Rachmaninov, Sergey After study at the St. Petersburg and Moscow Conservatories, Sergey Rachmaninov embarked on a career in Russia as a composer, pianist and conductor. Exile from his own country after the Communist Revolution of 1917 forced an increased concentration on performance, as one of the most distinguished pianists of the day, activity that enabled him to support his family but left less time for his work as a composer. For practical reasons he eventually based himself in the United States, while keeping a villa in Switzerland. He died in Beverly Hills in 1943. Orchestral Music The second of Rachmaninov's four piano concertos holds an unchallenged position among romantic works in this form, its popularity closely rivalled by the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, for piano and orchestra. While the Symphonic Dances of 1940 enjoy some popularity, as well as the symphonic poem The Rock and the dark-hued Isle of the Dead, with its recurrent motif from the Latin Requiem Mass, the second of his three numbered symphonies is still more familiar. But it took several years before we found the orchestra and conductor that we felt would do justice to this important project. The combination of Dallas and Litton offers a conductor who adores Rachmaninov (he has recorded all the symphonies) and understands the works from a pianist’s perspective, an orchestra with a glorious and old-fashioned string sound of the kind with which the composer would be familiar, a hall to record in which is one of the best in the world, and let’s not forget Stephen Hough who has already won two Gramophone ‘Record of the Year’ accolades for his concerto recordings. As the results here triumphantly show, all our hopes have been fulfilled, and more. Apart from the ‘Paganini Rhapsody’, recorded after a concert performance, these are essentially ‘live’ recordings. Over a period of eighteen days eleven concerts were given, with each concerto being played several times. His father was an army officer and his mother was a wealthy heiress. His father gambled, drank, and squandered his wife's money. He deserted his family when Sergei was nine years old. By all accounts Young Sergei was a problem child, but had an extraordinary talent at the piano. At age nine he entered the College of Music in St. Petersburg. Because of his natural gift, Sergei did not bother to study. To solve his discipline problem Rachmaninoff moved to Moscow to live with Nikolai Zvereff of the Moscow Conservatory. Zvereff was one of the leading music teachers in Russia at the time. In 1892, Rachmaninoff graduated from the conservatory with high honors. In 1909, Rachmaninoff made his first visit to the United States, receiving an enthusiastic welcome. Afterwards, he visited America once every season. Rachmaninoff died on March 28, 1943, only a few weeks after attaining his American citizenship, and five days before his seventieth birthday. SERGEI VASSILYEVITCH RACHMANINOV (1873 - 1943) Sergei Rachmaninov was undoubtedly one of the greatest performers ever and nobody who heard him playing Beethoven'sAppassionata, Chopin's B flat minor sonata or the Liszt transcriptions of Bach readily forgot him. Rachmaninov's father was an aristrocatric landowner who resigned his commission in the Cavalry's Guards of the Imperial Russian Army and retired to his estate in the Novgord district where he became involved in various musical activities. Lyou Boutakovia, Rachmaninov's mother had been born into a wealthy family and was also very interested in music so that when the four year old Sergei decided he wished to play the piano it was his mother who gave him his first piano lessons. Inside two months, Rachmaninov had achieved what a normal child would take two years to accomplish on the piano and was playing quite difficult works to visitors. Soon his mother engaged Anna Ornazkaya, an ex student of the St. John Petersburg Conservatoire as his teacher. Despite his interest in music Rachmaninov's father wanted him to enter the military academy at St Petersburg but his mother was equally insistent that he should go to the Anton Rubinstein Conservatoire in the same city. The matter was resplved when Rachmaninov obtained a scholarship to the conservatoire and as his father had squandered all his money he ws allowed to take it up.

While it seldom transpires that one gains equal distinction as a composer, and a pianist, yet this may be said of Rachmaninov. In the course of the next hundred years or so the excellence of his piano playing will no doubt have become mythical, but the message of his musical compositions for the orchestra, for the voice and for the piano will still remain as cherished treasures of mankind. One fine morning not long ago, I found myself, by appointment, in the spacious studio of Rachmaninov overlooking the Hudson. In this quiet and contemplative room where the master did much of his composing, we talked of many things. In the course of our conversation I asked the master musician from Moscow how he first gained recognition as a composer, for this is one of the most difficult things a young composer has to contend with.
