005 12:07 Dear Guest,

HENRY HADLEY and American Late Romanticism JOHN ALDEN CARPENTER (1876-1951): Symphony No. 1, Symphony No. 2, Adventures in a Perambulator. While Adventures (1914) is an extroverted work, depicting a full day in the life of a babe in a stroller in music of great humor and bright orchestral colors, the two symphonies (each lasting less than 20 minutes) are much more inward pieces, peaceful and gently lyrical rather than outgoingly Romantic. The first (1940) is a reworking of an earlier symphonic attempt from 1917 condensed into a single-movement work in five sections full of mercurial changes of tempo and mood. The second is a 1947 revision of a 1934 piano quintet and its three movements are cultured, modest and unostentatious. National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine; John McLaughlin Williams. A new recording brings us the first recording of the Symphony No. 7 in the version printed at Langgaard's own expense in 1927, the first of his symphonies to abandon the expressionism and apocalypicism of his first six, trading that in for a neo-Romanticism which was his response to the cool, pure clarity of the then-prevailing neo-Classicism. The environment of political and artistic turmoil in the early part of the 20th Century elicited a very different response from Prokofiev, a precocious conservatory student brazenly challenging textbook conventions, as compared to Medtner, a well-established musical reactionary whose sonata is laced with reveries of the past. Shostakovich's sonata, on the other hand, written at the height of his career, serves as both a personal tribute to the loss of a friend and a profound reflection on a nation recovering from a genocidal occupation JDT 158 Audio Sample: Medtner SONATA REMINISCENZA CDs:

Summary for the Busy Executive : Winning. This disc brings together piano music from 20th-century Italian-American composers largely ignored. Although they all had performances of their works and commissions at least some time in their careers, these men came under a cloud of indifference. To a great extent, American music passed them by. I would also contend that while their talents were true, they were minor (excepting Flagello), and for some reason, people don't want to spend time with anything less than the absolute bona fide best. It's a version of the Beethoven's Ninth Syndrome. The problem is that, taking the attitude to its extreme, you wind up listening to just one work. So the question really is how much dross you will tolerate. Will you listen to Brahms's Second? Mahler's Fifth? Bach's Cantata #10? How about Grieg's Piano Concerto or Schubert's Rosamunde music? The syndrome indicates, in my opinion, an unhealthy attitude toward art that segregates it to the quasi-sacred part of our lives, rather than relates it to all parts of our lives. In other words, art shouldn't necessarily be something we have to dress up for.
