Home About Biography Research ... Forum Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff was born into a family of landowners on 1st April 1873 at Oneg, near Novgorod, Russia. He was the fourth of six children. His father, Vasily, was a retired army officer and his mother, Lyubov, a wealthy general's daughter. Both were amateur pianists. Lyubov gave Sergei his first piano lessons at the age of four, but apparently saw nothing remarkable in her son's abilities. Sergei was seven years old when the family governess drew attention to his musical gifts, and Anna Ornatzkaya, a graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatory, was hired to teach him. Though a charming personality, Vasily was also a spendthrift and womaniser. He squandered the family fortune, and by 1882 all five of their estates had to be sold. The family moved to St Petersburg, where a diphtheria epidemic happened to be sweeping through the city. Sergei and two of his siblings caught the disease, and while he and his brother Vladimir pulled through, his sister Sophia died. Relations between the parents were now irreparably damaged and Vasili left the family. During these difficult times Sergei's greatest joy was his doting grandmother Butakova. She bought a farm for Sergei in the Novgorod countryside - where he spent several summers - and often took him to attend church services, which instilled in him a deep love of vocal music and an endless fascination with the sound of bells.

He studied at the Moscow Conservatory (1885-92) under Zverev (where Skryabin was a fellow pupil) and his cousin Ziloti for piano and Taneyev and Arensky for composition, graduating with distinction as both pianist and composer (the opera Aleko , given at the Bol'shoy in 1893, was his diploma piece). During the ensuing years he composed piano pieces (including his famous c-sharp Minor Prelude), songs and orchestral works, but the disastrous premiere in 1897 of his Symphony no.1, poorly conducted by Glazunov, brought about a creative despair that was not dispelled until he sought medical help in 1900: then he quickly composed his Second Piano Concerto. The Rachmaninov Lover's Home Page It is tempting to explain Sergey Vasil'yevich Rachmaninov's lifelong outward stoicism, the icy demeanor he always exhibited when performing, as a protective mechanism acquired slowly and painfully in his youth, when one difficulty after another presented itself to a sensitive, naturally withdrawn young man who was nevertheless determined to make his way in the world as a musician. He had little help from his parents. His father squandered the famiIy fortune so quickly that Sergey was only nine years old when he saw the estate at Novgorod where they had lived, the last of their property, auctioned off to pay debts. By that time Rachmaninov was studying piano with his cousin Alexander Ziloti and composing prolifically. He would endure further hardships, but at least his genius was also being recognized, and he began to gather champions to his cause. An early convert was the older composer Peter Tchaikovsky, who attended the performance of his graduation piece, the opera Aleko. But it took several years before we found the orchestra and conductor that we felt would do justice to this important project. Sergei Vassilyevich Rachmaninoff Music to accompany this page: Elegie Op. 2 , by Rachmaninoff Sergey Vassilyevich Rachmaninoff was born on April 1, 1873, into an aristocratic family in Novgorod, Russia. By the age of six, Sergey had begun piano lessons, with Anna Ornatskaya, of the St. Petersburg Conservatory. She noted a special talent in the young boy, and later recommended him for scholarship to the conservatory in 1881. His father, a former captain in the Imperial Guard, squandered nearly all of his wife's dowry, which included five estates, by 1882. The family was forced to move into a small apartment in St. Petersburg. A diphtheria epidemic was running rapid through the city, and Sergei, and two of his siblings became ill. His sister, Sophia was unable to overcome the illness, and eventually succumbed to it. His failures and the death of Sophia humiliated and he left his wife, leaving her to raise the remaining four children on her own. From 1883-1885, Sergey studied at the conservatory in St. Petersburg, but troubles within his family life, and his obsession with the piano, drew his attention away from his studies. The result, was failure in all of his exams. At the schools recommendation, his mother sent him to Moscow to study at the Moscow conservatory, to further explore and expand his musical talents. He lived and studied with Nikolai Zveref, one of the leading musical instructors in Russia. Sergey became more disciplined, and developed a more optimistic outlook on life. Sergey moved out and began studies with his cousin, after a dispute with Zveref. He studied in earnest, and in 1892, he graduated from the conservatory with high honors.
