BIOGRAPHIES
Last update: October 31 st Sergei Vsilevich Rachmaninov
(1873 - 1943) Russia - U.S.A.
Composer and pianist Born at Onega, in Novgorod, he studied at the St Petersburg and Moscow conservatoires. He then embarked on a career in Russia as a composer, pianist and conductor. After the 1917 Communist Revolution he became an exile from his own country. His dramatically emotional music has a strong melodic basis and includes operas, for example Aleko Il cavaliere avaro (1906), and Francesca da Rimini (1906), three symphonies, four piano concertos, piano pieces, and songs. Among his most familiar works are the Prelude in C Minor and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini for piano and orchestra. He was one of the most distinguished pianists of the day, activity that enabled him to support his family but left less time for his work as a composer. For practical reasons he eventually based himself in the United States, while keeping a villa in Switzerland. He died in Beverly Hills in 1943. Click on the letter R to go back to the list of names

Haddock CD-1907

Roland Pöntinen plays Liszt includes famous works like Vallée d’Obermann and Les Jeux d’eaux à la Villa d’Este as well as a neglected masterpiece: Scherzo und Marsch – a highly virtuosic work, charged with demonic intensity. Another rarely performed masterpiece on the CD is Danza sacra e duetto finale based on themes from Verdi’s Aida. As a recitalist Roland Pöntinen has won the affection of the music-loving public all over the world and he has a devoted following among piano aficionados. He is also one of the most widely recorded of contemporary pianists with over 70 titles on labels like BIS, Philips and c p o. His interpretations of music by Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Busoni, Debussy, Ligeti and Rachmaninov are highly acclaimed both on the concert platform and on disc. This CD is the first production on the new HADDOCK label.
